Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If application logs are missing or late, investigate with independent evidence instead of waiting on that feed: check endpoint, identity, network, firewall, proxy, DNS, cloud-audit, and IDS/IPS records; preserve short-retention data; and correlate events into a qualified timeline. A missing log stream is a visibility gap, not proof that an attacker tampered with logs—or that exploitation succeeded.
Start with the evidence gap, not an assumption
Record the affected service, time interval, missing event types, and collection destination. Then locate where the gap occurs: event generation at the application, forwarding from the host, transport, collector, storage, parsing, or search. Check the source’s documented delivery behavior and retention window; there is no single delivery time that applies to every system.
Logging can stop for operational, configuration, capacity, or malicious reasons. OWASP recommends detecting when logging stops and cautions that event data may be missing or modified. Treat a stopped feed as an investigation concern, but do not label it attacker tampering without corroborating evidence. See the OWASP Logging Cheat Sheet.
Preserve evidence before it expires
Prioritize records that may disappear through rotation or buffer overwrite. Depending on your environment, these can include system memory, Windows Security events, endpoint records, firewall buffers, proxy records, cloud audit events, and relevant network captures. CISA emphasizes collecting evidence from perimeter, internal-network, and endpoint sources and maintaining a detailed record of what was collected.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Follow your organization’s evidence-handling process. Record the collection time, source, custodian, and any transformations, and protect originals from unauthorized changes or deletion. CISA identifies memory, Windows Security logs, and firewall buffers as potentially volatile or limited-retention evidence in its incident and vulnerability response playbooks and recommends preserving relevant records in its StopRansomware Guide.
Choose sources based on the suspected attack stage
No single alternate source reveals every part of an attack. Use the suspected technique and your architecture to decide what to examine; what you can see depends on what was collected and retained.

| Activity to investigate | Potentially useful sources | What they may show |
|---|---|---|
| Initial access or an internet-facing request | Email records, web or reverse-proxy logs, server application logs if available, firewall, load balancer, network traffic, and IDS/IPS | Requests, connection attempts, and alerts associated with the service. A perimeter record may show an attempt without proving that vulnerable code ran. |
| Execution or activity on a host | EDR or antimalware, operating-system and Windows event logs, Sysmon, process or script activity, and PowerShell records where collected | Processes, scripts, host events, or other activity that may corroborate execution or post-exploitation. |
| Command-and-control or possible data movement | DNS, firewall, proxy, flow or packet records, cloud activity, and IDS/IPS | Connections, name lookups, traffic patterns, and cloud actions. Network records may lack application-level outcomes, particularly when traffic is encrypted. |
| Account use or privilege changes | Identity-provider records, authentication events, operating-system audit logs, and cloud audit data | Logins, account changes, and actions that can help establish which identities or privileges were involved. |
This mapping follows the attack-stage examples in CISA’s incident response playbook. Endpoint and application-level records may offer process or user context, while network telemetry may expose connections and patterns; either can be absent, delayed, or incomplete in a particular deployment.
Build a timeline and scope the activity
Normalize times for comparison where possible, but retain original timestamps. Keep event time separate from ingestion or arrival time so a delayed feed is not mistaken for late activity. Note time zones, clock offsets, missing fields, retention limits, and confidence in each record.

Correlate using identifiers that are available, such as host, account, source and destination address, request ID, process, or cloud principal. Compare activity with normal behavior for the affected system, then look for related events on other assets and accounts. CISA recommends using available data to assess access type, affected assets, privileges reached, and operational or informational impact, and refining scope as evidence develops.
Distinguish an attempt from confirmed exploitation
Keep confirmed facts, indicators, hypotheses, and unknowns separate. A suspicious request or IDS/IPS alert can justify investigation, but neither automatically proves that the vulnerable code executed. A successful response from a service, a delayed log, or an absent application record does not by itself prove compromise—or safety.

Seek corroboration relevant to the suspected vulnerability: host artifacts, unusual child processes, persistence, identity or privilege changes, outbound connections, access to sensitive functions, or subsequent account and data activity. CISA and NIST offer general incident-investigation methods, not a universal threshold or signature that proves exploitation across every vulnerability and environment. See NIST SP 800-61 Rev. 2.

Once evidence is preserved and the incident process is underway, test the logging path end to end: event generation, source configuration, forwarding, collector health, storage capacity, parsing, searchability, access controls, and alerting. Centralize relevant records, alert on collection stoppage as well as high-risk activity, and retain records long enough to support delayed analysis and applicable policy.

CISA recommends maintaining and backing up logs for critical systems for a minimum of one year, if possible. This is operational guidance, not a universal legal requirement. For smaller organizations, CISA’s logging guidance points to Logging Made Easy, a no-cost tool for collecting, storing, and reviewing logs, and Malcolm, an open-source network traffic analysis tool with an OT/ICS focus. A collection platform can help correlate available telemetry, but it cannot recreate records that were never captured.
Review which security-relevant events the application records, including authentication and access-control failures, input-validation failures, administrative actions, and other high-risk behavior where appropriate. OWASP advises adding application context beyond ordinary web-server logs while excluding or masking credentials, session tokens, API keys, and sensitive personal data. Logs themselves can contain sensitive information, so restrict access and protect their integrity.
