Evaluate a brain-computer interface (BCI) cursor with a repeatable, task-specific protocol. Report speed, accuracy, and reliability as separate outcomes first; add a composite score only as a supplement. A system’s result is meaningful only when readers can tell what task it performed, how difficult that task was, and how failures and repeated sessions were counted.
Define the task before choosing a score
First state whether users steer a continuously moving cursor, select discrete targets, or complete a higher-level task such as typing. These tasks are not interchangeable: a target-selection rate does not describe continuous steering, and a continuous-control score does not by itself show how often discrete selections succeed.
The intended use matters too. A communication task may place a different value on accuracy and speed than rapid target acquisition. Thompson et al. note in their 2014 performance-measurement tutorial that “Depending on the application, aspects of BCI performance (e.g. accuracy and speed) may differ in their relative importance.”

The last row is a protocol choice, not a universal BCI metric. Whatever the task, identify the intended application and state what constitutes completion.

Specify a repeatable protocol
Describe the conditions that determine task difficulty and the opportunity to succeed. For a cursor task, document at least:
- Target size, target distance, layout, and cursor boundaries.
- Feedback provided to the participant and any dwell, click, or confirmation behavior.
- Trial order and duration, plus the rule for a completed trial.
- What counts as an error, timeout, failed trial, restart, or correction.
- Which conditions were held constant and which varied between systems, participants, or sessions.
Use the same conditions when comparing systems, or clearly report the differences. The available sources do not establish one mandatory cursor geometry or trial schedule, so describe the protocol you used rather than calling it standardized.
Measure speed without hiding task difficulty
For discrete selections
Report both time per selection and selections completed per unit time, and explain how errors, timeouts, and incomplete trials affect the calculation. A rate without a stated trial duration or failure rule can make unlike tests look comparable.

For continuous movement
Report movement time or task-completion time alongside the target difficulty. When the task design supports it, a properly specified Fitts-law measure can help characterize continuous cursor control. State the task parameters and calculation rather than giving a throughput figure without context. Thompson et al.’s tutorial discusses Fitts-law approaches for continuous BCI tasks and notes that information-transfer-rate estimates derived from them have been inconsistent across studies.

Measure accuracy with an explicit rule
For target selection, report the hit rate or selection accuracy and define a hit, error, timeout, and any correction. For continuous control, report endpoint error or another task-relevant trajectory measure, and state the tolerance that makes an endpoint acceptable. Accuracy is not a single operational definition that applies to every BCI task; the measurement rule belongs in the protocol.
Test reliability across trials and sessions
Reliability is about whether useful performance persists, not just whether a participant succeeds in one favorable run. Repeat the task across trials and sessions, and report participant-level results and variability alongside any group aggregate. Make losses of control, timeouts, restarts, recalibrations, and changes over time visible in the results.

State how many sessions and trials were included and what happened when control was lost. For example, explain whether a restart counts as a failed trial, whether recalibration time is included in completion time, and whether results after recalibration are reported separately. These choices affect interpretation and should not be left implicit.
The FDA identifies long-term device performance and the development of more reliable neural interfaces as regulatory-science concerns. That does not establish a cursor-specific reliability score or mandate the checklist above. FDA also reports issuing final guidance on implanted BCI devices for patients with paralysis or amputation on May 20, 2021; device-specific regulatory questions require consulting the full current guidance and applicable jurisdiction.
Use composite measures as supplements
Information-transfer rate (ITR) combines accuracy and protocol speed for some BCI tasks. If reporting it, include the equation, assumptions, task structure, averaging method, and treatment of errors or incomplete trials. Keep the speed and accuracy components beside it: a combined value can conceal a faster but less accurate system, or an accuracy gain that came with slower performance.

A 2026 arXiv preprint, “A Methodological Framework for Explicit Control of the Speed-Accuracy Trade-off in Brain-Computer Interfaces,” argues that conventional ITR may obscure the relationship between speed and accuracy and proposes explicit control of that trade-off. Treat this as an emerging methodological proposal, not an established standard.

When comparing systems, match the task and conditions as closely as possible, then show the outcomes on distinct axes:
- Speed: time to target, time per selection, or selections per unit time, as appropriate to the task.
- Accuracy: hits and errors, plus task-specific endpoint or trajectory error where relevant.
- Reliability: consistency across trials and sessions, with failures and recalibration accounted for.
- Protocol: target difficulty, feedback, trial duration, and completion rules.
- Evidence scope: BCI modality and system context, participant and session coverage, and whether results came from online testing or retrospective simulation.
These axes prevent a single score from standing in for unlike evidence. A retrospective simulation and an online test, for instance, should not be treated as equivalent without explaining the distinction.

Record the interface modality, relevant system and data characteristics, participant cohort at an appropriate level, task protocol, feedback, session structure, and exact metric definitions. ISO/IEC TS 27571:2026 (edition 1, published April 2026) describes data elements and metadata for non-invasive BCI recordings, including EEG, MEG, fNIRS, and fMRI. ISO/IEC 27572:2026 (edition 1, published September 2, 2026, per IEC) specifies a BCI reference architecture and common language. These standards can inform data and system documentation; their descriptions do not establish a cursor-performance benchmark. IEEE Brain also describes ongoing standards efforts concerning BCI terminology and reporting of in-vivo neural-interface research, not a cursor-control performance protocol.
The 2014 tutorial, FDA materials, and standards descriptions support task-dependent measurement and careful documentation, but do not establish one universal cursor score or a single cross-system ranking. A useful comparison therefore gives readers the protocol and component results needed to judge the systems on their own terms.
