Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Open-source software gives users defined rights to use, modify, and redistribute code under a license that meets the Open Source Definition. “Source-available” generally means the code can be inspected or obtained; the label alone does not tell you what you are allowed to do with it. To determine whether a particular project is open source—or whether you can use it for a particular purpose—check the exact license, version, and covered components.
What is the difference?
| Question | Open-source software | Source-available software |
|---|---|---|
| What does the label establish? | Under OSI usage, the software is distributed under a license that meets the Open Source Definition (OSD). | Generally, source code can be inspected or obtained. The label itself does not establish specific permissions. |
| Can you modify or redistribute it? | The license must grant rights consistent with the OSD, including making and distributing modified versions, subject to its conditions. | It depends on the actual license. Source visibility alone does not grant modification or redistribution rights. |
| Can you use it commercially? | Yes. OSI says open-source software can be used commercially and sold. | It depends on the actual license, which may allow commercial use broadly, limit it, or impose conditions. |
| Does the label mean OSI approved the license? | Not automatically. Check the license against the OSD and confirm whether OSI lists it as approved. | No. “Source-available” is not itself an OSI approval designation. |
OSI explains that “open source” is more than access to code: its definition sets out ten criteria, including free redistribution, source-code access, permission to make and distribute modified versions, and nondiscrimination against persons, groups, and fields of endeavor. The Open Source Definition is the standard OSI uses; its annotated version explains the criteria.
Does source available mean open source?
No. A public code repository or downloadable source archive does not, by itself, establish permission to use, modify, or share that code. “Source-available” is a broad descriptive label rather than a single license category defined by the cited OSI sources. Projects use it for different terms, so the license—not the label—determines the rights and restrictions.
For example, a license might let you inspect code but restrict certain commercial deployments or redistribution. Another might allow broad use while attaching specific conditions. Do not assume every source-available license is restrictive, or that visibility alone makes a project open source.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Can open-source software be used commercially?
Yes. The Open Source Initiative says, “Absolutely. All Open Source software can be used for commercial purpose; the Open Source Definition guarantees this.” That statement concerns open-source status; it does not mean every activity is free of conditions. The license may set requirements that apply when you distribute copies or derivatives.
Commercial use and downstream obligations are separate questions. For instance, a copyleft license can require recipients of covered redistributed software to receive specified freedoms. The exact obligations depend on the license and how the software is used or distributed. OSI’s FAQ discusses commercial use and restrictions.

What should you check before using a project?
- Find the license for the version you intend to use. Check the repository’s license file and notices, and confirm they apply to the code and components you need. Project terms can vary between versions, and a project can include components under different licenses.
- Read the permissions and conditions. Look specifically for terms on commercial use, modification, redistribution of original or modified copies, and any field-of-use or user restrictions.
- Check what happens when you distribute. Determine whether the license requires conditions for copies or derivatives you share, including any copyleft obligations.
- Verify OSI approval if that matters to your decision. Search the OSI license directory. It records licenses reviewed and approved by OSI, but does not tell you which license a particular project version uses; verify that in the project’s own files and notices.
- Get qualified advice for consequential decisions. Applying license terms can depend on the license text, version, deployment, and jurisdiction. For a significant product or compliance decision, consult qualified counsel.
Is “free software” the same as open source?
OSI describes “free software” and “open source software” as software released under licenses that guarantee a specified set of freedoms. The Free Software Foundation and OSI express their definitions differently, so the terms are related but not identical in framing. “Free” here does not mean that the software must have no price. OSI’s FAQ addresses the relationship between the terms.
