Start with your boat’s length, then choose fenders for the hull’s contact points and the conditions at your berth. Length charts are a starting point, not a guarantee: an exposed slip, pilings, tidal movement, rafting, or a concrete lock can call for a different fender shape, size, or arrangement.

How to choose the right fender size

Use the manufacturer’s chart for the fender model you are considering. Polyform’s chart maps boat-length ranges to several possible models and separates applications such as protected and unprotected moorings, pilings, rafting, and locks or concrete. Taylor Made describes its Hull-Gard sizing chart as a minimum recommendation and advises checking with your marina and docking neighbors about local conditions.

Then check whether the fender will cover the part of your hull that is likely to meet the dock. Consider the hull’s freeboard and shape, the height of the dock or piling, and how much stand-off the fender provides. Diameter and length both matter: a longer fender covers more vertical hull, while a larger diameter can provide more separation from the dock. These are selection considerations, not a universal sizing formula.

Polyform lists multiple model choices for each boat-length band; for example, its 20–25-foot band includes F-1, F-02, F-2, F-3, G-4, HTM-1, NF-4, A-1, and LD-1. The applicable model depends on the chart’s intended use as well as length, so do not select from the model names alone.

Match fender shape to the berth

Fender shape and orientation affect where and how protection can be placed. Polyform’s application guidance suggests buoy-shaped A or LD models for rafting and F or HTM options for pilings. It describes the NF as an extra-tough recreational option for higher-stress situations such as locks and tidal areas.

Taylor Made’s Big B has a center rope tube running end to end. Its design allows horizontal hanging, which can be useful around pilings and where tidal changes move the boat relative to the dock. Check the product’s instructions and the geometry of your berth before choosing a mounting orientation.

  • Protected slip: Begin with the chart’s protected-mooring guidance and check which part of the hull is likely to contact the dock.
  • Exposed berth or strong local movement: Use the unprotected-mooring guidance and consult the marina or neighboring boaters about prevailing conditions.
  • Pilings: Consider whether the piling’s shape and contact height call for a fender intended for that use, or a design that can hang horizontally.
  • Rafting: Consider buoy-shaped options identified for rafting and arrange coverage for the points where the boats may meet.
  • Locks or concrete: Use the applicable chart guidance and consider a model intended for higher-stress contact; do not assume an ordinary slip setup is sufficient.

Position fenders along the likely contact area

Polyform’s baseline for docking is: “Use at least three fenders when docking.” It suggests placing one aft, one at maximum beam, and one fore. Hang them between the hull and dock where contact is likely, and adjust their positions for the boat and berth. This is a baseline, not a guarantee that three will cover every hull or condition. Polyform notes that a buoy-shaped fender can provide more stand-off in some situations. Its guidance does not specify one universal spacing distance between fenders.

Attach fenders securely and use suitable line

Polyform recommends tying a fender to a cleat secured to the hull or deck, or to the base of a rail stanchion. It cautions against treating an upper rail as a secure attachment point. Set the line so the fender stays between the hull and the dock at the intended contact point.

Choose line that fits the fender’s ropehold. Polyform recommends at least 3/8-inch line for smaller fenders, increasing diameter with fender and ropehold size up to about 1 inch depending on the product. Its separate line guide advises using the largest diameter that fits. Line that is too small can concentrate wear at the ropehold; Polyform warns that undersized line can damage it and says it voids the company’s warranty. Polyform recommends nylon for its stretch and softer contact. Its line guide gives approximate line lengths of 8, 9, 11, and 13 feet; these are guide values, not a fit for every boat.

Inflate and store valve-equipped fenders as directed

For Polyform products, the manufacturer specifies an inflation pressure of 2.1 lb/0.15 bar. Follow the instructions for the actual fender in hand rather than applying that figure to another maker’s product. Polyform warns that overinflation can reduce performance, cause premature failure, and void its warranty.

If using Polyform’s method without a pressure gauge, its instructions say to inflate until the walls are fully expanded while retaining about 1/4 inch of depressibility under light hand pressure; the guide also provides circumference checks. Use the model’s actual valve instructions. Polyform says its inflatable products can be deflated, with stated exceptions for some small series, and recommends storing fenders out of direct sunlight.
