To troubleshoot Radeon driver crashes or black screens, first restore the GPU and system to stock settings, then check whether the problem matches a documented driver issue. If it persists, perform a clean driver installation and inspect the card’s power, seating and cooling. A black screen alone does not prove the GPU has failed, and no single driver version is right for every older Radeon card.

1. Identify when the failure happens

Before changing anything, note what changed shortly before the trouble began: a Radeon driver, game or application, Windows update, firmware update, or BIOS setting. Also record whether the screen goes black during startup, only in a particular game or video workload, or during ordinary desktop use.

Try to distinguish a temporary loss of display signal from a full system hang, crash, or reboot. That pattern helps narrow the cause and makes it less likely that you will change several things without learning which one mattered.

2. Restore a stable baseline

Unstable tuning, overheating, system configuration, and hardware faults can resemble a driver failure. Before reinstalling software, undo overclocking and GPU tuning and return the card to its factory settings. Temporarily close third-party monitoring or overclocking utilities as well.

ASUS Dual Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB GDDR6 Gaming Graphics Card
  • Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
  • 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
  • Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
  • Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
  • Check that the GPU and system cooling are working and clear dust where appropriate.
  • Use a stock configuration while troubleshooting, and check that supported system software is installed.
  • Change one thing at a time and note whether the symptom changes.

AMD’s general stability troubleshooting guidance includes unstable overclocking, overheating, BIOS or operating-system configuration, driver issues, and unsupported or faulty hardware among possible causes. It does not establish that any one cause is most common.

3. Check the driver before reinstalling it

Confirm the card and installed package

Find the exact Radeon model and driver version installed. Check that package’s AMD release notes for the affected product, operating system, symptom, and any listed workaround. If a documented workaround matches your issue, try it before replacing the driver.

For example, AMD’s Adrenalin 21.5.2 release notes warned that Enhanced Sync could cause black screens in some games and system configurations, and advised affected users to disable it temporarily. That is a historical, version-specific example—not evidence that Enhanced Sync causes every black screen. Use the notes for your own driver version.

Consider reverting if the issue followed an update

If the problem began immediately after a driver update and the release notes offer no fitting workaround, AMD advises considering a return to a version that did not produce the issue. Choose a version that supports your exact GPU and operating system; an older package’s compatibility list does not establish that it is the best choice today.

AMD also describes the installer’s Factory Reset option as a way to prepare for a clean installation. Follow the current instructions for the driver package and system you are using.

Use AMD Cleanup Utility for a clean removal

AMD Cleanup Utility removes previously installed AMD graphics and audio drivers and software to prepare for a fresh graphics-driver installation. AMD recommends running it in Windows Safe Mode for best results. Close or let Windows Update finish first if it is running.

  1. Download AMD Cleanup Utility and follow AMD’s current instructions to run it; use Windows Safe Mode for best results.
  2. Allow the cleanup to finish. The display may briefly flicker or go blank, and AMD says the process can take 15–20 minutes depending on the cleanup.
  3. Reboot when prompted, then install the compatible Radeon driver package you selected.

AMD says the utility creates a restore point before cleanup, and that a reboot is required afterward. A brief blank display during the utility’s work is an expected possibility; if the display does not return after the process and reboot, continue troubleshooting rather than assuming cleanup itself proves the card is faulty.

4. Check the physical hardware path

If the problem continues after returning to stock settings and addressing the driver, inspect the system with power disconnected and follow the computer or component maker’s safety instructions.

  • Check that the GPU’s PCIe power leads are secure and that the power supply is suitable for the system.
  • If a PCIe riser cable is installed, remove it temporarily to isolate it as a possible cause.
  • Verify that the GPU and system cooling are functioning.

If feasible, test with known-working hardware to help isolate the failing component. A swap test is a diagnostic step, not a reason to buy a new GPU or PSU before identifying the fault. If instability remains, contact the computer or component manufacturer.

5. Choose an older Radeon driver by exact compatibility

There is no universal “best driver” for older Radeon GPUs. Check AMD’s current compatibility information and release notes for the exact card and Windows version, then compare candidate packages by whether they support that hardware and whether their notes address the observed issue.

AMD’s Adrenalin 23.11.1 release notes listed Radeon VII, RX Vega products, Radeon Pro Duo, RX 500/500X, and RX 400 Series as compatible with that package. Those are compatibility details for the 2023 release only; they do not establish current support or make 23.11.1 the right driver for every system.

For laptops and all-in-one PCs, the manufacturer may provide a customized driver. AMD recommends the OEM driver when its general-purpose package causes system-specific problems. Compare the OEM package with AMD’s general package for your particular computer rather than assuming one fits every laptop.
