A crash at startup, a crash while loading or playing, and errors limited to one map or addon call for different checks. Verify the game files first, then test content and addons in a way you can undo.
Identify the symptom before changing anything
Note when the problem occurs and how widely it affects the game. Does Garry’s Mod crash before the menu, during loading, or only after joining a particular server? Do the missing assets appear on every map or only one? Does the issue happen in single-player as well as multiplayer, and did it begin after an addon or game update? Those details help distinguish a local game problem from a map, server, or addon dependency.
- Purple-and-black checkerboard: a texture is missing for an object or part of a map. The Garry’s Mod Wiki FAQ explains that this pattern indicates a missing texture.
- Large red ERROR sign: a model is missing. As the Garry’s Mod Wiki FAQ puts it, “The big red error signs are the Source Engine’s way of telling you that you are missing a game model.”
- Crash or script error after adding content: an addon may be broken, incompatible, or conflicting with another addon. Addons can add or change game content, so the newest addition is a sensible first suspect (Facepunch: Addon Creation).
Checkerboards and ERROR signs can both result from damaged or incomplete game files, a failed addon download, or content that a particular map or server expects but your game does not have. The symptom alone does not identify which cause applies.
Verify Garry’s Mod files in Steam
File verification is a supported first repair for missing content and some crashes. Steam checks the installation and may redownload files that are missing or damaged (Steam Support: Verify Integrity of Game Files).

- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Garry’s Mod and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and let Steam finish the check.
Steam notes that a few local configuration files may normally fail verification. That message by itself does not mean the repair failed; do not keep repeating verification solely because those files are reported.
When textures or models are missing, check the map’s content
If verification does not restore the asset, consider whether the problem is limited to one map or server. A map or server may use content from an addon or a mountable game that is not installed or mounted on your system. Facepunch’s FAQ lists missing mountable games as one possible cause of checkerboards and ERROR models, and its Mounting Content guide explains how mounted content works.
- If assets are missing only on one map or server, check that map or server’s stated content requirements rather than assuming the whole Garry’s Mod installation is broken.
- If the required content belongs to a game you already own, verify that game’s files and check the relevant mount configuration.
- If an addon reports that content is absent, check whether the required game content is mounted. Facepunch notes that an incorrect or missing mount configuration can make addons report missing content.
Only obtain additional game content if the particular map or server identifies it as a dependency; an unrelated purchase will not fix a missing asset.

Test whether an addon is causing crashes or errors
Begin with the least disruptive test: disable the addon installed most recently and check whether the problem returns. Facepunch’s Crash Reporting guidance recommends addon isolation when investigating crashes.
Disable an addon from the menu
Open Garry’s Mod, select Addons, then disable the suspect addon. The menu can also be used to enable or uninstall addons; see Facepunch: Addons Usage for the documented addon controls.
Run a temporary clean test
If disabling one addon does not settle the question, temporarily launch with -noworkshop -noaddons. In Steam, open Library, right-click Garry’s Mod, choose Properties, and enter both options in Launch Options. Facepunch defines -noworkshop as disabling Workshop addons and -noaddons as disabling addons loaded from addon folders (Facepunch: Command Line Parameters).

Try to reproduce the same crash or visual error. If it disappears during this clean test, addons are implicated, but that does not prove which one is responsible. Remove the launch options after the test, then re-enable addons individually or in small groups until the problem returns. Report an addon-specific fault to its author with the exact console error and steps that reproduce it.
If Garry’s Mod crashes at startup
A silent crash before the game opens can be driver-related, according to Facepunch’s crash guidance. Steam’s general launch troubleshooting also recommends restarting the computer, updating the operating system and graphics drivers, verifying files, disabling nonessential background software, and checking system requirements (Steam Support: Games do not run after ‘Preparing to Launch’).

- Check for operating-system updates and graphics-driver updates. Get graphics drivers from the official site or support application of your hardware vendor.
- Verify Garry’s Mod files using the Steam steps above.
- Temporarily close nonessential overlays or background software that might interfere with launching, then test again.
- Compare your system with Steam’s published Garry’s Mod system requirements.
Make one change at a time and test after each one. That makes it easier to identify a change that helped—or restore the previous setup if it did not.

If the crash happens while loading or playing
For some crashes involving mods or servers that use substantial video memory, Facepunch suggests reducing Texture Detail in the game’s Advanced Video Options (Facepunch Support: Common start up Problems and Solutions). Change the setting, then retry the same map or server; this is a diagnostic adjustment, not proof that video memory caused the crash.
Steam lists the following requirements for Garry’s Mod on its technical issue page, accessed in 2026. Use them as a baseline comparison, not as a guarantee that a system meeting them will avoid crashes.

Send a useful crash report if the problem persists
A report is more actionable when it makes the failure reproducible and shows whether it depends on a map, server, or addon. Facepunch’s Crash Reporting guide describes dump files and platform-specific reporting directions.
- Describe what you were doing immediately before the crash and list the steps that reproduce it.
- Name the map and server, if applicable, and say whether the fault occurs on other maps, in single-player, or in multiplayer.
- State whether the problem still happens with addons disabled using the clean-test launch options.
- Include the relevant console error and the platform-appropriate crash dump or log. Facepunch identifies
.mdmpdumps on Windows and.dmpdumps on x86-64 branches; follow its guide for Linux or macOS directions.
If the checks above do not resolve the issue, use Facepunch’s official support or bug-reporting channels and include those details rather than reporting only that the game “crashes.”
