SOLID can help React code stay easier to change, but it is not a mandate to create more components, add interfaces everywhere, or use class inheritance. Treat its five principles as design heuristics: isolate responsibilities that change independently, provide extension points for real variation, preserve behavioral contracts, keep caller-facing props focused, and separate stable policy from replaceable details.

What SOLID means in a React codebase

SOLID originated in object-oriented design. Robert C. Martin’s brief definitions describe a class with one responsibility, software entities open to extension but closed to modification, replaceable subtypes, client-specific interfaces, and dependence on abstractions rather than concrete implementations (principles.design). In React, these ideas are more useful as questions about change and contracts than as instructions to reproduce object-oriented structures.

React components are UI pieces with their own logic and appearance; they can range from a button to an entire page (React Quick Start). A component therefore does not violate SRP just because it contains several lines of JSX, nor does splitting every element into a component automatically improve the design. The practical test is whether a likely change repeatedly forces edits to unrelated concerns.

Consider a user list. Its requirements might change independently: the endpoint or caching strategy changes, the date display format changes, or the row layout changes. A design could have a query hook that coordinates fetching, a formatter for dates, and a list component that renders supplied users. That separation is useful if those concerns actually evolve separately; it is overhead if each piece merely forwards data without clarifying ownership.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Single Responsibility: isolate independent reasons to change

SRP is often summarized as “one reason to change.” The source definition is about a single responsibility and changes to one part of a specification affecting that responsibility (principles.design). For React, think in terms of coherent ownership, not a rule that every component should perform exactly one tiny operation.

If UserList fetches records, transforms dates, manages an add-user form, and renders rows, changes to data access, formatting, form behavior, and display all converge in one module. If those requirements are maintained by different teams or change on different schedules, separate the concerns: for example, let useUsers coordinate a query, a formatter convert a date for display, and UserList render the resulting users.

React’s emphasis on local reasoning is relevant: “One important principle in React is local reasoning: the ability to understand what a component or hook does by looking at its code in isolation” (React documentation). A cohesive component or Hook makes that possible. The goal is not a low line count; it is a boundary whose purpose can be understood without tracing unrelated behavior elsewhere.

Open/Closed: extend only where variation is real

The Open/Closed Principle says software entities should be open to extension but closed to modification (principles.design). In application code, this is an aim to contain the impact of predictable new variants—not a ban on editing existing code.

Suppose a Card component accumulates branches such as if (kind === "profile"), if (kind === "notice"), and if (kind === "billing"), each with different content. If callers need to supply distinct content while the card’s frame remains stable, an extension point may help:

function Card({ children }) {
  return <section className="card">{children}</section>;
}

function ProfileCard({ user }) {
  return (
    <Card>
      <h2>{user.name}</h2>
      <p>{user.role}</p>
    </Card>
  );
}

This example uses composition: the card owns its frame, while a caller supplies content. Named slots, a renderer, or data-driven configuration may suit other cases. Choose the smallest API that supports the variation. If the card has one stable use and a new requirement genuinely changes its behavior, modifying it directly may be clearer than introducing an extension system. A useful extension point reduces the blast radius of likely changes without making every hypothetical future change a design constraint (Advanced JavaScript).

Liskov Substitution: preserve the behavioral contract

The Liskov Substitution Principle says instances of subtypes should be usable in place of their base types without changing program correctness (principles.design). React function components rarely need class inheritance to apply this idea. Ask instead whether a replacement component or adapter fulfills the role its caller expects.

For example, a custom PrimaryAction might replace a Button behind a shared interface. It should accept the promised inputs, invoke the action at the expected time, and retain the accessibility and interaction behavior callers rely on. A visually similar replacement that drops a disabled state or changes what an event callback means is not interchangeable in practice.

Composition and shared prop contracts are usually more natural than inheritance in React. A community example that extends a button class can illustrate the terminology, but it is not a recommendation to build React UIs through subclasses (afdezcl/react-solid).

Interface Segregation: give components the data they use

The Interface Segregation Principle favors several client-specific interfaces over one general-purpose interface (principles.design). For a React component, the analogous concern is avoiding a prop contract that makes callers provide unrelated data or behavior.

If UserAvatar needs only a display name and image URL, pass those values rather than a large user object that also contains permissions, billing details, and account settings:

type UserAvatarProps = {
  name: string;
  imageUrl: string;
};

function UserAvatar({ name, imageUrl }: UserAvatarProps) {
  return <img src={imageUrl} alt={name} />;
}

Narrow props make dependencies visible and keep the component contract focused. They do not mean every field needs its own wrapper object or that a convenient domain object must always be unpacked. Segregate the contract when callers otherwise depend on or supply information the component does not use; avoid adding plumbing that buys no meaningful independence.

Dependency Inversion: separate policy from replaceable details

The Dependency Inversion Principle says to depend on abstractions rather than concrete implementations (principles.design). In React, that can be as simple as a feature depending on a small function or object supplied at a boundary instead of constructing a particular transport client itself.

For example, a user-query hook that directly creates a REST client is tied to that implementation. If the feature has a genuine need to switch data sources or to substitute a test implementation, a repository contract can make the dependency explicit:

type UserRepository = {
  list(): Promise<User[]>;
};

function useUsers(repository: UserRepository) {
  // Coordinate the query using repository.list().
}

A composition boundary can provide the concrete repository used by the application; a test can provide another implementation. The contract need not be a framework or a formal interface—plain functions and objects can be enough. Dependency inversion describes the direction of source-level dependency; dependency injection is one way to supply an implementation. They are related, not synonymous. A community React example demonstrates repository injection into a hook, but it is an illustrative pattern rather than a universal React requirement (afdezcl/react-solid).

If the implementation is stable and there is no valuable variation, a direct import is often simpler. A seam earns its cost when it supports real alternatives, useful testing, or a meaningful ownership boundary—not merely because the principle has the word “dependency” in its name (Advanced JavaScript).

Apply SOLID without breaking React’s rules

SOLID does not override React’s rules for rendering and Hooks. React components and Hooks must be pure and idempotent for the same inputs; side effects belong outside render; props and state are immutable snapshots; components are called by React; and Hooks must be called at the top level of React functions (Rules of React, Components and Hooks must be pure).

  • Do not call a component function directly to render it. Use it as a JSX element so React can manage component behavior.
  • Do not call Hooks conditionally or pass them around as ordinary values. Call them at the top level of a component or custom Hook.
  • Do not mutate props or state directly. Treat them as snapshots and update state through React’s supported mechanisms.
  • Keep side effects out of render; use the appropriate event or effect mechanism for work that interacts with the outside world.

“Never mutate anything” is broader than React’s rule. Local mutation of a value created during render is allowed when it does not persist or cause an observable side effect; React’s documentation shows building a local array with push as an example (Components and Hooks must be pure). The important distinction is between a temporary local value and shared, persistent data such as props or state.

Common SOLID misconceptions in React

  • “SOLID means more components.” Split work when concerns have distinct reasons to change or a boundary improves local understanding. Fragmenting a stable, cohesive component can add indirection instead.
  • “Open/Closed means never edit working code.” Requirements change. Add extension points when they contain likely variation; otherwise a direct, localized edit may be the simpler design.
  • “Liskov means inheritance is the React way.” The key is substitutable behavior. Composition and compatible props are more relevant to function components than class hierarchies.
  • “Interface Segregation means the fewest possible props.” The aim is to avoid irrelevant dependencies, not to split every value into its own abstraction or create needless wrapper plumbing.
  • “Dependency Inversion means inject everything.” Direct imports are reasonable when a dependency is stable and no useful alternative is expected.
  • “SOLID is a pass/fail checklist.” The principles can trade off against abstraction and coordination costs. Judge whether a design makes plausible changes safer and easier.

A practical decision test for a proposed abstraction

Before extracting a component, adding a repository, or broadening an API, compare the current and proposed designs along four dimensions:

  • Change locality: For a plausible new requirement, how many modules need edits, and are those edits related?
  • API burden: How many props, callbacks, or contracts must each caller understand to use the new boundary?
  • Behavioral substitutability: Could an alternate component or implementation preserve the expected behavior and accessibility contract?
  • Abstraction cost: Does the seam serve real variation, testing needs, or an ownership boundary, or does it only add indirection?

There is no useful component-count target or universal abstraction threshold. The right design is the one that keeps the behavior understandable and makes the changes the code is likely to face less entangled.
