Use Solid when its signal-based, fine-grained updates match your interface and your team is comfortable with reactive tracking. Use React when you need its APIs or ecosystem, already have React code and dependencies, or prefer its component-render model. Both let you compose interfaces from reusable components, but similar-looking JSX does not make their state, component execution, or update behavior interchangeable. Neither is a universal performance winner; compare them against your application’s actual workload.

What composition means in Solid and React

Composition is the practice of assembling a user interface from reusable components and deciding where its state and behavior belong. JSX is syntax for describing UI, not evidence that the frameworks share component lifecycles or state semantics.

Solid components return JSX and initialize once. Reactive expressions then update targeted DOM regions as their tracked dependencies change. React components describe UI from their current props, state, and context; when relevant state changes, React may render the component and descendants again. These models lead to different ways of organizing shared state and reusable behavior.

How Solid composition works

Components initialize once; tracked expressions update

Solid’s component function runs during initialization rather than rerunning for every signal change. A signal read inside a tracked JSX expression or reactive scope subscribes that scope, so a change can update the associated DOM without rerunning the whole component. A read outside a tracking scope does not create that subscription. See Solid’s component basics and its reactivity guide.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This makes the location of a reactive read part of the design. Put values that should respond to changes in tracked expressions or appropriate reactive constructs; do not assume that an ordinary read in the component body will be reevaluated later.

State ownership and sharing

Solid’s reactive primitives are the foundation for state. Props are treated as read-only to support one-way data flow. For data used across components, Solid documents context and stores as options for organizing state; as an application and its interactions grow, state organization still needs deliberate ownership and structure. Keep derived values and side effects in suitable reactive constructs rather than relying on component reruns. The Solid state-management guide covers these patterns.

How React composition works

Components render from current inputs

A React component is a description of UI for its current props, state, and context. A state update can cause that component and its descendants to render again. React’s rules for components and Hooks support this render model; Hooks must be called according to React’s rules, and their logic runs as part of component rendering. See React’s rules and the Hooks reference.

React Compiler can automatically memoize supported components and values to avoid some unnecessary work. Whether that optimization applies depends on compiler support and project configuration, so it is inaccurate to say every React application must rely on hand-written memoization—or to assume the compiler is active everywhere. See the React Compiler documentation.

Sharing state and reusable behavior

When several React components need coordinated state, React recommends lifting it to their closest common parent and passing values and handlers to the participants. Context can provide values to distant descendants, while custom Hooks let components reuse logic within the render model. React describes lifting state as “one of the most common things you will do writing React code” in its guide to sharing state between components.

State preservation also depends on a component’s identity and position in the render tree; component types and keys affect whether React preserves or resets it. That behavior matters when composing conditional or reordered UI. See preserving and resetting state.

Solid and React composition compared

Decision area Solid React
Component execution Components initialize once; tracked reactive expressions respond to changes. Components describe UI for current props, state, and context; updates can trigger rendering.
Update propagation Signal reads in tracked scopes subscribe those scopes, enabling targeted DOM updates. State changes can cause component and descendant render work; React Compiler may reduce some unnecessary work when supported and configured.
Sharing state Reactive primitives, context, and stores support state organization; ownership and structure remain design decisions. Lift coordinated state to the closest common parent; use context when values need to reach distant descendants.
Reusable logic Use Solid’s reactive constructs and state patterns, mindful of tracking scope. Custom Hooks reuse logic within component rendering and must follow the Rules of Hooks.

When to choose Solid

  • Your team values explicit, fine-grained signal subscriptions, and the interface’s update pattern suits targeted reactive updates.
  • Your team understands that components initialize once and knows how to place reads in tracked scopes.
  • The libraries and deployment requirements for your particular project are supported by the Solid stack you plan to use. Check the actual dependencies: framework documentation alone cannot establish compatibility for every third-party library.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

When to choose React

  • Your application already uses React, or depends on React-specific APIs and libraries. Assess migration cost from the real dependency graph; JSX resemblance is not a compatibility guarantee.
  • Your team prefers React’s render model, Hooks, state-ownership conventions, or documented client, server, and static rendering APIs.
  • React Compiler is supported and configured for your application, so some manual memoization may not be necessary.

How to decide when performance matters

Do not select a framework based on a blanket claim that one is faster. The official documentation explains how each framework updates UI; it does not prove which will perform better for every application. Benchmark representative interactions with realistic data, using the versions, compiler and build configuration, and target devices intended for the project. Keep the comparison workload-specific: rendering a list, updating a form, or coordinating shared state may exercise different parts of each model.

Anker USB C Hub, 5-in-1 USBC to HDMI Splitter with 4K Display
  • 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Map the interface. Identify which components own state, which parts need to respond to it, and where multiple components must coordinate.
  2. Match the update model. Choose Solid if tracked signal reads and targeted updates fit the design; choose React if rendering UI from current props, state, and context fits better.
  3. Check dependencies and team knowledge. Verify required libraries and deployment needs directly, then account for existing code and the team’s ability to work with the framework’s semantics.
  4. Verify optimization setup. If relying on React Compiler to reduce manual memoization, confirm it is supported and configured for the project.
  5. Measure if performance is decisive. Compare representative interactions on the target devices with realistic data and the project’s intended versions and build configuration.
