Use Context to provide a stable service contract to a component subtree, and let a provider at the application boundary supply the concrete implementation. Components and custom Hooks can then depend on that contract rather than constructing API clients or other infrastructure themselves. React does not call this pattern “dependency inversion”; it is an architectural use of Context’s documented ability to pass values through a tree.

What dependency inversion means in a React app

Dependency inversion is an architectural choice: UI or use-case code relies on a stable contract, while an outer composition boundary supplies the concrete infrastructure. For example, a profile panel can ask for a profile service without knowing whether that service calls a production API, reads fixture data, or is a test fake.

React Context makes a value available to descendants without passing it through every intermediate component as props. A component reads and subscribes to that context with useContext. Using Context to provide services is a practical way to apply dependency inversion; it is not a React-mandated architecture. See React’s guide to passing data deeply with Context and its built-in Hooks reference.

Define a service contract and provide it with Context

Start by deciding what the UI needs to ask of the service, rather than exposing implementation details such as a particular HTTP client. A TypeScript interface can make the contract explicit; in JavaScript, a documented object shape works too. For instance, the UI might use profiles.get(id) and profiles.save(profile).

import { createContext, useContext } from 'react';

const ServicesContext = createContext(null);

export function ServicesProvider({ services, children }) {
  return (
    <ServicesContext value={services}>
      {children}
    </ServicesContext>
  );
}

export function useServices() {
  const services = useContext(ServicesContext);
  if (services === null) {
    throw new Error('useServices must be used within ServicesProvider');
  }
  return services;
}

function ProfilePanel() {
  const { profiles } = useServices();
  // Render UI using the supplied profile service.
}

The example uses the current React documentation’s form of rendering the Context itself as a provider. For React versions that require the older form, write <ServicesContext.Provider value={services}>. Check the project’s installed React version before adopting the syntax. The official documentation establishes the Context and Hook mechanics; this service shape is an example, not a prescribed React API.

Compose the concrete implementation outside the consumer

Create or select the production service near the application boundary, then pass it to the provider. The panel receives the capability through Context and does not need to import or instantiate the network adapter. This keeps the wiring visible in one place and makes it possible to supply a different implementation to a different subtree.

Keep business rules in ordinary functions where practical. Components can translate UI events into service calls and render the resulting state; adapters can handle network or browser-specific details behind the contract. This separation is design guidance, not a React requirement.

Choose between props, Context, and a library

Option Useful when Trade-offs
Props A dependency is local or only a few components need it. The dependency flow is explicit and easy to substitute locally; distant descendants may require intermediate components to forward the prop.
Context Many descendants need the same capability within a defined subtree. A provider can replace the value for that subtree, but the dependency is less visible at each consumer’s call site, and consumers subscribe to the provider value.
Dedicated state or dependency-injection library The application needs conventions or capabilities beyond what its own Context setup provides. It adds an external dependency and its own learning and maintenance cost. There is no universally best library established by the React documentation reviewed here.

A practical starting point is props for local dependencies and Context for capabilities shared across many descendants. Use separate contexts or provider values when that makes ownership and update behavior clearer. Avoid turning a single global container into an undocumented service locator.

Use Hooks without breaking the Rules of React

A custom Hook can package React-specific state or subscriptions and read the service Context. Call Hooks only at the top level of a React component or another custom Hook; do not call them conditionally, in loops, or as ordinary values. In particular, do not pass a Hook function as a prop for another component to invoke dynamically. Inject a plain service or configuration value instead, then call any needed custom Hook statically in the component. React explains these constraints in React calls Components and Hooks and its Rules of React.

React also requires components and Hooks to remain pure: the same inputs should produce the same render result, side effects belong outside render, and props, state, Hook arguments, and return values should be treated as immutable. See Components and Hooks must be pure.

Use Effects for external synchronization, not ordinary data flow

useEffect is for connecting to and synchronizing with an external system, such as a network connection, browser API, or third-party widget; clean up the connection when appropriate. Do not add an Effect just to shuttle ordinary application data between layers or orchestrate a service call that can be handled directly by the relevant event or data-flow logic. React’s useEffect reference puts it plainly: “If you’re not interacting with an external system, you probably don’t need an Effect.”

Keep Context values and subscriptions deliberate

Context distributes a value; it does not supply a complete state-management architecture. Decide what belongs in each value and what should trigger consumers to update. Narrowly scoped values and clearly owned providers can make dependencies easier to reason about. React documents that consumers subscribe to Context values, but does not set a universal performance threshold or prescribe how many services should share a context. Treat those decisions as application-specific rather than as rules guaranteed by React.

Test or preview with a substitute service

Because the provider accepts a service object, a test or preview can mount the relevant subtree with a fake that implements the same contract. A fake can return predictable data or record a save request, letting the test focus on the UI’s behavior without requiring the production API adapter. This is a technique enabled by the boundary—not a guarantee that Context by itself makes tests easy. Keep the fake’s behavior aligned with the contract that production consumers rely on.
