When you extract it, an archive utility reads those entries and writes files to a destination folder. Compression may reduce size, but it cannot guarantee a particular saving—and neither a successful extraction, a CRC-32 check, nor a password proves that an archive is safe.
What a ZIP file contains
ZIP is an archive format, not a single compression algorithm. It can package multiple files and directories in one container. Each entry has a filename and associated metadata, along with file data that may be compressed or stored as-is.
The format includes a local file header and data for each entry, and typically a central directory containing an index of entries and their metadata. An end-of-central-directory record marks the archive’s directory information. The central directory is not the compressed payload: it helps extraction software find and interpret the entries. ZIP entries do not have to appear in a simple, fixed sequence, and the format also defines data descriptors that can support writing an archive when final size or checksum details are not yet known. PKWARE’s ZIP File Format Specification describes these records.
Why compression savings vary
Compression is recorded for each entry. ZIP supports methods such as Deflate, as well as other methods including Deflate64, BZIP2, and LZMA; an entry can also be stored without compression. Which methods an archive can use and an extractor can open depends on the software involved. The method identifiers and format details are in the ZIP specification.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
There is no universal percentage reduction for “zipping” a file. Savings depend on the source data, compression method, and tool settings. Text and repetitive data often have patterns a compressor can reduce. JPEG images, MP4 video, and other formats that are already compressed often have little room to shrink, so an archive may be only slightly smaller—or not meaningfully smaller—than its contents.
Compression is also distinct from archiving: a ZIP can bundle files for easier storage or transfer without reducing their size. If size matters, compare the archive’s size with the originals rather than assuming compression helped.

What happens when you extract a ZIP
An extractor reads the archive’s entry information, decompresses entries where needed, and writes the reconstructed files to the destination you select. The names and paths inside the archive influence where the software attempts to place each file. For a routine extraction, use the file manager or archive utility’s extract option and choose a destination folder; exact labels and menus vary by operating system and application.
ZIP’s specification says stored paths should use forward slashes and should not include a drive or device letter or begin with a slash. That rule does not eliminate risk: malformed or hostile archives and differences in extractor behavior can still matter. PKWARE’s IBM i user guide describes how absolute paths beginning with a slash can direct extraction toward the root structure and risk overwriting files; its examples are platform-specific, but the broader lesson is to treat paths in an archive as input that must be handled safely. PKWARE’s IBM i guide discusses this path hazard.

How to inspect an unfamiliar ZIP safely
- Check the sender and context. If you did not expect the archive, verify with the sender through a separate trusted channel before opening it. A familiar filename alone is not verification.
- Preview the file listing. Use maintained extraction software to inspect filenames and paths before extracting. Be cautious of unexpected executable or script files, files disguised with misleading names, or entries whose paths appear to lead outside the folder you chose.
- Extract to a new, dedicated folder. Avoid extracting an unfamiliar archive directly over an existing folder or into a sensitive system location. A secure extractor should normalize entry paths and ensure the final destination remains inside the selected folder.
- Do not launch unexpected files. Extraction writes files; it does not establish that they are trustworthy. Do not run an executable or script simply because it came inside a ZIP.
- Pay attention to errors. An extraction warning or failure can indicate corruption, unsupported features, or another problem. Do not bypass warnings for an archive you do not trust.
These steps reduce avoidable risk; they cannot certify that every extracted file is harmless. Keep your extraction utility maintained, and use another security check when the source or contents warrant it.
What CRC-32 can—and cannot—tell you
ZIP records can include CRC-32 values and compressed and uncompressed sizes. CRC-32 is useful for detecting accidental corruption: if data changes, a check may fail. It is not a cryptographic proof of who created or sent the archive, and a passing check does not show that the contents are safe or free of malware. The ZIP specification defines these fields; trust still depends on the source and the files themselves.

Are password-protected ZIP files safe?
Password protection can encrypt an archive’s contents, which is a confidentiality feature. PKWARE’s specification documents encryption options including AES-128, AES-192, and AES-256 identifiers, but support and compatibility vary with the archive configuration and the software used to create or open it. The specification documents the available format features.
Encryption does not authenticate the sender or make extracted files harmless. A password-protected archive from an unknown source should still be inspected and handled as untrusted. Use a compatible utility, and obtain the password through a trustworthy channel rather than treating the password itself as evidence of safety.

When ZIP64 matters
Classic ZIP fields have limits for values such as file sizes, entry counts, and offsets. ZIP64 adds wider fields when those classic fields cannot represent the required values. This matters with very large archives or archives containing many entries: the software creating and extracting the file must support ZIP64 to handle it correctly. PKWARE’s specification describes when corresponding ZIP64 records are used.
Choosing software to create or open ZIP files
ZIP features are not supported identically by every utility. When choosing an archiver or extractor, consider whether it supports the archive’s needed features and handles filenames and paths safely. Useful checks include:
- Compatibility with your operating system and the ZIP files you need to exchange.
- ZIP64 support if you work with very large archives or high entry counts.
- Support for the compression methods and encryption configuration used by the archive.
- Clear handling of filenames, paths, and extraction destinations.
- Useful error reporting when an archive is damaged or contains unsupported features.
If an archive will not open, a compatibility mismatch or corruption may be involved; repeated attempts with different tools do not make an untrusted archive safe. Prefer maintained software that clearly reports what it can and cannot extract.
