Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If a Python function returns None unexpectedly, trace the path it took: a function returns the value from the last return statement it executes, and returns None if it reaches the end without one. A bare return also returns None. The fix is usually to return a value on every path that is supposed to produce one.
First, check what the call actually returned
Assign the result and display its representation at the call site:
result = calculate_total()
print(repr(result))
repr() makes None visible. In an interactive session, a lone None result may not be displayed, which can make a return-value problem look like missing output. The Python tutorial explains this interactive-display behavior.
A user-defined function call produces the value returned by the function unless it raises an exception. None is Python’s singleton null object; it is not the same as 0, False, or an empty string. See the Python documentation on built-in types.

Trace every route through the function
Read from the function’s definition and follow each possible route to its exit: conditions, loop exits, and exception-handling paths. If any route reaches the end of the function without executing a value-bearing return, that route produces None. The Python language reference specifies this behavior.
A branch falls through
A return in one branch does not supply a value for other branches. For example:

def label_for(score):
if score >= 50:

Give the remaining case a value if the function should produce one, or raise an exception if that input is invalid:

A bare return exits early
return with no expression is equivalent to return None. If the caller needs a result, include it:
def get_name(user):
if user is None:
return "Guest"
return user.name
A bare return is appropriate when the function is meant to stop early without producing a meaningful result. Python documents the rule in its return-statement reference.

Returning is different from printing or calling a helper
The function prints instead of returning
print() displays text; it does not make that text the function’s return value. If the caller needs to use the result, return it and print it separately:
def make_message(name):
return f"Hello, {name}!"
message = make_message("Sam")
print(message)
This separation lets callers store, transform, or display the result as needed. The Python tutorial illustrates the distinction between a function that prints output and one that returns a value.

A wrapper calls a helper but discards its result
Calling a helper does not automatically pass its result back to the wrapper’s caller. The wrapper needs its own return:
def get_total(items):
calculate_total(items) # The helper result is discarded.
def get_total(items):
return calculate_total(items)
Without the return, the wrapper may finish without returning a value, even if the helper calculated one. Use the second form when the wrapper’s caller needs the helper’s result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check try/finally for a return that overrides another
A return executed in a finally block determines the function’s result, even if the try block already returned a different value. For example:
def read_value():
try:
return 42
finally:
return None
Here the call returns None. Avoid returning from finally unless replacing the earlier result is intentional; use finally for cleanup instead. The Python reference on compound statements describes how returns from finally affect the result.
Decide whether the function should return a value
Not every function needs to produce a useful result. A function that performs an action—such as displaying a message—may be intended to return no meaningful value. By contrast, a value-producing function should return a result its caller can use. Choose the repair based on the function’s purpose:
Quick Recap
- Caller needs a result: return the value and ensure every relevant path supplies one.
- Function is for an action: printing or another side effect may be the purpose; do not treat the resulting
Noneas a failed calculation. - Input is invalid: raise an appropriate exception rather than silently allowing a missing result, if that matches the function’s contract.
A quick debugging checklist
- Find the function definition that the call actually invokes.
- Store the call result and inspect it with
print(repr(result)). - Trace each conditional branch, loop exit, and exception-handling route to the function’s end.
- Search for every
return; distinguishreturn expressionfrom a barereturn. - Check whether the function only prints, or calls a helper without returning its result.
- Inspect
try/finallyblocks for a return that replaces an earlier result.
