Start by checking whether Linux sees the tablet on USB, then identify which driver path you are using. A tablet may be visible to USB but blocked from OpenTabletDriver, missing a virtual input device, or ignored by libinput. Each failure points to a different fix, so check the layer where detection stops before changing drivers or kernel modules.
1. Check whether Linux detects the tablet over USB
Connect the tablet and check whether it appears in the USB device list. OpenTabletDriver recommends checking lsusb and watching kernel or device events with dmesg or udevadm monitor. See its connection guidance.
- Open a terminal and run
lsusb. - In another terminal, watch for connection events with
sudo dmesg -worudevadm monitor. - Disconnect and reconnect the tablet. Look for a new USB device or event.
If there is no new device or event, try another USB port. If the tablet has a removable cable, check that it is seated properly and try a known data-capable replacement cable. A charging-only cable will not provide the USB data connection needed for detection. Bluetooth tablets are not currently supported by OpenTabletDriver, and its wireless-dongle support is partial; use USB when troubleshooting that driver.
2. Confirm the model and driver route
USB enumeration only shows that the computer can see a USB device; it does not prove that a particular tablet driver supports it. Check the exact model against the selected driver’s support information before changing system settings. OpenTabletDriver directs users to its supported-tablet list and notes connection-dependent limitations in its general FAQ.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose the route that matches your goal: OpenTabletDriver, or the native Linux input stack—for example, the kernel Wacom driver and libinput for a Wacom tablet. These routes have different support and module requirements. Do not remove or disable a kernel module just because OpenTabletDriver reports a conflict if you intend to use the native driver.
3. If USB sees the tablet but OpenTabletDriver does not
OpenTabletDriver’s Linux troubleshooting guidance recommends checking its logs for warnings and errors. Two common causes are another tablet driver claiming the device and insufficient access to a /dev/hidrawX device. Its Linux FAQ covers these detection errors.

Check for a competing driver
OpenTabletDriver identifies the wacom and hid_uclogic kernel modules as potential conflicts. Its permissions and troubleshooting page explains the project-specific steps. Follow the instructions for your distribution and chosen driver route; these modules may be required when using a native Linux driver instead.
Check device permissions
OpenTabletDriver needs access to the tablet’s raw HID device, as well as /dev/uinput and other system paths. If its logs report access denied or insufficient permissions, use the project’s Linux permission instructions rather than changing permissions broadly or running the program with elevated privileges as a workaround.

4. Diagnose OpenTabletDriver virtual-device errors
OpenTabletDriver can see the physical tablet yet fail to create the virtual input device that applications use. The error code helps distinguish this from a USB problem. The project’s Linux troubleshooting guide maps these errors to the following checks:
| Error | What it indicates | Next check |
|---|---|---|
ENODEV |
The virtual device is missing. | Reboot, as advised by OpenTabletDriver. |
ENOENT |
uinput support is missing. | Check whether the kernel provides uinput support. If you use a custom kernel, verify that CONFIG_INPUT_UINPUT is enabled. |
EACCES |
Access to uinput is denied. | Follow OpenTabletDriver’s uinput permission guidance. |
These errors concern virtual input setup or access; they do not necessarily mean the tablet is absent from USB.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
5. Find out why libinput ignores the tablet
If the USB device and driver are present but your desktop or applications receive no tablet input, check libinput’s diagnostic output. Its tablet debugging documentation explains that libinput ignores devices that lack required tablet capabilities.
- Missing X/Y axes: The device may have been given an incorrect tablet udev tag.
- Missing pen or stylus-button capability: The kernel driver or device’s HID descriptor may not expose the required information.
- Missing axis resolution: A hardware database (hwdb) entry may be needed.
Use libinput record to inspect the device and verify which information it reports. Match the diagnostic to the specific missing capability rather than assuming that every libinput rejection has the same fix. The libinput documentation notes: “When these capabilities are missing, libinput ignores the device and prints an error to the log.”

6. For Wacom tablets, check the native Linux input stack
If you are using the native Wacom route, the Linux Wacom Project says that Wayland tablet input is processed by libinput. If applications do not recognize tablet events, follow its advice to install or update libinput; consult the project’s Wayland guidance.
If a connected Wacom tablet does not work at all, Wacom’s developer documentation says the input-wacom driver may be needed. If you use a custom kernel, check that current Wacom HID support is enabled. See the Wacom developer documentation for the applicable guidance.
Quick Recap
Which fix should you try first?
| What you observe | Likely layer to investigate | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| No new USB device or connection event | Port, cable, or physical connection | Try another USB port; check or replace a removable cable with a data-capable one. |
| USB device appears, but OpenTabletDriver cannot detect it | Model support, hidraw access, or competing driver | Verify model support, read OpenTabletDriver logs, and follow its permission or module instructions. |
| OpenTabletDriver reports a virtual-device error | uinput support or permissions | Use the error-code checks above. |
| Desktop or application receives no tablet events | libinput classification or native driver | Inspect libinput diagnostics; for Wacom, follow the native-stack guidance. |
