Use a dedicated circuit drawer when you want a diagram generated from an existing quantum-circuit object, with circuit-aware features such as wire ordering, barriers, measurements, and folding. Use Matplotlib directly when you need to compose a bespoke illustration or integrate circuit-like graphics with plots and other annotations. The options can also work together: Qiskit’s circuit drawer includes a Matplotlib renderer.
What is the difference?
Matplotlib is a general plotting library. Its Figure, Axes, and Artist model provides building blocks such as lines, text, and shapes; when drawing a circuit directly with those primitives, you must also decide how to represent and lay out circuit-specific elements. A dedicated circuit drawer starts with circuit concepts, and can render a framework circuit object using its structure and supported layout controls.
“Dedicated” does not necessarily mean “separate from Matplotlib.” Qiskit’s drawer can return a Matplotlib rendering and can work with a Matplotlib Axes, letting circuit-aware output sit inside a larger figure.
Which workflow fits your diagram?
| Need | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Render a circuit that already exists as a Qiskit QuantumCircuit | Qiskit circuit drawer | It accepts a circuit object and exposes circuit-oriented controls such as wire ordering, barriers, bit reversal, folding, and styling. See the Qiskit circuit_drawer API. |
| Build a highly customized circuit-like illustration or combine it with plots and annotations | Matplotlib directly, or Qiskit’s Matplotlib renderer within a custom figure | Matplotlib’s Figure, Axes, and Artist system provides general-purpose drawing primitives; Qiskit’s Matplotlib output can accept an Axes. See the Matplotlib Artist tutorial and the Qiskit API. |
| Control diagram layout in a LaTeX manuscript as source | Quantikz or Qiskit LaTeX output | Quantikz is a LaTeX package for typesetting quantum-circuit diagrams. Qiskit also offers compiled LaTeX output and raw LaTeX source. See the Quantikz tutorial and the Qiskit API. |
When Matplotlib is the better choice
Choose direct Matplotlib when the circuit is part of a broader graphic rather than simply a rendering of a circuit object. It is a natural fit if you need custom graphical conventions, precise placement alongside data plots, or elements that your circuit drawer does not provide. You gain broad control over the figure, but you also take responsibility for mapping circuit structure to visual elements and keeping the diagram legible.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Matplotlib’s static backends include PNG, PDF, PostScript (PS), SVG, and PGF, according to its backend documentation. PDF and SVG preserve vector drawing instructions for scalable output, though the result depends on the content and backend. Select the format based on how the figure will be published and the output path your environment supports.
When a dedicated circuit drawer is the better choice
Start with a dedicated drawer when your source is already a framework circuit and you want the drawing to reflect its circuit structure without manually constructing every wire and gate. Qiskit’s circuit_drawer API documents controls for output type, style, folding, bit reversal, wire order, barriers, and wire compression.

Qiskit’s visualization guide covers both a circuit method and the standalone drawer function: Visualize circuits. Check the API reference for the Qiskit version installed in your environment; the “latest” documentation can change, and exact behavior is version-sensitive.
Choose the renderer that matches the destination
output="mpl": use when you want a Matplotlib figure, including as a component in a larger figure.output="latex": use when you want Qiskit to produce a LaTeX-rendered diagram.output="latex_source": use when you need the generated LaTeX source for further editing.- Text output: useful when a text-based rendering is more appropriate than a graphical figure.
The available renderer names are documented in the Qiskit API reference. Its LaTeX drawer invokes an installed system pdflatex on instruction labels; use that rendering only with trusted labels and a suitable LaTeX toolchain.

When to author the diagram in LaTeX
If the manuscript itself is written in LaTeX and you want direct control over diagram source, consider Quantikz or Qiskit’s raw LaTeX output. Quantikz is described as a package for typesetting quantum-circuit diagrams in its 2019 tutorial. This is a workflow choice: the available evidence does not establish that Quantikz universally supersedes QCircuit or another LaTeX option.

A practical decision checklist
- Does a circuit already exist as a framework object? If yes, begin with that framework’s drawer.
- Must the diagram show circuit semantics such as gates, measurements, barriers, or a particular wire order? Prefer a circuit-aware renderer with the needed controls.
- Must the circuit sit inside a custom plot or illustration? Use Matplotlib directly or place the circuit drawer’s Matplotlib output on an Axes.
- Is the diagram authored and edited as part of a LaTeX manuscript? Consider Quantikz or raw LaTeX source.
- Which file format does the publication need? Select the renderer and backend for that format, and check its local dependencies.
