Acoustic levitation can hold certain small objects at stable points in midair, but it does not make them stick to an ordinary ceiling. In a standing-wave levitator, sound waves create forces that can counter gravity and trap a suitable object between a sound source and a reflector.
What “sticking to a ceiling” means in acoustic levitation
The object is suspended in an acoustic field, not attached to the ceiling surface. Its apparent stillness comes from acoustic radiation forces balancing its weight at a stable position in air. The effect requires a suitable sound field and object; it is not a way to make arbitrary household items adhere overhead.
How a standing-wave levitator holds an object
A common arrangement sends sound toward a reflector so the outgoing and reflected waves overlap. Their interference forms a standing wave with locations where the acoustic forces can trap a particle. When those forces counteract gravity and restore the particle toward an equilibrium position after a small displacement, the object can remain suspended.
The trap depends on the object as well as the apparatus. A 2022 study of expanded-polystyrene particles in a 40 kHz air levitator found that particle size affected where trapping occurred: some sizes were trapped near pressure nodes, others near pressure antinodes, and some sizes showed maximum or null trapping stiffness. That means the same setup cannot be assumed to work for every size, shape, or material. The study in Physical Review Applied documents those size-dependent effects.

What documented demonstrations have suspended
A 2017 educational apparatus report described levitating multiple expanded-polystyrene pieces measuring 1–2 mm. That is a specific classroom demonstration, not a universal operating specification or a promise that similarly sized objects of another material will work. The report appeared in The Physics Teacher.
These examples are deliberately small and lightweight. The cited demonstrations do not establish a household recipe for levitating ordinary objects such as coins, decorations, or pieces of furniture.

What equipment documented designs use
Two-transducer teaching apparatus
An EPFL Robotics Practicals record describes an apparatus in which two ultrasonic transducers generate acoustic traps. The record provides apparatus files and a laboratory manual; it is an academic resource, not evidence that the apparatus is a retail kit. Its trapping force is stronger vertically, in the direction needed to counter gravity, than radially. As a result, lateral movement has to be relatively slow to avoid losing the object. See the EPFL apparatus record and resources.
Annular plate and reflector design
A 2014 engineering thesis describes a different design using Langevin-type piezoelectric transducers and waveguides to excite a vibrating annular plate. A concave reflector is positioned to form standing waves between the plate and reflector, where small particles were suspended at pressure nodes. This is one researched engineering arrangement, not a required or validated home-build design. Read the thesis.

How conventional and long-range approaches differ
Most conventional standing-wave arrangements rely on opposing sound directions, such as a source and reflector, to stabilize an object within the device. A separate research direction uses a single-sided beam, which can work at greater distances but involves specialized apparatus and control.
| Approach | Documented example | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Standing-wave trap | Two ultrasonic transducers in the EPFL teaching apparatus; source and reflector in the annular design described in the 2014 thesis. | Trapping depends on the acoustic geometry and particle properties. In the EPFL apparatus, vertical holding force is stronger than radial force. |
| Single-sided beam | A University of Bristol release dated 26 August 2026 describes a zero-order Bessel-beam source. | The reported research demonstration held a 1.5 mm polystyrene sphere as far as 40 cm from the source and manipulated it in three dimensions. The university described the distance as about six times farther than previous single-sided acoustic traps. This is a specialized research result, not a simple ceiling-mounted technique or a readily reproducible household build. |
The University of Bristol release quotes Professor of Ultrasonics Bruce Drinkwater: “When you have a conventional acoustic levitator, the soundwaves from opposing directions stabilise the object within the device.” Professor Tatsuki Fushimi of the University of Tsukuba described potential applications for the long-range technique as automated experiments, three-dimensional displays, and handling fragile materials or hazardous substances.

What to expect from a practical setup
The documented sources describe research and teaching apparatus, not a validated household build procedure. They do not establish a universal component list, operating settings for arbitrary objects, or an exposure assessment. A person working with a specific apparatus should follow its manufacturer’s or laboratory manual’s operating and safety guidance rather than treating the general physics here as build instructions.

- Choose an apparatus documented for the intended object and operating geometry; compatibility cannot be inferred from the word “ultrasonic” alone.
- Expect object size and material to matter: particle-size effects can change trapping position and stiffness.
- For a standing-wave device, account for the required source-reflector geometry and limited lateral stability where the design exhibits stronger vertical than radial trapping.
- Do not assume an academic apparatus archive or manual means a complete commercial kit is available.
