Before deployment, decide whether the UI will manage its bundled Nginx, a separate Nginx container, or host-installed Nginx: each option needs different mounts and permissions.
Choose what Nginx UI will manage
The standard Docker image includes Nginx. The official Getting Started guide describes using it as a replacement for host-facing Nginx by publishing ports 80 and 443. If you want to retain another Nginx instance, choose the matching control mode before you configure containers.
| Control mode | Docker socket | Configuration and logs | Host access and operational notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bundled Nginx | Not identified as a requirement by the Getting Started guide for this mode. | The image includes Nginx; persist Nginx UI data at /etc/nginx-ui. Ensure the /etc/nginx volume is empty on first run. |
Publish the needed ports from the UI container. The guide presents this as an option to replace host-facing Nginx. |
| Nginx in another container | Required by the Nginx-container configuration guide. | Mount the same Nginx configuration and log paths into both containers. The UI-side config mount must be writable; the Nginx container’s mount may be read-only. | Set the target container name. The socket and name route status and control commands; the UI reads and writes files through its own mounts. |
| Nginx installed on the host | The documented Docker-based host-control path uses SSH, not the other-container socket workflow. | Use SFTP or host-directory bind mounts. SFTP rescans changes every 30 seconds and has a documented limitation discovering certificates that exist only on the host; mounted access requires bind mounts and container recreation. | Same-host only. Linux requires systemd and narrowly scoped passwordless sudo -n commands. macOS requires a Homebrew user service and its owning login user. |
For managing Nginx installed directly on the host, the project recommends another installation method rather than the standard image’s bundled-Nginx setup. The Docker-based SSH option is documented for the same host only; see the official host SSH guide.
Install the Docker image and open the setup page
The official image listens on container ports 80 and 443. Port 80 is internally reverse-proxied to the UI backend at 127.0.0.1:9000, so access the setup page through the host port mapped to container port 80, not by publishing backend port 9000. The guide’s example maps host 8080 to container 80, and host 8443 to container 443; with that example, browse to http://<server-address>:8080. Use the official guide for the current run or Compose configuration.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Prepare persistent application storage. Mount a Docker volume or host directory at
/etc/nginx-ui. The guide also illustrates an optional/var/wwwmount and a Docker socket mount; they are examples, not universal requirements. Include the socket only when the chosen control mode requires it. - Check the first-run Nginx directory. For the bundled-Nginx image’s first run, ensure the
/etc/nginxvolume is empty, as the guide directs. Do not treat this as permission to overwrite configuration you need to keep. - Start the container. Use
uozi/nginx-ui:latestand map a host port to container port80. Map container port443as well if your deployment needs its HTTPS listener. Verify the image tag and instructions against the release you deploy because tags and workflows can change. - Retrieve the one-time setup secret. On first startup, Nginx UI creates
.install_secretalongsideapp.iniin/etc/nginx-ui. Read it from the host directory or volume mounted there. If you did not mount that directory, usedocker exec <container_name> cat /etc/nginx-ui/.install_secret. - Complete browser setup promptly. Open the host address and mapped port, then enter the secret. It is valid only during the first-run setup window and is removed after setup completes or expires; it is not a reusable login credential.
Secure host-installed Nginx management over SSH
Use the SSH workflow only when the UI container and host Nginx are on the same machine. Complete these controls before relying on it to administer the host.
- Protect the UI administrator account. Enable two-factor authentication before opening the host SSH setup wizard.
- Use a dedicated, unprivileged Linux account. The guide’s example uses
nginxuiand adds it toadmfor log access. Grant only the group and file access this deployment needs. - Set up the SSH key carefully. The wizard can generate an Ed25519 key at
/etc/nginx-ui/host_keyor accept a pasted/uploaded key, which is stored with mode0600. This setup does not support encrypted private keys. - Verify the host fingerprint independently. Confirm it through a trusted channel before accepting it. Host SSH mode requires a
known_hostsallow-list. Treat a changed host key for the same algorithm as security-sensitive rather than automatically trusting it. - Choose SFTP or mounted file access. SFTP avoids host directory mounts, but checks for changes on a 30-second interval and may not discover certificates that exist only on the host. Mounted access requires bind mounts and recreating the container when mount configuration changes.
- Constrain Linux privilege escalation. Install the generated sudoers entry with
visudo. Keep customTestConfigCmd,ReloadCmd, andRestartCmdvalues empty unless the sudoers rules explicitly cover the commands they invoke. - Persist UI state. Keep
/etc/nginx-uion a persistent volume or bind mount so the SSH host-key allow-list at/etc/nginx-ui/known_hostssurvives upgrades and container rebuilds. - Run the wizard’s checks before saving. Review SSH connectivity, Nginx configuration testing, platform and service checks, file permissions, and sudo coverage where applicable.
On macOS, the documented SSH setup instead requires a Homebrew user service running as its owning login user. Consult the host SSH guide for platform-specific configuration.

Limit Docker-socket access for another Nginx container
The documented workflow for controlling Nginx in a separate container requires the Docker socket and the target container name. It also requires the UI container to see the same configuration and log paths as the Nginx container, with write access to configuration from the UI side. Docker-socket access is a powerful host-control interface; mount it only when this control mode needs it, and protect the management interface and host accordingly. These socket and path requirements are described in the container configuration guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Configure WebSocket origins only when needed
Nginx UI documents ticket-based WebSocket authentication: a short-lived explicit token is obtained through a CSRF-protected API endpoint. WebSocketTrustedOrigins is optional defense in depth for reverse proxies using a different public origin, multiple management domains, or local development. Same-origin connections do not need to be added; keep the allowed-origin list as small as possible. See the official HTTP configuration guide.
