To convert Bitcoin to U.S. dollars, multiply the amount of BTC by a BTC/USD rate from a source you identify and timestamp. For taxes, that dollar value is not automatically your gain: gain or loss generally depends on the amount realized from a disposition minus your adjusted basis. This guide covers U.S. federal tax orientation; state and non-U.S. rules, and taxpayer-specific situations, may differ.
Convert a Bitcoin amount to U.S. dollars
Use this calculation:
BTC amount × BTC/USD rate = U.S.-dollar value
For example, if you hold 0.02 BTC and use a rate of $50,000 per BTC, the arithmetic gives $1,000. That is an illustration, not a current quote or a statement of what you would receive in a sale.
Bitcoin prices move continuously, and sources may report an exchange-specific price or an aggregate from multiple markets. For a useful record, note the rate, its source, and the date and time it applies to. For U.S. federal valuation, IRS Notice 2014-21 says to convert a listed virtual currency into U.S. dollars using an exchange rate determined in a reasonable manner and applied consistently: IRS Notice 2014-21.
Choose a rate that fits the transaction
For a transaction made through an exchange, retain the exchange’s transaction details and the applicable rate. For a transaction not facilitated by an exchange, IRS guidance describes fair market value at the time recorded on the distributed ledger; an explorer can be used as evidence when it accurately represents the value: IRS virtual currency transaction FAQs.

Historical price data can help when you need a rate for a past date, but check its coverage and time granularity against the transaction time. CoinGecko documents historical market-chart and date-specific history data, with availability depending on coverage: CoinGecko API documentation and CoinGecko Bitcoin historical data guide. It is one possible data source, not an official or exclusive tax valuation source.
Calculate gain or loss separately from the dollar value
The U.S. tax calculation is not simply the current value of your crypto, nor is it necessarily the full cash received in a sale. The IRS describes gain or loss as the difference between adjusted basis and amount realized. Amount realized includes cash and applicable services received, reduced by transaction costs allocable to the disposition: IRS digital asset transaction FAQs.

In simplified form:
Gain or loss = amount realized − adjusted basis
If you acquired an asset for $800 and later dispose of it for an amount realized of $1,000, the simplified difference is a $200 gain before considering any other basis adjustments or circumstances. The $1,000 is the amount realized in this example, not the profit.
Work out your adjusted basis
For crypto you purchased, basis generally starts with the U.S.-dollar amount paid, including qualifying acquisition fees, commissions, and other costs. An asset received as compensation or through another means can have a different basis rule; service income, for example, is generally valued in dollars when received. Do not use today’s price as a substitute for the historical value or cost relevant to your acquisition. See the IRS overview of digital assets and its virtual currency transaction FAQs.

Keep the evidence needed to reconstruct basis, such as purchase confirmations, exchange statements, receipt records, and transaction timestamps. If you acquired units at different times or in different ways, retain enough detail to identify the relevant acquisition history for the units disposed of.
Account for transaction fees carefully
Not every fee associated with crypto necessarily affects gain in the same way. The IRS describes qualifying transaction costs as fees for services that effect a purchase, sale, or disposition, including transaction or gas fees, transfer taxes, and commissions. Fees for transfers between wallets you own are treated differently from costs that effect a disposition. Avoid automatically subtracting every network fee from proceeds or adding it to basis; apply the rule that fits the specific fee and transaction. See the IRS digital asset transaction FAQs.

Keep records, including when you receive Form 1099-DA
For each relevant acquisition, receipt, sale, exchange, disposition, or transfer, keep records that identify the asset, date and time, units, U.S.-dollar fair market value, and basis information. Preserve the source and timestamp for any valuation you use. These records help explain both the conversion and the tax calculation.
Form 1099-DA reports proceeds and, in some cases, basis for covered broker transactions. Receiving the form does not remove your obligation to report digital asset income, gains, or losses, and the form may not include your complete basis history. The IRS explains the form and reporting reminder in Understanding your Form 1099-DA.

Know where the transaction is reported
For applicable digital assets held as capital assets, the IRS directs taxpayers to Form 8949 to report dispositions and Schedule D to summarize capital gains and losses. Some digital asset income, including certain staking, mining, or service receipts, may be reported differently. The appropriate treatment depends on the transaction and taxpayer’s circumstances. Check the current instructions for the relevant tax year, including the IRS Instructions for Form 8949 (2025) and the IRS digital assets overview.
