The gentlest way to track a store you control is to subscribe to product-change events instead of repeatedly checking for updates. For a third-party store, first look for an authorized feed, API, or alert; if page checks are appropriate, request only the pages you need, reuse HTTP cache validators, space checks out, and back off when the site signals a limit.
Choose the method based on who controls the store
Store owners and authorized app developers can receive change notifications directly. A third-party page monitor usually cannot subscribe to the merchant’s internal events, so it must rely on an authorized feed or carefully paced HTTP requests.

If you control the store, subscribe to relevant events
Shopify’s app guidance puts the principle plainly: “Instead of polling for changes, your app subscribes to them.” Webhooks let an app receive notifications for selected changes, avoiding routine catalog reads just to discover whether something changed. This describes Shopify’s platform; other commerce systems have their own event mechanisms and limits. See Shopify’s APIs for apps guidance.

For Shopify inventory monitoring, the documented variants/in_stock and variants/out_of_stock topics are variant-scoped. The out-of-stock trigger corresponds to inventory changing from at least one to zero or less. Availability in the relevant documentation is online-channel-specific, so do not treat a variant’s online availability as a universal statement about every sales channel. For a price alert, subscribe to the relevant product update notification rather than checking every product repeatedly. Shopify Help Center describes using webhooks for price-change notifications in its webhook setup guidance. Choose only topics needed for the fields being monitored; extra subscriptions create events your app does not need to process.
Make delivery handling reliable and idempotent
- Save the last observed values. Keep the price, inventory state, and event or product identifiers needed to compare the new notification with the previous state.
- Deduplicate deliveries. Event delivery can be repeated; process it so a duplicate does not send a second alert or trigger an unnecessary catalog read.
- Acknowledge promptly and reliably. Shopify Help Center notes that repeated non-200 responses from a webhook destination can cause the subscription to be removed automatically. Make the delivery endpoint dependable and monitor failures.
- Fetch narrowly when the event lacks detail. Retrieve only the affected product or variant rather than crawling the catalog. Shopify documents that certain product webhook payloads include full variant details for only the first 100 variants; larger variant sets use a
variant_gidslist and need a deliberate retrieval strategy. See Shopify’s webhook documentation.
Keep the distinction between a variant becoming unavailable and a whole product being removed. The inventory topics above describe a variant’s stock state, not necessarily the status of the entire product listing.

Do not treat Shopify Events as a production substitute yet
Shopify’s current app documentation says webhooks are its production mechanism. It describes Events as a successor in developer preview, available on the unstable API for a subset of topics. That status is not evidence that Events are generally production-ready. Check the current Shopify API guidance before choosing an integration.
If you monitor a third-party store, minimize and pace page requests
Start with permission and the narrowest data source
Prefer a merchant-provided feed, API, price alert, or other permissioned integration. If you are considering page monitoring, review the site’s terms and its crawler directions first. RFC 9309 states that robots rules “are not a form of access authorization”: robots.txt is neither permission to access a page nor an access-control mechanism. Do not bypass blocks or other site controls. Read the IETF Robots Exclusion Protocol (RFC 9309).

Monitor only the specific product URLs and fields you need. Avoid broad catalog enumeration and downloading page assets that are irrelevant to price or availability. Robots.txt can change; RFC 9309 says crawlers following the protocol generally should not use a cached robots.txt file for more than 24 hours unless the file is unreachable. The RFC’s requirement that parsers support a parsing limit of at least 500 KiB concerns parser capability, not a recommended page size, request interval, or monitoring allowance.
Use conditional requests when the server supplies validators
When a response includes an ETag, save it and send it in an If-None-Match request header on the next check. When it includes Last-Modified, save that value and send it as If-Modified-Since. These conditional request mechanisms are defined in IETF RFC 7232.

If the representation has not changed, the server can validate the stored copy without sending the same response body again. This can reduce transfer work, but it does not eliminate the HTTP request; the actual load effect depends on the server’s implementation and behavior. Validators help only when the origin provides and honors them.

Spread requests over time rather than sending synchronized bursts. There is no universal safe polling interval established by these standards: follow the site’s instructions, balance alert freshness against request frequency, and adjust to the responses you observe. If the site blocks automated access, stop or seek authorization rather than attempting to evade the block.

A 429 Too Many Requests response is a rate-limit signal. RFC 6585 defines it as indicating that the user sent too many requests in a given period. If the response includes Retry-After, wait until the stated HTTP date or for the stated number of seconds before sending another request. The syntax and meaning are specified in RFC 6585 and RFC 9110. For other transient errors, conservative backoff is a sensible implementation practice; it is not a quoted requirement of those RFCs.

What to verify before relying on alerts
- Coverage: Confirm that the event or page data includes the exact variant, price, and availability fields you need.
- Delivery or extraction: For webhooks, verify delivery acknowledgements and deduplication. For a hosted monitor, verify it extracts price and stock accurately on the pages you care about.
- Freshness: Set a page-check schedule based on the site’s directions and your alert needs; a page monitor cannot detect a change between checks.
- Limits: Confirm your integration handles failed deliveries, incomplete product payloads, HTTP validators, and rate-limit responses without escalating request volume.
