The import import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver; is correct. If Java or your IDE cannot resolve it, first make sure the affected module has Selenium’s Java library on its compile classpath, then refresh the Maven or Gradle project and run a clean build. Java 11 is not too old for Selenium 4: Selenium documents Java 8 as its minimum.
1. Verify the import and add Selenium to the affected module
Use this exact import in the Java file:
import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver;If the import is still unresolved, declare Selenium’s Java binding in the build file for the module that contains the file. Selenium’s Java setup uses the org.seleniumhq.selenium:selenium-java artifact. Choose a current stable version from Selenium’s Downloads page; versions change, so avoid copying an old version number from an unrelated example.
Maven
Add the dependency inside the relevant module’s pom.xml. Replace the version placeholder with a current stable Selenium version:

</dependency>If this is a multi-module project, the dependency must be declared in the module that compiles the source containing the import, or be made available to it through the project’s dependency structure.

For a class used only in test sources, add the dependency to the relevant project’s build.gradle:

}2. Refresh the build-tool project and compile
- Save the Maven or Gradle build file.
- In your IDE, reload or sync the Maven or Gradle project so it resolves the new dependency. Check that the dependency belongs to the same module and source set as the affected Java file.
- Run a clean build from a terminal at the project root. For Maven, run
mvn clean compile. For Gradle, run./gradlew clean build. - Read the build output. If the command-line build succeeds but the editor still marks the import, focus on IDE synchronization or project configuration. If it fails too, use the dependency-resolution or compiler error in the output to identify the failure.
3. Check Java compatibility only after dependency resolution
Java 11 satisfies Selenium 4’s documented minimum Java version of 8. Changing the JDK is not the first fix for an unresolved import: verify that Selenium resolved and is on the failing source file’s compile classpath. This minimum does not establish compatibility for every older Selenium release or every unrelated build plugin; use the actual build output to diagnose those cases.
4. Troubleshoot the remaining import errors
The package or type cannot be resolved in the IDE, but the terminal build succeeds
- Reload or sync the Maven or Gradle project.
- Confirm the IDE opened the project as a build-tool project rather than relying on a separately configured classpath.
- Check that the editor is showing the module and source set that the successful build compiled.
The terminal says the package does not exist
- Confirm the dependency is in the module containing the file, not just in another module.
- For Gradle, check that test code uses
testImplementationand production code usesimplementation. - Check the dependency-resolution output for download failures, an invalid version, or other build errors; the import cannot compile until the artifact is resolved.
The dependency is declared but the error remains
- Check for a different Maven or Gradle project being built than the one open in the IDE.
- Inspect the complete build output rather than treating the highlighted import as proof that the import spelling is wrong.
- Run the clean compile or build again after correcting the project configuration. Selenium’s upgrade guidance recommends compiling or building after dependency changes.
