You cannot guarantee SSH will return after a remote kernel reboot, so prepare a working console or out-of-band recovery route before starting. Install the supported kernel update, reboot in a maintenance window, then confirm both network access and the running kernel. Installing a kernel package alone does not activate it; the old kernel remains in memory until reboot.
What differs between Ubuntu, Debian, and RHEL?
| System | Update channel and kernel considerations | Live-patching option |
|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu | Use the supported repositories and package workflow for the installed release, architecture, and kernel flavor. Canonical notes that Livepatch does not install APT security updates automatically. | Livepatch can apply selected high- and critical-severity vulnerability fixes on supported releases, kernels, flavors, and architectures. |
| Debian | Use the target release’s supported packages. Debian stable release notes recommend an appropriate linux-image-* metapackage so future kernel updates are included; check the release notes for the installed stable release. |
The cited Debian guidance does not establish a general live-patching service comparable to the Ubuntu and RHEL options described here. |
| Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) | Use supported Red Hat repositories and procedures for the subscribed release. Kernel package and support eligibility vary by release, architecture, and subscription. | Red Hat kpatch covers selected important and critical CVEs on supported systems; it is not a general kernel upgrade mechanism. |
These are not interchangeable command sequences. The package name and transaction depend on release, architecture, repository configuration, and whether the host uses a cloud or custom kernel. Red Hat’s kpatch eligibility also depends on the host’s active subscription.
Before updating, confirm how you will recover the server
- Identify the system. Record its distribution and release, architecture, current running kernel with
uname -r, package source, bootloader, and boot mode. Note whether it uses custom kernels, encrypted root, unusual storage, or special network drivers. - Verify an independent access path. Confirm that you can reach a provider console, BMC/IPMI, serial-over-LAN, hypervisor console, or other out-of-band management route before the maintenance window. A serial console helps only if the server exposes it and the access route is configured. Debian’s security guidance specifically identifies console access as useful for diagnosing reboot problems during remote updates.
- Check the boot fallback. Know how to select a previously working kernel in the bootloader, and confirm that a known-good option is retained according to local policy. The exact menu and recovery controls depend on the bootloader and hosting platform.
- Check boot storage and the package plan. Review which packages will be installed or removed, confirm there is room for kernel and initramfs files, and resolve any incomplete package transaction before proceeding.
Install the kernel update through the supported package workflow
Use the package manager and repositories intended for the installed distribution and release. For RHEL, follow the supported Red Hat procedure applicable to the subscribed release. Do not assume a command or kernel package name applies across Ubuntu, Debian, and RHEL—or even across all releases and machine architectures within one distribution.
On Debian stable, use the appropriate linux-image-* metapackage recommended for the target release if you want subsequent kernel updates to be included. Debian’s release notes also advise reviewing pre-reboot tasks. For any system, read the package manager’s proposed transaction before accepting it, especially removals or changes to boot-related packages.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Package installation prepares the new kernel and boot artifacts; it does not replace the kernel currently running in memory. Schedule the reboot separately, communicate the expected interruption, and avoid beginning while another package transaction is incomplete.
Reboot in a controlled maintenance window
Use the host’s normal operational procedure to reboot after the package update is complete. Keep the recovery console available during startup. If feasible, leave the existing SSH session open while also planning to test a fresh connection once the host returns; an existing session alone does not demonstrate that new SSH connections or application traffic work.

A reboot is required for a conventional kernel update to become the running kernel. Debian’s security guidance warns administrators updating over SSH to ensure that the new kernel boots and network connectivity returns. Canonical’s “When to reboot” documentation likewise says Livepatch is not sufficient when upgrading to a newer kernel.
Verify the host after it starts
- Test from outside the host. Check reachability over the expected network path and open a fresh SSH session.
- Confirm the active kernel. Run
uname -rand compare the result with the intended installed target. If it reports the previous kernel, the server has not yet booted into the updated one. - Check system health. Inspect boot and system logs for errors, then verify critical services and application health. A working SSH login does not by itself prove that dependent services recovered.
If SSH does not return, use the prepared console path to inspect boot errors. If the bootloader offers a known-good kernel, select it to restore service while you investigate; otherwise follow the recovery procedure for the hosting provider or hardware platform. Debian recommends checking network connectivity after reboot, but the available recovery controls vary by host.

Can live patching avoid a reboot?
It can apply certain kernel fixes while a supported system remains running, but it does not replace normal kernel maintenance. Coverage is selective and depends on the vulnerability, whether a fix can be live-patched, and the system’s release and configuration.
Ubuntu Livepatch
Canonical describes Livepatch as applying selected high- and critical-severity kernel vulnerability fixes without a system reboot. It does not automatically enable APT security updates, and it cannot substitute for moving to a newer kernel. Kernel fixes outside its scope, unpatchable vulnerabilities, and other low-level updates can still require a conventional update and reboot.

Red Hat kpatch
Red Hat describes kpatch as applying live patches for selected important and critical CVEs on supported RHEL systems. Coverage depends on release and architecture. Red Hat’s Customer Portal article, updated September 1, 2026, says continued kpatch updates require a kernel upgrade and reboot cadence that varies by subscription: at least once per year for certain EUS subscriptions and twice for standard subscriptions. Those intervals are vendor guidance tied to those subscription types, not a universal Linux maintenance schedule; check current eligibility and cadence for the host.

Do not assume unattended maintenance leaves active services or remote sessions untouched. Ubuntu Server documentation says unattended-upgrades can reboot when a reboot is requested, but its automatic-reboot option defaults to false. Check the host’s actual configuration rather than inferring behavior from the default.

On Ubuntu 24.04, needrestart restarts affected services automatically by default after relevant updates. Ubuntu documents configuration to defer selected restarts for a planned maintenance window. Review the machine’s configuration and logs so package-driven service restarts do not surprise operators during critical work.
Make the maintenance plan specific to the host
Before scheduling a remote kernel update, make sure the recovery route, boot fallback, package transaction, maintenance window, and post-reboot checks are all defined for this particular machine. Network initialization, storage, drivers, encrypted root, cloud-image tooling, and management-platform behavior can all affect recovery; neither distribution name nor a successful package installation proves the server will be reachable afterward.
