To send Kubernetes GPU workload traffic through a second NIC, select the intended interface or source IP in the right network namespace, then ensure Linux has a route—and a viable return path—for that traffic. A second address on the host alone does not create a pod interface or make applications use it. Keep host routing, pod-network attachment, application socket selection, and Kubernetes control traffic distinct when designing the setup.

First identify which network layer needs to change

A multi-homed node can have several interfaces and addresses, but that does not mean every pod can use every interface. Kubernetes networking is implemented by the container runtime and network plugins, commonly CNI. Kubernetes represents node and pod addresses in its API; adding a host NIC does not automatically create a pod network or change the node’s Kubernetes address. This is the distinction described in Kubernetes’ Cluster Networking documentation.

  • Host routing determines how traffic originating in the host network namespace leaves the node.
  • Pod attachment determines which interfaces and addresses exist inside a pod’s network namespace.
  • Application socket selection determines whether an application uses a particular source address or interface.
  • Return routing determines whether replies can get back to the selected source through a valid path.

Decide first whether the second NIC is for host processes, selected sockets in a pod, or a separate interface attached to a pod. The implementation and permissions differ for each.

Choose the scope of traffic you want to steer

Approach Best fit What it changes Key constraint
Bind an application socket to a source IP Only the sockets or application traffic that need a particular source address Socket source selection; Linux still needs a matching route and return path The chosen address must be available in the application’s network namespace
Bind a socket to an interface Applications that need to constrain selected sockets to a particular device Socket-to-interface selection; kernel routing must still support the destination Google’s GPU VM guidance says its SO_BINDTODEVICE pattern needs CAP_NET_RAW
Use policy routing Traffic selected by source address or other policy criteria, rather than changing the route for all traffic Which routing table or path the kernel consults for matching traffic Rules, tables, routes, and return paths must match the actual IP plan and route manager
Attach a secondary pod network A workload that needs another interface inside its pod network namespace Pod interface and address configuration through cluster networking components Requires a supported secondary CNI network and IPAM configuration
Use a dedicated network namespace Isolation of an application’s networking and routes from other processes The network devices and routes visible in that namespace Privileges and platform support vary; Google documents specific GKE limitations

These methods are not interchangeable. For example, binding a socket to an address does not attach that address to a pod, and a secondary pod interface does not by itself guarantee that every application socket will select it.

Set the source address or interface at the application layer

Bind to a source IP

An application can use bind() to select the local source address for a socket. This is useful when only particular connections should leave with the address assigned to the secondary path. The address must exist in the network namespace where the application runs, and the kernel must have a route that can carry packets from that source to the destination.

Bind to an interface

Linux applications can use SO_BINDTODEVICE to associate a socket with a network device. Google’s guidance for GPU VMs notes that this option requires CAP_NET_RAW. A device binding is not a replacement for a correct route: check that the selected interface can reach the destination and that replies can return through an appropriate path.

Binding a privileged source port has its own permission requirement. Do not grant broad container privileges just to make one socket-selection method work; check the application, container security policy, and platform requirements first.

Make route selection and return traffic agree

A source address or device choice does not force Linux to invent a matching gateway or route. The node or pod namespace needs a route from the selected source/interface to the destination. If multiple interfaces or gateways are present, policy routing may be needed so traffic with the selected source follows the intended table and replies use a viable return path. Google Cloud’s multi-NIC GPU VM guidance specifically warns that routes may be needed to prevent asymmetric routing.

There is no universal route-table command for this setup. The correct rule and route depend on interface names, address prefixes, gateways, CNI behavior, distribution, and the system that manages networking. A command that changes a default route without those details can steer unrelated traffic—including platform or cluster traffic—onto the wrong NIC. Design and verify the route in the same namespace where the workload sends packets.

  • Confirm the selected interface and source address are present in the workload’s network namespace.
  • Confirm the route decision for the destination uses the intended interface and source.
  • Confirm the next hop and upstream network can route replies back to that source address.
  • Check whether a policy rule, source-specific route, or separate routing table is required for the intended traffic.
  • Determine how the route configuration persists across node reboot, network-manager updates, and CNI or operator upgrades.

Attach a secondary network to pods when the workload needs another pod interface

If the application needs a second interface inside its pod, configure a secondary network supported by the cluster rather than assuming that a host NIC automatically appears in pods. This requires the cluster’s CNI and IPAM configuration, including a mechanism to attach the network to the workload.

NVIDIA’s Network Operator v25.7 deployment guide includes a secondary-network example using Multus, CNI plugins, and an IPAM plugin. Treat that as a release-specific deployment example, not a universal manifest: check the guide for the Network Operator release and Kubernetes environment actually deployed. Host-device network guidance in that release covers Ethernet and InfiniBand and discusses SR-IOV physical and virtual functions in virtualized deployments.

Keep the pod’s primary network intact unless the platform explicitly supports changing its role. A secondary attachment can serve workload data traffic while the primary interface continues to support Kubernetes networking.

Preserve the primary interface for Kubernetes traffic

Do not assume that a change to a pod’s default route is safe for cluster traffic. Google states that GKE requires the primary interface for Kubernetes-internal communication, even when a pod’s default route is changed to a secondary interface. That is a GKE-specific constraint; other Kubernetes distributions may behave differently. Verify the requirements for the target platform before changing a default route or steering broad traffic classes.

Where a dedicated network namespace is considered, Google documents a pattern requiring CAP_SYS_ADMIN and says that pattern is not compatible with GKE Autopilot; on GKE, it requires a privileged container. These are Google platform constraints, not general Kubernetes guarantees. Check whether the required capability and privilege model is permitted by the cluster’s security policy before designing around it.

Account for GPU networking hardware and NUMA placement

GPU networking may use ordinary Ethernet, InfiniBand, SR-IOV, RDMA, or GPU Direct RDMA. These options depend on the actual NIC, GPU and server platform, drivers, kernel support, cabling or transceivers, and operator configuration; a route change alone does not enable RDMA or GPU Direct RDMA.

NVIDIA’s Network Operator v2.37 documentation says: “The Network Operator works in conjunction with the GPU-Operator to enable GPU-Direct RDMA on compatible systems.” Its role includes managing networking components such as drivers, device plugins, and secondary-network components. Compatibility is conditional, so verify the support matrix and deployment instructions for the node rather than inferring support from a NIC’s link type or speed.

Hardware configuration can also be release- and topology-specific. NVIDIA’s v25.10 guide describes an example using different NVIDIA NICs for RDMA shared-device and SR-IOV network functions, and says those networking types cannot be combined on the same NIC in that configuration. That limitation should not be generalized into a universal rule for all NICs or deployments.

For high-throughput workloads, consider NUMA locality as well as the route. Google recommends aligning network activity with the NUMA node associated with the selected GPU VM interface and cautions that multi-interface workloads can span NUMA nodes. Where the platform exposes multiple NUMA domains, review CPU and memory placement alongside GPU and NIC affinity.

Validate the design before changing production routing

  1. Map the intended traffic. Record whether it originates on the host or in a pod, which destinations it must reach, and whether the second NIC is for selected sockets or an entire workload network.
  2. Map the namespaces and addresses. Confirm where the interface and source IP exist: host namespace, pod namespace, or a dedicated namespace.
  3. Check the platform’s network contract. Identify the CNI, any secondary-network and IPAM configuration, the primary-interface requirements, and the operator versions in use.
  4. Specify both directions. Define the outbound route and the return path for the chosen source. Include upstream routing, not just the node’s local route table.
  5. Check security and hardware prerequisites. Verify required capabilities, container privileges, NIC and GPU compatibility, drivers, and NUMA topology.
  6. Plan persistence and recovery. Determine which system owns host routes and how the configuration behaves after reboot or a networking/operator upgrade. Test without removing the path Kubernetes needs for control traffic.

Exact route commands and manifests are environment-dependent: the NIC names, addresses, gateways, network manager, CNI, IPAM, Kubernetes distribution, and hardware are not specified here. Use the release-specific platform documentation and the site’s actual IP plan to build those settings rather than copying a generic default-route command.
