Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor most newcomers who want to focus on shooting and movement, Zero Build is the more approachable place to start. It keeps Fortnite’s Battle Royale action and objective but removes building and adds a recharging Overshield. Choose standard Battle Royale if learning to build is part of what you want from the game. That recommendation follows from the modes’ documented mechanics; Epic’s descriptions do not establish that one mode is objectively easier or produces better results for beginners.
What is the difference between Zero Build and Battle Royale?
The defining difference is building. Epic describes Zero Build as Battle Royale action, loot, and progression without building. Standard Battle Royale includes building. In Zero Build, players instead rely on weapons, items, and traversal, with a recharging Overshield as an added first line of defense.

The broad objective remains familiar: survive the Storm and try to be the last player standing. Epic says Zero Build retains Battle Royale’s action and progression, while its Battle Royale description explains the survival objective. See Epic’s Zero Build mode page and Epic’s Battle Royale page.
Which mode should a new player try first?
| Your priority | Good first experiment | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fight and move without learning building first | Zero Build | Building is removed, and the mode emphasizes weapons, items, and traversal; it also has a recharging Overshield. |
| Learn how building fits into combat | Battle Royale | Building is available in the standard mode, so you can practice it as part of the Battle Royale experience. |
| Play toward the Battle Royale survival objective | Either | Both modes share the core goal of surviving and outlasting opponents. |
Think of the choice as deciding which skill set you want to practice, not as choosing between a “real” mode and a simplified one. Starting in Zero Build can let you concentrate on fights and movement without building; starting in standard Battle Royale makes sense if building itself is one of your goals.

Is Zero Build easier for beginners?
It removes one mechanic a newcomer might otherwise need to learn, which can make it a sensible starting point for someone who wants to focus on weapons, items, and movement. But “easier” depends on what you find challenging and what you want to learn. Epic’s mode descriptions do not provide comparative beginner win rates, learning-time data, or evidence that one mode is more enjoyable or successful for new players.
What does Zero Build change in a match?
Without building, the mode shifts how players approach defense and movement. Epic’s March 29, 2022 launch announcement described Zero Build as a test of weapon, item, and traversal ability, and mentioned sprinting between cover, mantling, and ascenders alongside the recharging Overshield. Those are examples from the launch announcement, not a guarantee that every detail is unchanged in every current playlist. Read Epic’s Zero Build launch announcement for that dated description.
