For ordinary Steam Frame use, Valve’s published information establishes no extra accessory as necessary. The headset has integrated speakers and inside-out tracking, includes a wireless adapter, and has a modular headstrap. Add-ons make sense only for a particular need—such as prescription correction, a fit issue, color passthrough, or spatial-video capture.
What comes with Steam Frame?
Valve’s Steam Frame product page describes a wireless headset with integrated speakers, inside-out headset and controller tracking, a modular headstrap, and an included plug-and-play 6 GHz wireless adapter. The headset has a rechargeable battery and charges over USB-C. The product page says no setup is required.
The included adapter provides a dedicated link for VR and non-VR streaming. Valve describes two radios: one dedicated to streaming audio and visuals, and another for Wi-Fi. The cited product information does not establish a requirement to buy a separate streaming dongle or router for ordinary use.
Steam Frame’s controllers each use one AA battery. Valve estimates approximately 40 hours of play time per controller; this is Valve’s estimate, not an independent test. The product page does not say whether AA batteries are included, so check the package details rather than assuming they are.

Which accessories might be worth buying?
| Your need | Accessory to consider | What is established | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prescription correction | Prescription Inserts by Zenni | Valve names Zenni prescription inserts as compatible on its Steam Frame page. | Consider them if you want custom corrective lenses. Confirm prescription requirements, fit, ordering, and return terms with Zenni before purchasing; those details are not established by Valve’s listing. |
| Color passthrough, mixed-reality use, or spatial-video capture | Arcturus Vision Camera | Valve lists the camera as compatible. Arcturus says it uses the headset’s front expansion port and enables color passthrough and spatial-video recording. Its product page lists two 32-megapixel RGB sensors, 5K capture up to 60 fps or 2.5K up to 120 fps, and a weight under 10 g. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. | It is a capability upgrade, not a prerequisite for ordinary VR. Buy only if you have a use for the added camera functions. |
| A specific comfort or fit problem | Steam Frame Ergonomic Accessories Kit | Valve confirms a kit exists in its Steam Frame Ergonomic Accessories Kit listing, but the accessible listing does not itemize its contents or explain what fit issues it addresses. | Check the current listing for exact contents and compatibility with your concern before buying. Do not assume it includes a particular cushion or strap. |
| Keeping play going when a controller battery runs out | Spare AA batteries | Valve specifies one AA battery per controller and estimates about 40 hours of play time per controller. | A spare may be convenient. The cited information does not establish that the controllers’ batteries are rechargeable or that batteries are included. |
Do you need prescription inserts?
Not as a universal purchase. Valve’s compatibility listing establishes that Zenni prescription inserts are an option, but whether they are useful depends on your vision and how you prefer to use the headset. If you need corrective lenses in VR, compare the insert’s prescription and fit requirements with your needs before ordering. Valve’s listing does not provide Zenni’s ordering or return terms.
Is the Arcturus Vision Camera worth it?
Only if you want what it adds. Arcturus describes the front expansion-port camera as enabling color passthrough and spatial-video capture. Those are distinct from the headset’s ordinary VR functions, which Valve describes alongside its built-in tracking and audio. The listed sensor, recording, and weight figures are Arcturus’s specifications; they do not by themselves establish real-world image quality or whether the camera suits a particular workflow.

Do you need a separate tracker, headset audio, or streaming adapter?
Valve’s published Steam Frame information does not establish a general need for any of those purchases. It describes inside-out camera tracking, integrated speakers, and an included wireless adapter. That is a reason not to carry over assumptions from older PC VR setups that rely on external base stations or require a separate streaming adapter. This guidance is limited to the needs documented on Valve’s product page; a specific setup or networking problem may call for a different solution.
