USB debugging connects Android Debug Bridge (ADB) to your device through a physical USB cable. Modern Wireless debugging connects ADB over Wi-Fi after you pair the device with your workstation. For phones, Android supports its modern wireless workflow on Android 11 (API level 30) and later; choose between the methods based on device support, network access and pairing, and whether you have a data-capable cable.

How USB and wireless debugging differ

Factor USB debugging Modern Wireless debugging
Connection Physical USB connection between device and workstation. Wi-Fi connection after pairing the device with the workstation.
Requirements USB debugging enabled and a data-capable cable that fits the device. Supported Android version, shared wireless network, Wireless debugging enabled, and a pairing step.
Useful when A direct cable connection is available, or wireless pairing or network discovery is not working. You want to avoid a physical connection and the device and network meet the requirements.

Both methods use ADB to let a development workstation communicate with a physical Android device. Android’s documentation does not provide a general speed or reliability comparison, so neither connection type can be described as universally faster or more stable.

Which Android versions support wireless debugging?

Android Developers says phones support deploying and debugging wirelessly from a workstation with ADB on Android 11 (API level 30) and later. For TV and Wear OS, the documented minimum is Android 13 (API level 33). See the Android Developers ADB documentation.

The older TCP/IP workflow is different: Android documents starting it with a USB connection for Android 10 (API level 29) and lower, and says it can also be used on Android 11 and later. For Android 11 and later, modern Wireless debugging is the documented cable-free workflow.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

How to enable modern Wireless debugging on Android

  1. Check your Android version. For a phone, confirm it is running Android 11 or later. Android’s documented threshold for TV and Wear OS is Android 13 or later.
  2. Update Android SDK Platform Tools. Android’s ADB guide lists the latest Platform Tools as a prerequisite.
  3. Put the device and workstation on the same wireless network. The documented workflow expects both to share a network.
  4. Enable Wireless debugging in Developer options. The exact settings path differs across Android versions, device makers, and device categories. Search in Developer options on your device rather than relying on one universal menu path.
  5. Pair the device with the workstation. Android Studio can pair with a QR code or pairing code. From a terminal, use the pairing address and port shown by the device:
    adb pair ipaddr:port
When prompted, enter the pairing code displayed on the device.

Android says a workstation generally needs to be paired only once. Pairing remains until you forget the workstation or revoke ADB debugging authorizations. To remove a workstation, use the forget option in the device’s Wireless debugging settings.

How to enable USB debugging

  1. Enable USB debugging in Developer options. Android’s settings documentation places USB debugging under Developer options for Android 9 and later, though menu paths vary. Your manufacturer may arrange settings differently.
  2. Connect the device to the workstation with a data-capable cable. Use a cable that both fits your device and carries data; not every cable supports data transfer.
  3. Use ADB or Android Studio with the connected device. Android Studio describes USB and Wi-Fi as connection options for a hardware device.

Android’s documentation does not specify one connector standard for all devices. Check the port on your device and choose a compatible data cable.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Can you use ADB over Wi-Fi with the older TCP/IP method?

Yes. Android documents a legacy workflow that begins with the device connected to the workstation by USB, switches ADB to TCP/IP mode (its example uses port 5555), and then connects over the shared network. This initial-USB route is documented for Android 10 and lower and can also be used on Android 11 and later. It is not the same as modern Wireless debugging, which pairs the device and workstation for a cable-free setup.

Why is Android Wireless debugging not connecting?

Check ADB’s mDNS discovery

ADB uses mDNS to discover and connect automatically to paired devices. Android’s troubleshooting guide suggests running:

adb mdns track-services --proto-text

Check whether the output includes a TLS service for the device. If the output is empty, the network does not support the mDNS discovery tested by this documented check.

Check the network and pairing

  • Confirm the workstation and device are on the same wireless network.
  • Confirm Wireless debugging is enabled and the workstation is paired.
  • Check whether network or firewall configuration is interfering with discovery.
  • Keep Platform Tools current. If discovery remains unavailable, troubleshoot the network or use USB where practical.

Which method should you choose?

  • Choose USB when a direct cable connection is available, wireless pairing or discovery is unavailable, or you need to start the legacy TCP/IP workflow over USB.
  • Choose modern Wireless debugging when avoiding a physical connection is useful, including when deploying to multiple remote devices, and your Android version and network meet the requirements.

Base the choice on four practical checks: whether the device supports the method, whether the workstation and device can share a network, whether pairing and discovery work, and whether a suitable data cable is available. Android’s documentation does not quantify comparative speed, stability, security, or battery life, so those outcomes should not be assumed for either method.
