Kubernetes has alternatives to SR-IOV for multi-node GPU training, but none is a universal drop-in replacement. NVIDIA documents RDMA shared-device networking with MacVLAN or IPoIB, and host-device networking. Choose among them based on the fabric, device-sharing and isolation requirements, GPU data path, and supported operator configuration—then benchmark the actual training workload.

What SR-IOV provides—and what an alternative must replace

SR-IOV divides a physical NIC into virtual functions (VFs). With the relevant device-plugin and CNI components, a VF can be allocated to a pod, giving the pod a dedicated network function. NVIDIA documents this as a hardware-accelerated path with per-pod VF allocation.

An alternative may change how the network device is shared or exposed, but that does not establish the same per-pod allocation or isolation. It also does not, by itself, establish equivalent training performance. Compare the resource Kubernetes allocates, the network isolation the workload needs, and the data path it can actually use.

Which alternatives are documented?

Profile Fabric or attachment Sharing and access What to validate
RDMA shared device with MacVLAN Ethernet/RoCE with a MacVLAN secondary network RDMA resources are shared; NVIDIA describes shared mode as suitable when RDMA device isolation between network namespaces is not required. This is not per-pod VF isolation. Confirm that shared-device behavior fits the tenancy model and that the operator release and NIC support the intended RoCE configuration.
RDMA shared device with IPoIB InfiniBand using IP over InfiniBand (IPoIB) Uses shared RDMA resources; it is not a dedicated VF allocation. Validate InfiniBand device support, operator release, and network configuration for the target cluster.
Host-device network Direct access to a network device NVIDIA’s quick-start describes exclusive hardware access. A device assigned exclusively cannot be used concurrently by multiple pods. Check whether direct control is needed and whether exclusive assignment fits the number of pods that must run at once.
SR-IOV baseline VF provisioned to a pod with the relevant device plugin and CNI Provides per-pod VF allocation rather than the shared-device model; use it where dedicated VF allocation and isolation are requirements. Confirm NIC, driver, CNI, plugin, and operator compatibility for the target release.

The profile distinctions above reflect NVIDIA Network Operator deployment and quick-start documentation. A documented profile is a configuration option, not proof that every NIC, cluster, or workload supports it.

RDMA networking does not automatically mean GPUDirect RDMA

RDMA and GPUDirect RDMA are separate capabilities. NVIDIA describes RDMA as memory-to-memory transfer that bypasses the CPU and kernel networking stack, with InfiniBand and RoCE support. A pod having a secondary network is not, on its own, evidence that its GPU data transfers use GPUDirect RDMA.

GPUDirect RDMA requires compatible systems and coordinated Network Operator and GPU Operator configuration. Verify the GPU, NIC, drivers, and operator versions together. Do not infer GPU-direct transfers merely from selecting MacVLAN, IPoIB, or host-device networking.

Choose by isolation, fabric, and scheduling needs

Use shared RDMA when device sharing fits the tenancy model

RDMA shared-device mode is a candidate when multiple workloads can share RDMA resources and the documented configuration matches the cluster’s fabric. With RoCE, NVIDIA documents a MacVLAN pairing; with InfiniBand, its quick-start includes IPoIB with shared RDMA resources. Neither pairing should be treated as per-pod VF isolation.

Use host-device when a workload needs exclusive direct access

Host-device networking is worth evaluating when software needs direct device control and exclusive hardware access is acceptable. Its practical constraint is capacity: exclusive assignment limits how many pods can use that device concurrently. Check how the device is advertised and allocated to pods in the target deployment.

Keep SR-IOV when dedicated per-pod VFs are a requirement

If the tenancy model depends on a dedicated VF for each training pod, SR-IOV remains the documented fit among these profiles. A shared RDMA device changes the sharing model; host-device changes access and exclusivity. Neither should be selected on the assumption that it reproduces VF allocation.

Check compatibility before choosing a profile

NVIDIA’s documentation spans versioned releases, including Network Operator v25.10 quick-start material, v26.4 overview material, and platform-support listings for v26.12. Those references are not one universal compatibility guarantee. Use the support matrix for the specific operator release and exact operating system, GPU, NIC, and fabric combination.

Some network types cannot be combined on the same NIC. A cluster that needs multiple profiles may therefore require separate NICs, depending on its supported configuration. Treat the full combination—including firmware, drivers, CNI and IPAM components, and network attachment—as a compatibility decision, not an isolated Kubernetes setting. NVIDIA Network Operator manages relevant drivers and networking components, and its GPUDirect RDMA deployment involves coordination with GPU Operator on compatible systems.

The v25.10 quick-start profiles help distinguish the options, but their example commands and version prerequisites should not be copied as current installation instructions without checking the target release.

Validate the training workload, not just the network attachment

The cited documentation does not establish a controlled, head-to-head multi-node training benchmark that names a universal winner among these profiles. It also does not justify carrying example bandwidth or latency figures from a quick-start use-case profile over as comparative results.

Benchmark the actual collective workload on the intended topology and configuration. Compare the same training job, GPU and NIC combination, fabric, and placement conditions, and verify that the expected RDMA or GPUDirect RDMA path is active. A network attachment that deploys successfully is not, by itself, evidence of an equivalent training outcome.

  • Identify whether the cluster uses Ethernet/RoCE or InfiniBand, and select a documented profile for that fabric.
  • Decide whether pods need dedicated VFs, can share RDMA resources, or require exclusive direct device access.
  • Confirm what Kubernetes advertises and allocates: a VF, a shared RDMA device, or an exclusive host device.
  • Check support for the exact operator release, operating system, GPU, NIC, firmware, drivers, and network components.
  • Verify separately whether the workload needs RDMA or GPUDirect RDMA, and validate the corresponding compatible configuration.
  • Benchmark the real multi-node training workload before treating one profile as a performance replacement for another.

Practical decision

Start by evaluating shared RDMA-device mode if sharing is acceptable and NVIDIA’s supported profile matches the fabric. Consider host-device networking when exclusive direct access is needed and its capacity constraint is workable. Retain SR-IOV when dedicated per-pod VF allocation and isolation are requirements. In each case, make the final choice from release-specific compatibility checks and measured workload behavior—not from the network-type name alone.
