DeepAgents does not automatically give every agent component internet access. Its scoped JavaScript interpreter has no network access; internet access comes from the tools or execution backend you provide. For the safest design, expose a narrowly scoped search or API tool when that is enough. If the agent must run arbitrary code, use an isolated sandbox and enforce outbound-network and permission boundaries there—not by relying on the model to refuse unsafe actions.

First, identify which part of the system needs internet access

“Dockerized DeepAgents” can refer to an application running in Docker, the DeepAgents interpreter, or a separate backend that executes shell commands. Those are distinct layers. A Dockerized application having network access does not, by itself, give network access to DeepAgents’ scoped interpreter. Likewise, a sandbox backend may have its own network policy that is separate from the application container’s.

DeepAgents describes tools, filesystem backends, sandbox execution, and its interpreter as separate parts of the agent environment. Its QuickJS-based interpreter does not provide shell access, package installation, filesystem access, or network access. To let the agent reach the internet, you must expose a tool that can make the required requests or choose an execution environment that permits them.

Choose the narrowest execution option that meets the task

Approach Internet and execution capability When it fits Main security consideration
Purpose-built search or API tool The tool can make the specific requests it was designed to make. Its exact reach depends on how you implement and configure it. The agent needs search results or a defined service, not arbitrary browsing or code execution. Limit the tool’s destinations, operations, and returned data to what the workflow needs.
DeepAgents interpreter The scoped QuickJS interpreter has no network access. Small computations that do not need external services, shell commands, or files. Do not assume that giving the Docker application internet access changes the interpreter’s capabilities.
LocalShellBackend Shell commands run with the user’s permissions and may make network connections, access files, execute programs, change system configuration, spawn processes, or install packages. Only workflows where you deliberately accept the permissions of the local execution environment. LangChain warns that virtual filesystem or path restrictions do not secure shell access. Its guidance points production code execution toward an isolated backend.
Sandbox backend Provides an isolated environment for shell commands and code; actual outbound access depends on the sandbox’s configuration and provider. Workflows that genuinely require arbitrary code or shell execution. Isolation does not establish that internet egress is restricted, that credentials are absent, or that every threat is contained. Verify those properties for the deployment.

This distinction follows the DeepAgents execution-environment and deployment documentation and the LangChain LocalShellBackend reference. The DeepAgents security guidance captures the operating principle: “Enforce boundaries at the tool/sandbox level, not by expecting the model to self-police.”

Set up the access boundary before enabling a workflow

  1. Specify the needed destinations and actions. Decide whether the task requires a particular API, search, or broader outbound access. Write down which hosts, protocols, and operations are necessary. Avoid granting general shell networking when a purpose-built tool can do the job.
  2. Select the execution path. For a narrow lookup, provide a purpose-built tool. For arbitrary code, use an isolated sandbox backend rather than the local shell backend for production execution.
  3. Apply egress controls at the layer that actually makes the request. Identify whether requests originate in the Dockerized application, a local shell process, or a managed sandbox. Configure outbound restrictions at the corresponding container, host, network, or provider layer, and verify that denied destinations really fail. Do not assume a restriction on one layer governs another.
  4. Keep secrets out of untrusted execution. Do not forward application credentials into agent code unless the workflow requires them. If a credential is necessary, scope it to the required service and operations, and check exactly how the selected backend exposes environment variables, files, or other secrets to executed code.
  5. Constrain consequential actions. Treat web pages and API responses as untrusted data, not instructions to the agent. Keep tools narrowly permissioned and require human approval for actions with meaningful external effects where your application supports it.
  6. Test both allowed and denied cases. Confirm that the required request succeeds from the actual execution environment and that an unapproved destination, an unavailable credential, and an attempted action outside the tool’s scope are blocked. Repeat these checks after changing the container network, backend, or provider configuration.

What to check when Docker is involved

Do not treat “the container can reach the internet” as proof that the agent’s execution path is safe—or even that the component performing the agent’s work can reach the internet. Trace a request from the tool or code that makes it to its network boundary. If execution is delegated to a sandbox service, the relevant egress policy may belong to that service rather than to the Docker host.

  • Identify which process or service sends outbound requests: the agent application, a tool implementation, a local shell, or a sandbox.
  • Check which filesystem and host resources that process can access. A local shell inherits the user’s permissions; the LocalShellBackend reference specifically cautions that filesystem path restrictions do not make shell execution secure.
  • Verify egress policy in the environment that executes the request. Confirm both permitted destinations and the behavior when a destination is not permitted.
  • Inspect which credentials, environment variables, mounted files, and service identities are available to that environment.
  • Recheck the boundary after moving between local Docker execution and a managed sandbox. A setting on the Docker application container should not be assumed to control a separate backend.

The DeepAgents deployment guide describes sandbox configuration as optional and names none, Daytona, Modal, Runloop, and LangSmith Sandbox as options. That list does not establish the current egress rules, credential handling, or isolation guarantees of any particular provider. Check the chosen provider’s current documentation and configuration for those properties before relying on it.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Expecting the interpreter to inherit network access: the documented interpreter has no network access; provide a tool or use an appropriate execution backend instead.
  • Enabling a local shell just to solve a web lookup: shell access is a broad permission decision, not merely a convenient way to make HTTP requests.
  • Assuming “sandbox” means unrestricted or restricted egress: the term describes an execution boundary, not a universal outbound-network policy. Confirm the actual configuration.
  • Trusting the agent to reject malicious instructions in web content: enforce access limits in tools and the execution environment, and add approval for consequential actions where appropriate.
  • Copying network configuration without matching it to the deployment: the correct control depends on where the request originates and how the application and execution backend are connected. Verify the relevant Docker and provider settings for your topology.
