Estimate the actual size of the photos and videos you plan to keep at your chosen Google Photos backup quality, add future growth, then subtract the space already used by Photos, Gmail, and Drive from your Google Account’s shared storage.
What determines how much storage your backup needs?
Backup quality
Google Photos offers Original quality and Storage saver. Original quality keeps the resolution captured and uses Google Account storage. Storage saver can reduce quality: it resizes photos larger than 16 MP to 16 MP and videos above 1080p to 1080p. Google says 16 MP photos can produce good-quality prints up to 24 by 16 inches. Some items cannot be compressed, so Storage saver does not promise a fixed percentage or amount of space saved. See Google’s Android backup-quality guidance.
Videos and capture habits
Video can take up more space than photos, but there is no universal file size per minute: duration, bitrate, scene, and camera settings all affect the result. Use the size of videos you actually record rather than converting minutes into an assumed storage amount.
Shared Google Account storage
Google provides up to 15 GB per account, shared across Google Photos, Gmail, and Google Drive. That is the account’s total, not the amount available solely for photos; existing mail, files, and media reduce the room left for a backup. Check your account’s actual usage before choosing a plan.

Older uploads and device-specific benefits
New Storage saver uploads count against Google Account storage. Google’s historical exception applies to Storage saver uploads made before June 1, 2021; it does not make new uploads exempt. Google also documents legacy Pixel storage benefits tied to particular devices and dates, so do not assume a new Android phone includes unlimited photo backup.
How to estimate your own storage requirement
- Check the backup and current usage. In Google Photos, review the account’s storage and backup status. Open representative photos and videos and swipe up to see their backup details and item size. Google’s storage-management guidance also describes ways to find what is using space.
- Choose the quality you intend to use. Pick Original quality if retaining captured resolution matters most. Pick Storage saver only if its documented resizing and quality changes suit your needs; confirm the result with actual items rather than expecting every file to compress.
- Total the media you plan to back up. Use the pending backup size shown in Photos if available, or total the selected files’ sizes. A representative sample can help, but do not turn a handful of photos into a universal per-photo estimate.
- Allow for future growth. Use your own capture history to estimate how much you add in a typical month or year, including video, then project over the period you want covered. This is a personal planning estimate, not a Google-published average.
- Subtract other account usage. Compare your projected photo-and-video need with the remaining shared quota after Gmail, Drive, and existing Photos content. Google’s storage manager can help identify large files you may want to move or remove.
- Decide whether you need more capacity. If the measured need exceeds your remaining space, compare current Google One storage plans in your country. Available tiers and prices can change by location and over time, so check the local plan page rather than relying on an old price list.
Choosing between Original quality and Storage saver

Choose based on how important captured resolution is, what your own files measure, how much shared quota remains, how far ahead you are planning, and whether you prefer to pay for added cloud space or keep a separate local copy.

When to add storage or keep another copy
Google One is the direct option when your measured backup need exceeds your remaining Google Account capacity. As examples rather than a permanent or universal plan list, Google’s page last updated July 16, 2026 lists 100 GB Basic and 5 TB Google AI Pro; it says Basic and higher can be shared with up to five others. Check availability and pricing for your locale on the current plan page.
A USB-C external SSD can be an optional second local copy, but it is not required for Google Photos. Check that the drive works with your particular Android device and backup workflow. A local copy and a cloud backup are separate choices; confirm that Photos has finished backing up the items you expect before relying on the cloud copy.

Why generic “number of photos” estimates can mislead
Google’s 2021 policy announcement estimated that more than 80 percent of users had roughly three more years of memories in High quality with the free 15 GB. That was a dated estimate made in the context of a policy change, not a current forecast for an individual library. It cannot tell you how much space your photos and videos will need now. The reliable estimate comes from your own media sizes, backup setting, account usage, and growth.
