Review your own diff before requesting review. There is no universal line-count limit; purpose, context, file spread, and reviewer needs matter more.
Start with one clear purpose
A reviewer should be able to explain what problem the PR solves and why its changes belong together. GitHub’s guidance on helping others review changes recommends focused PRs and context about the problem, approach, result, and areas needing attention. Google Engineering Practices similarly advises that a change be self-contained: reviewers should be able to understand it from the change and description, the existing codebase, or context they have already reviewed.
Keep unrelated goals out of the same PR. If a large piece of work can be divided into useful, understandable changes, split it so each part has a clear purpose. But do not make a change so small that reviewers cannot judge its implications. For example, a new API may need a usage example alongside it to show how it is intended to work.
Choose scope by understanding, not a line-count rule
Google’s guidance on small changes (which it calls CLs) offers rough examples: 100 lines is usually a reasonable size, while 1,000 lines is usually too large. Those are judgment aids, not universal thresholds or measured results. The number and spread of changed files, how coherent the work is, and what reviewers need to understand all affect whether a PR feels manageable. Google explicitly says there are no hard-and-fast rules for what is too large.

When deciding whether to keep work together or split it, ask:
- Does the change serve one clear purpose, or combine independent goals?
- Can a reviewer understand each proposed part with the description, codebase, and context already reviewed?
- Would each split-out part still be useful and understandable on its own?
- Do related tests or examples need to stay with the change to explain or validate it?
- How many files are touched, and can reviewers follow the sequence of changes?
- Does any part require particular attention because of the risk it introduces?
Split unrelated or independently useful work. Keep together the context needed to evaluate a feature or API. A small diff without enough context can be harder to review than a larger, coherent one.

Write a description that guides the review
Use a clear title and a description that answers why the change exists, what it changes, and where reviewers should focus. If a change is complex, point out important files or give reviewers a useful reading order. Link a related issue or project when it adds context. GitHub’s pull request template guidance describes how a repository template can prompt contributors for purpose, related issues, testing notes, and checklist items.

- Why: What problem or goal prompted the change?
- What changed: What is included, and what is deliberately out of scope?
- Review guide: Which files, sequence, or design choices deserve attention?
- Checks: Which relevant tests or builds ran, and what should reviewers know about the results?
- Risk notes: Does the change affect dependencies, authentication, permissions, workflows, or sensitive data?
- Related work: Which issue or project provides useful background?

Read the diff as a reviewer would. Look for accidental edits, unrelated changes, missing context, and places where the implementation may be difficult to follow. Run the relevant tests or builds and state what you ran in the description. Include related test code with the change where appropriate. Microsoft’s pull request guidance also supports keeping changes focused and including related tests.

Call out security-sensitive changes rather than expecting reviewers to spot them without context. Pay particular attention to changes involving dependencies, authentication, permissions, workflows, or sensitive data. The goal is not to replace review, but to help reviewers direct attention to consequential decisions.

A quick scope check before you open the PR
- State the change’s single purpose in one sentence. If that sentence hides multiple unrelated goals, separate them.
- Confirm that the change and its description provide enough context to understand its implications.
- Check whether each part of a proposed split would remain useful and understandable, and whether required tests or examples stay with the relevant change.
- Review the changed files and their spread; do not judge manageability by line count alone.
- Inspect the diff yourself, run relevant checks, and note the results and any security-sensitive areas.
- Complete the repository’s PR template and link related work when useful.
