Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A remote Model Context Protocol (MCP) server is an MCP server a client accesses over a network instead of launching as a local process. In common HTTP deployments, a server may require OAuth authorization: the client discovers the authorization server, obtains an access token, and sends it to the MCP server in an HTTP Authorization header. Authentication is optional across MCP; the individual endpoint determines whether it is required.
What makes an MCP server remote?
The distinction is where the server runs and how the client connects. A local MCP server commonly runs as a process on the same machine and communicates over standard input and output (stdio). A remote server is reached over a network, often using HTTP. Remote does not automatically mean OAuth: transport and endpoint configuration determine how credentials are handled.
| Aspect | Local stdio | Remote HTTP |
|---|---|---|
| Where the server runs | As a local process accessible to the client. | On a network endpoint accessible to the client. |
| How the client connects | Through standard input and output. | Through HTTP; the 2025-11-25 transport specification describes Streamable HTTP as one endpoint supporting POST and GET, with optional Server-Sent Events for streaming. |
| Credential context | The MCP HTTP authorization specification does not apply; credentials should instead come from the environment. | If the server supports HTTP authorization, the cited authorization specification describes OAuth discovery and access-token handling. |
| Network protections | Network-specific protections such as HTTP Origin validation are not the same concern for stdio. | Protect the network connection, validate Origin, and apply the endpoint’s authentication requirements. |
The 2025-11-25 transport specification replaces the earlier HTTP+SSE transport with Streamable HTTP. Check that the client and server implement compatible versions before relying on a particular flow.
How does authentication work for a protected remote MCP server?
The following sequence describes the MCP Authorization specification dated 2025-11-25. When a client requests a protected HTTP resource, the server can respond with HTTP 401 and point the client to OAuth Protected Resource Metadata, using a WWW-Authenticate header or a well-known metadata URI. That metadata identifies the authorization server.

- Discover the authorization server. The client reads the protected-resource metadata and then discovers the authorization server’s metadata.
- Authorize the client. The client runs the OAuth authorization flow and obtains an access token.
- Send the MCP request with the token. The client retries its request with
Authorization: Bearer <access-token>. It should send the token in the HTTP header, not a URL query string. - Validate the token at the MCP server. The server acts as a resource server and checks that the token is valid and intended for that MCP server. An invalid or expired token should result in HTTP 401 under the cited specification.
The specification states: “MCP servers MUST only accept tokens that are valid for use with their own resources.” The token grants access at the MCP server boundary; it does not automatically authorize every tool action or supply credentials for services the server calls.
Why does an MCP server need separate credentials for upstream APIs?
If an MCP server calls an upstream API, it must use a token intended for that separate resource. The server must not pass the access token it received from the MCP client through to the upstream API. This keeps the MCP token scoped to the MCP server rather than treating it as a general-purpose credential.

For a production agent, Google Cloud recommends using a separate agent or workload identity rather than a developer’s personal identity, and granting only the minimum permissions needed. That is Google Cloud’s provider-specific recommendation, not a universal MCP requirement.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- HTTPS and redirects: Authorization-server endpoints must use HTTPS. Redirect URIs must use HTTPS or localhost, and authorization servers must validate redirect URIs exactly.
- PKCE and state: MCP clients must use PKCE for authorization-code flows and use the S256 challenge method when technically capable. The cited security guidance says clients must verify PKCE support through authorization-server metadata. Clients should also use and check
statevalues in the authorization-code flow. - Token audience: MCP servers must validate incoming access tokens and accept only tokens intended for their own resources. They must not forward the inbound MCP token to an upstream API.
- Origin and local binding: The 2025-11-25 transport specification requires servers to validate an incoming
Originheader to prevent DNS rebinding. A server run locally should bind to localhost rather than all network interfaces; servers should authenticate connections. - Least privilege: Give an agent or workload only the permissions it needs, using an identity appropriate to the deployment rather than casually reusing a developer’s identity.
What should you verify about a provider’s implementation?
Protocol support does not guarantee that every server offers the same sign-in options. Check the provider’s documentation for the authentication requirements of the specific endpoint, accepted identity types, permissions or scopes, token audience and lifetime, and supported discovery or client-registration mechanisms.
For example, Google Cloud documentation last updated 2026-09-30 says its Google and Google Cloud remote MCP servers implement the 2026-07-28 authorization specification for HTTP transports. It describes user, workload, and agent identities, notes that endpoint authentication needs can vary, and says those endpoints do not support Dynamic Client Registration or OAuth Client ID Metadata Documents. These details apply to that provider’s documented services, not to all MCP servers.

Why does the specification date matter?
MCP’s authorization and transport details evolve. The flow and transport specifics above are from the 2025-11-25 specification. The maintainers describe the 2026-07-28 specification as a substantial revision with a stateless protocol core and authorization hardening, and note that it contains breaking changes. Google Cloud’s documentation provides one example of a provider adopting that later authorization version.
When implementing or troubleshooting a connection, identify the specification version supported by both client and server and consult their current documentation. Do not assume that behavior described for one dated version carries over unchanged to another.

What do security studies say about real-world deployments?
A 2026 arXiv preprint, A First Measurement Study on Authentication Security in Real-World Remote MCP Servers, reports testing 119 OAuth-enabled remote MCP servers and identifying 325 flaws. The authors report at least one flaw in each server they tested and say dynamic-client-registration flaws affected 96.6% of that sample. These are findings about the tested servers, not a rate that can be generalized to every remote MCP server.
