This is a comparison of documented features, not a rendering-quality or speed test. The CLI is the clearest documented choice when both formats must be generated reliably from source. Browser tools are convenient for manual work, but check account access, privacy requirements and service availability for your situation.
Use Mermaid CLI for repeatable PNG and PDF exports
The official Mermaid CLI project accepts Mermaid definition files and generates SVG, PNG or PDF. It can also process Mermaid code blocks embedded in Markdown. Its documented installation routes include npm, local use, npx, Docker and Podman.
Install and render a diagram
- Install the CLI with
npm install -g @mermaid-js/mermaid-cli. - Save a diagram as
input.mmd, then runmmdc -i input.mmd -o output.pngfor PNG ormmdc -i input.mmd -o output.pdffor PDF. The output extension selects the format. - For a pipeline, the CLI also documents stdin input. For supported options such as theme or transparent background, consult the project README before adding flags to your command.
Local or container-based execution makes the CLI suited to rendering diagrams in scripts and repositories. Docker and Podman are available routes, but the project lists Linux sandboxing and container-permission issues among known problems. The README marks Homebrew as unsupported, so use a documented installation route instead. The project’s Node.js API is not covered by semver; integrations using that API should account for possible version changes.

Choose a browser editor for manual exports
Mermaid Live Editor: straightforward PNG export
The official Live Editor guide lists PNG, SVG and Markdown export, but not PDF. Use it for a quick browser-based PNG or SVG; do not assume it can produce PDF based on the consulted guide. The guide says edit history is stored in browser storage, autosaved every minute, and limited to the last 30 viewable edits. It also describes loading diagrams from a GitHub Gist.
Mermaid Chart: verify PDF in the editor
Mermaid Chart’s export guide lists PNG, SVG, PDF and MMD (Mermaid source) export. A separate official feature page lists PNG, SVG and MMD, but not PDF. Because the format lists differ, check the export menu in the account you intend to use before relying on PDF for a deliverable.

The export guide says PNG backgrounds can be default, transparent or custom, and describes SVG as vector-based. It recommends SVG or an increased PNG scale if an image looks pixelated. If a theme does not carry through to an export, the guide advises putting the theme in the diagram’s front matter rather than relying on editor-level preferences. For excess whitespace in a PDF, it suggests changing the diagram direction or splitting the diagram.
mermaid.tools: independent browser option with PDF controls
The mermaid.tools export guide documents SVG, PNG, JPEG and PDF. It offers PNG scale, background and padding controls, plus PDF paper-size and orientation settings. The site describes itself as independent of Mermaid.js and Mermaid Chart; it uses the Mermaid library served by the site to render diagrams in the browser.

Check that the preview finishes rendering without a parse error before exporting. The guide says scale multiplies both image dimensions: a 4× export contains sixteen times as many pixels as a 1× export. If an output becomes oversized, reduce scale or padding; for very large diagrams, use SVG if the destination accepts it. The guide, updated 11 September 2026, states that this editor rejects canvases above 16,384 pixels on either side or 16 megapixels total. Those are mermaid.tools limits, not universal Mermaid limits.
Pick an export format that suits the destination
- Use PNG when the destination needs a raster image, such as a document or page that does not accept vector graphics. Increase scale if more pixels are needed, while watching for oversized output.
- Use SVG when the destination accepts vector graphics and you want an image that can scale without quality loss. Mermaid Chart’s export guide describes SVG as vector-based; mermaid.tools recommends it for very large diagrams when supported by the destination.
- Use PDF when the recipient or workflow requires a PDF document. Check the page fit and whitespace after export; for Mermaid Chart, verify PDF is actually available in your account.
Recommendation
Choose Mermaid CLI when PNG and PDF need to be generated directly from Mermaid files in a repeatable workflow. Choose the Live Editor for a quick browser-based PNG. For browser-based PDF, mermaid.tools documents the format and its page controls; Mermaid Chart is a possible alternative only after confirming PDF export in the editor you plan to use.
