Let the cookware cool, soak it in warm soapy water, then loosen the residue gently with a soft sponge or nylon brush. For food that will not lift, use the baking-soda method recommended by your cookware’s manufacturer; the amounts and heating times differ by brand. Never pour cold water into a hot enameled pot, and avoid metal scrubbers.

Start with cooling and a warm, soapy soak

  1. Let the pot cool. Do not pour cold water into or over hot cookware. A sudden temperature change can damage the enamel. Le Creuset and STAUB’s maintenance instructions both caution against thermal shock.
  2. Soak the stuck food. Add warm water and dish soap and leave it to loosen. Le Creuset suggests about 15–20 minutes; STAUB advises soaking stuck food and says an overnight soak can be used if needed. These are maker-specific suggestions, not a single required soak time. Le Creuset’s cleaning guidance and STAUB’s instructions explain their approaches.
  3. Try lifting the softened residue. Use dish soap and a soft sponge, soft brush, or suitable nylon tool. Work gently rather than scraping hard at the enamel.

For stubborn burnt-on food, use the cookware maker’s baking-soda method

If soaking does not free the residue, follow the directions for your cookware brand. The manufacturers give different quantities and timings, so do not treat these recipes as interchangeable universal ratios.

Manufacturer Published method Source
Le Creuset Add one or two tablespoons of baking soda to warm water and simmer for about 8–10 minutes. Le Creuset cleaning guidance
Lodge Boil two cups of water with four tablespoons of baking soda for a few minutes. Lodge Enamelled Cast Iron Use and Care
STAUB Soak in boiling water with two or three spoonfuls of baking soda for a few minutes. STAUB maintenance instructions

After using a heated-water method, let the pot and liquid cool before draining. Gently wash away the loosened food with dish soap and a soft sponge, soft brush, or suitable nylon tool. Rinse and dry it thoroughly.

Choose tools that will not scratch the enamel

Use a soft sponge or brush, or a nylon cleaning tool suitable for cookware. Le Creuset allows nylon or soft pads or brushes for stubborn residue. STAUB warns against metal brushes and scouring pads. Avoid hard scraping and harsh abrasive cleaners; do not use a metal scouring pad to force off food. See Le Creuset Canada’s care guidance and STAUB’s maintenance instructions.

Tell leftover stains apart from remaining food

Once the burnt food is gone, discoloration may remain. Lodge says stains are expected on enameled cookware and do not affect performance. Its care guidance names Lodge Enamel Cleaner or another ceramic cleaner used according to its directions for slight stains. Le Creuset recommends its Cast Iron Cookware Cleaner for tough stains, oil residue, and marks, and also mentions Bar Keepers Friend or a baking-soda-and-water paste. These are manufacturer-specific suggestions: check your cookware’s own care instructions before using a cleaner, rather than assuming a product approved by one brand is right for every enamel finish. Rinse, dry, and store it fully dry

Rinse away soap and cleaning residue, then dry the pot completely, including around the rim, before storing it. Le Creuset cautions against storing cookware while damp. Lodge notes that moisture or inadequate rim drying can lead to rust deposits around the rim. Le Creuset Canada; Lodge.

Reduce the chance of food burning on again

Use low or medium heat and heat the cookware gradually. Le Creuset says overheating is a common reason food sticks and links high heat with sticky oil or fat residue. Its Canadian care page also notes that cast iron retains heat efficiently, so excessive heat can burn or stick food. Le Creuset cleaning guidance; Le Creuset Canada care guidance.
