Use lambda for a short, clear, single-expression function that belongs inline—often a small callback such as a sort key. Use def when a function needs multiple steps, a useful name, annotations, reuse, or logic that is difficult to understand at the point of use.
What is the difference between lambda and def?
Both forms create function objects that you can call or pass to other functions as callbacks. The difference is how you define the function and what its body can contain: lambda is a compact expression, while def is a named function definition with a statement body.
| Decision factor | lambda |
def |
|---|---|---|
| Body | One expression; its value is returned. | A suite of statements; use return to return a value. |
| Name | An anonymous function expression. You can assign it to a variable, but that usually gives up the benefit of keeping a small function inline. | Binds the declared, readable name to the function. |
| Annotations | Lambda syntax does not support parameter or return annotations. | Supports parameter and return annotations. |
| Good fit | A brief callback whose purpose is obvious where it is used. | Reusable behavior, multiple steps, branching, exception handling, annotations, or behavior that benefits from a meaningful name. |
The Python language reference describes lambda as shorthand for a simplified function definition, and notes that def is more powerful because it allows multiple statements and annotations: lambda expressions and function definitions.
When should you use lambda?
Choose a lambda when the function is short enough that a reader can understand its purpose without leaving the call site. A common use is selecting a sort key:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
pairs = [(1, "one"), (2, "two"), (3, "three")]
pairs.sort(key=lambda pair: pair[1])
Here, the callback returns the second item in each pair, and the expression makes its role apparent. The Python tutorial demonstrates this inline-callback pattern and notes that lambda bodies are syntactically restricted to one expression: Lambda Expressions.
Another suitable case is a simple normalization key:

sorted(words, key=lambda word: word.lower())
In both examples, the function is used directly where its behavior is needed. If the expression starts to require awkward nesting or its purpose is not clear at a glance, prefer a named function.
When should you use def?
Use it for multiple steps or control flow
A def body can contain statements, so it is the natural choice when the operation involves cleanup, a condition, or other sequential logic:

def display_name(user):
cleaned = user.name.strip()
if not cleaned:
return "(unknown)"
return cleaned.title()
This cannot be written as a lambda body because the lambda syntax accepts one expression, not a sequence of statements.
Give a callback a name when that name explains its job
A named function makes a callback easier to recognize, discuss, and reuse:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
def sort_key(record):
return record.priority, record.created_at
records.sort(key=sort_key)
The function remains a callback: a function defined with def can be passed around just like a lambda. Its name also states what the key represents, and the function can be tested or reused independently.
Use it when annotations or documentation help
Choose def when parameter or return annotations will clarify how the function should be used, or when its logic merits a docstring and an independently reviewable definition. Lambda syntax does not provide annotations, and squeezing a longer explanation into an expression makes the code harder to inspect.

Should you assign a lambda to a variable?
Usually, no. If you find yourself writing normalized = lambda word: word.lower(), write a def normalized(word): function instead. The named definition communicates the function’s identity directly and avoids using anonymous-function syntax to create something that is meant to be a named function. This is a readability choice, not a claim about runtime speed.
Is lambda faster than def?
Do not choose between them on the assumption that one is universally faster. The official documentation cited here explains their syntax and readability trade-offs; it does not establish a universal performance advantage for either form. For ordinary code, make the choice based on clarity and the function’s needs.
A quick decision rule
- Keep it as a lambda if it is one simple expression, used inline, and clear at the call site.
- Use
defif it needs several steps, branching, annotations, a meaningful name, or reuse. - Replace the lambda if its expression becomes difficult to read or explain. A short named function is easier to inspect than a compact but tangled expression.
The Python Functional Programming HOWTO likewise cautions against overly complicated lambdas and illustrates replacing them with named functions: Small Functions and the Lambda Expression.
