Keep the component’s behavior and data flow intact as you work. React does not prescribe a component-size limit or a universal extraction recipe; the goal is clearer boundaries, not fewer lines.
What “single responsibility” means in a React component
The Single Responsibility Principle is useful here as a design heuristic, not a React rule. A component becomes difficult to understand and change when unrelated concerns—such as rendering a form, validating fields, transforming data, and synchronizing an external connection—are tangled together.
React’s guidance emphasizes composition, reusable logic, purity, and local reasoning: a component or Hook should be understandable by looking at its code. It does not define a mandatory responsibility count, component size, or extraction structure. Choose boundaries based on actual behavior and clarity, not a line-count target. See Importing and Exporting Components and Rules of React.
Map the component before changing it
First make a practical inventory. This is a review technique, not a React-prescribed checklist. Identify:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- The visible regions it renders, such as a form, status message, or results list.
- Its props and state, including which values each part reads or updates.
- Event handlers and the behavior they trigger.
- Data transformations such as filtering, formatting, or validation.
- Effects and the external systems they synchronize with.
Then note which pieces change for different reasons. A status region that changes independently from a form may be a useful UI boundary; a calculation that only formats a value may not need to be a component or Hook at all.
Choose the right extraction
Use a child component for a cohesive UI region
Extract a region when giving it a name, a clear set of inputs, and a focused rendering responsibility makes the parent easier to scan or the region easier to reuse. Keep its props focused on what it needs. React’s composition guidance describes components as building blocks for reusable interfaces, but there is no documented size threshold that says when a component must be split. See Importing and Exporting Components.

Render the child through JSX, for example <StatusPanel status={status} />. Do not invoke a component as an ordinary function, such as StatusPanel({ status }); React should control component rendering. See Component.
Use a custom Hook for coherent stateful logic
Extract logic into a custom Hook when it forms a useful stateful concern involving Hooks—often state and Effects—or when that logic is reused. Name the Hook for what it does, such as useOnlineStatus, rather than a lifecycle moment such as useMount. Each call to a custom Hook has its own state: Hooks share logic, not a single shared state instance. See Reusing Logic with Custom Hooks.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
A custom Hook is not simply a place to hide any block of code. If extracting it obscures ownership or creates needless prop plumbing, keep the logic near the component that uses it.
Use an ordinary function for pure calculations
Move formatting, filtering, and other calculations that do not need React state or Effects into regular functions. A name such as getColor makes clear that it is an ordinary calculation, not a Hook. This keeps React-specific stateful logic distinct from general JavaScript logic. See Reusing Logic with Custom Hooks.

Refactor in small, behavior-preserving steps
- Record the current behavior. Note the rendered regions, inputs, state updates, event responses, and external synchronization you intend to preserve.
- Name the responsibilities. Describe them in plain language, such as “render the form,” “validate fields,” or “synchronize the connection.” Tie each boundary to behavior rather than code length.
- Extract one cohesive boundary. Move a UI region to a child component, stateful logic to a custom Hook, or a pure calculation to an ordinary function. Avoid changing several unrelated behaviors in the same move.
- Check ownership and data flow. Confirm that each value still has a clear owner, the extracted unit receives the inputs it needs, and the parent-child interface remains understandable.
- Review the result before extracting more. Check the visible output, event behavior, and side effects against the original. Continue only where another boundary improves comprehension or reuse.
This sequence is a practical way to refactor, not a React-mandated test plan. React’s constraints that matter during the work are purity, immutable inputs, and correct Hook usage.

- Call Hooks only at the top level of function components or custom Hooks. Do not call them conditionally, in loops, or from ordinary JavaScript functions. See Rules of Hooks.
- Keep rendering pure and idempotent. A render should not perform side effects or mutate props and state. React may render components multiple times; run side effects outside render. See Components and Hooks must be pure.
- Do not add memoization merely because code moved.
useCallbackcaches a function definition as a performance optimization. Consider it for a specific optimization need, not as a responsibility-separation technique. See useCallback.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Responsibility clarity: Can you understand what each component or Hook does by reading it in isolation?
- Cohesion: Does the extracted UI belong together, or does the Hook encapsulate one useful stateful concern?
- Data flow: Are ownership and updates clear, without needless prop plumbing?
- Reuse: Is the logic genuinely reused or easier to reason about, rather than abstracted speculatively?
- Behavior preservation: Does rendering and synchronization still work as intended while respecting React’s rules?
These are practical comparison questions, not a formal React scoring system. If an extraction adds indirection without making behavior clearer, it may not be a useful boundary.
