To keep AI memory private, limit what you share, review and disable the service’s memory controls when you do not want personalization, and delete both saved memories and the conversations or files they came from. Treat memory, chat history, model training, and retention as separate settings: changing one does not necessarily change the others. For organizations, consumer privacy toggles are not a substitute for securing the databases, retrieval systems, and tools that store or use memory.
What “AI memory” can mean—and what turning it off does
AI memory is not always a single list of facts. Depending on the service and feature, an assistant may use saved preferences, previous chats, uploaded files, custom instructions, connected apps, or other context. The available sources and controls vary by product, account type, region, plan, platform, and workspace.
Keep four questions separate when you check privacy settings:
- Memory or personalization: Can the assistant carry information forward or use existing information to personalize replies?
- Chat history: Are conversations still saved in your account?
- Model improvement: May the provider use eligible conversations to improve or train models?
- Retention: How long can the provider keep data, including for safety, operations, or legal reasons?
For example, OpenAI says turning off ChatGPT’s “Improve the model for everyone” setting stops new conversations from being used to train its models, but those conversations can remain in chat history. Turning off Memory does not itself delete saved memories or chats. Check the current terms for the exact product and account you use; “private,” “temporary,” “memory off,” “not used for training,” and “zero data retention” are not interchangeable promises. OpenAI’s ChatGPT data-controls documentation and Memory documentation describe the distinctions for ChatGPT.

How to reduce what an assistant remembers
Share only what the task needs
Before entering information, ask whether the assistant needs the identifying detail or whether a generalized version will work. Do not put passwords, one-time authentication codes, recovery phrases, or other secrets in a conversation or persistent memory. Use particular care with confidential workplace information, medical or financial details, and information about other people; follow your organization’s rules for approved AI tools.
Review personalization settings and sources
In ChatGPT, the documented path is Settings > Personalization > Memory. The exact controls can depend on plan, region, platform, and workspace. Review the memory information the service exposes, and check whether files, custom instructions, connected apps, or past conversations can provide context. OpenAI notes that its displayed memory summary may not include every detail or source the service could reference, so do not treat the summary as a complete inventory.

Disable the specific feature you do not want
Turn off the relevant memory or history-reference control if you do not want the assistant to use that feature. This changes future behavior according to the service’s stated setting; it does not necessarily erase existing memories, conversations, files, or provider-held records. If your concern is model training, check that control separately.
Choose temporary or private chats deliberately
Read what a service’s temporary or private mode actually changes before using it. In ChatGPT, select whether Temporary Chat should be personalized at the start of the conversation: an unpersonalized Temporary Chat avoids using existing memory, while a personalized one may use existing memories. Either way, OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not create or update memories. Temporary Chats are not used to improve models while temporary, but saving one converts it to a regular chat subject to account settings. OpenAI may retain Temporary Chats for up to 30 days for safety. OpenAI’s data-controls documentation explains these conditions.

How to delete information an AI already remembers
Deletion can require removing more than one copy. In ChatGPT, saved memories are stored separately from chat history. If you want information removed, check every place it could exist:
- Saved memory or personalization records
- The conversation where you shared the information, including archived conversations
- Uploaded files, library items, project files, or custom-assistant files
- Connected apps or other linked services that supplied the information
Remove the saved memory and the source conversation separately where applicable; deleting a chat alone may not delete a separate saved memory. Also remove the information from relevant files or connected services. OpenAI says memory changes can take time to propagate and that logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. These details apply to ChatGPT’s documented controls, not every provider. OpenAI’s Memory documentation describes the deletion steps and limits.

| Product and scope | What the cited documentation says | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Memory, chat history, and model-improvement controls are distinct. Saved memories are stored separately from chats; deleting information may require removing both the memory and its source, plus relevant files or connected-app data. Temporary Chats may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. | Controls vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace. Memory documentation; data-controls documentation. |
| Claude consumer products | Anthropic’s consumer retention page dated July 1, 2026 says deleted conversations disappear from chat history immediately and are deleted from backend storage within 30 days. If a user allows chats or coding sessions to improve Claude, applicable new or resumed chats may be retained in de-identified form in model-training pipelines for up to five years. | The page covers consumer products and directs commercial-product and API users to separate information. Anthropic Privacy Center. |
| Gemini Developer API | Google’s documentation, last updated September 14, 2026, says paid services do not use prompts and responses to improve products. Search and Maps grounding stores prompts, context, and output for 30 days; Interactions API state storage must be disabled with store: false; Live API session state can persist up to 24 hours when session resumption is configured; File API uploads remain until deleted or expired; explicit caches follow their configured time to live. |
These statements concern the Gemini Developer API, not all Gemini consumer experiences. Google says customers needing guaranteed zero retention or enterprise data-processing agreements should use Vertex AI. Google’s Gemini Developer API retention documentation. |
Can an AI agent’s memory be hacked or poisoned?
Yes. Persistent memory can become a security boundary: an attacker may try to add malicious or false information that affects later sessions, or exploit an agent’s access to retrieve and expose data. OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet defines “Memory Poisoning” as “Malicious data persisted in agent memory to influence future sessions or other users.” It also identifies risks such as prompt injection, tool abuse, data exfiltration, excessive autonomy, and sensitive-data exposure. OWASP AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet.
For an organization buying or building an AI memory system, ask how it handles these controls:
- User and tenant separation: Can one user retrieve another user’s long-term memory or inject false records into it?
- Storage authentication and permissions: Are vector databases, caches, and other external stores authenticated, with least-privilege access to production data?
- Untrusted content: How are retrieved documents and user-supplied data screened so they cannot silently become trusted instructions or persistent facts?
- Sensitive information: Are internal knowledge stores checked for leakage of sensitive data when they are supplied as model context?
- Deletion and retention: Does deletion propagate to embeddings, caches, logs, and backups, and how long do those copies persist?
- Oversight: Are memory reads and writes auditable, and are there incident controls for unauthorized access or malicious records?
These questions reflect safeguards in the OWASP LLM Verification Standard v2.0. They are buyer and engineering checks, not a certification of any particular product. A prompt telling an agent to keep data private is not a replacement for enforcing tenant boundaries and permissions in the storage and tool layers.
How to check whether conversations are used to train models
Find the setting or policy for the specific service, account type, and feature, then distinguish model improvement from memory and retention. For ChatGPT, “Improve the model for everyone” controls whether new conversations are used to train OpenAI models; it does not remove chats from history. For Claude, the cited consumer retention page explains what may happen if the user allows chats or coding sessions to improve Claude. For Google, the cited Gemini Developer API page says paid API services do not use prompts and responses to improve products, while separately documenting feature-specific storage. None of these product-specific statements should be generalized to a different provider product, managed account, API tier, or consumer experience.
