Validate AI-generated embedded code with the same evidence-based gates as any other change: define expected behavior independently, review the patch, run static checks and layered tests, exercise relevant behavior on representative target hardware, and record results against the exact source revision and build. A passing test suite increases confidence only for the conditions it covers; it does not prove the code correct in every possible condition.

Can you trust AI-generated embedded code?

Not on authorship alone. Treat generated code as an unverified engineering change. Its explanation, accompanying tests, or apparent plausibility cannot establish correctness; the review and validation evidence must do that.

A key challenge is deciding what the correct result should be. ISO/IEC TR 29119-11:2020 identifies this as the test-oracle problem: testers may find it difficult to determine expected results and therefore whether tests passed. Define expected behavior from requirements, interface contracts, or independently established safety and security properties before evaluating the code. See the ISO/IEC TR 29119-11:2020 overview.

This guidance is about conventional software code produced or modified with generative AI. It does not validate an AI component running inside the device, assign a product’s regulatory classification, or establish certification compliance. Safety-related products need the applicable domain standard and jurisdiction identified; general AI-testing guidance does not replace domain-specific safety engineering.

How to validate AI-generated code: a repeatable sequence

1. Record the change and its origin

Keep the generated patch and, where policy permits, the prompt or context needed for traceability, model or tool version, human edits, reviewer, source revision, and resulting build identifier. Follow your organization’s rules for approved AI tools and data classifications: do not submit secrets or restricted design information to an unapproved service. OWASP AISVS Appendix C recommends documenting an AI-assisted workflow, including approved tools and prohibited use cases; it is guidance rather than an embedded-safety standard. Consult the OWASP AI Security Verification Standard.

2. Establish expected behavior independently

Before writing or accepting tests, identify the relevant requirements and contracts. Include normal inputs, boundary values, invalid inputs, error behavior, concurrency assumptions, timing budgets, resource limits, and applicable safety or security properties. If an expectation is ambiguous, resolve it with the product owner or system engineer. Do not use the generated code’s explanation as its own test oracle.

3. Review the patch in its full context

A qualified engineer should inspect not just the new lines but their interactions with the surrounding firmware, configuration, interfaces, and dependencies. Pay particular attention to integer widths and conversions, memory ownership and lifetime, concurrency and interrupt interactions, error handling, hardware-register access, assumptions about build options, and dependency changes. OWASP AISVS Appendix C recommends qualified human review of AI-assisted code.

4. Run static checks

Compile with warnings handled according to project policy, apply the project’s language and coding rules, and run static analysis and source-quality checks. Review dependency and security findings as well. ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-1:2022 includes reviews and static analysis among testing concepts; ISO/IEC 5055:2021 describes automated source-code quality measures for violations of architectural and coding practices and notes that its scope was extended to embedded software and IoT. See the ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-1:2022 overview and ISO/IEC 5055:2021 overview.

Static checks can reveal defects without executing firmware, but a clean scan does not establish runtime correctness. Likewise, passing unit tests alone is not a complete validation argument.

5. Test at multiple levels

Choose test levels from the behavior and risks being changed. ISO/IEC TS 42119-2:2025 describes a risk-based application of software testing practices to AI systems and their components; it is useful context for selecting testing effort, not a substitute for the product’s requirements. Its official overview describes its scope.

  • Property-based or differential tests: use these when a trustworthy independent reference or invariant exists. For security-critical behavior, OWASP AISVS Appendix C specifically recommends differential fuzzing or property-based testing.
  • Fuzzing: target parsers and protocol inputs where malformed or unexpected data is a relevant risk.

ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-1:2022 distinguishes static and dynamic testing and recognizes embedded, real-time, regulated, and safety-related contexts. The standard’s overview provides the general testing context; the product’s own requirements determine which tests are necessary.

6. Exercise relevant behavior on target hardware

Run representative tests on the actual MCU or SoC, or on an equivalent environment whose limitations and differences are justified. Select target checks according to the change: timing and interrupt behavior, peripheral interactions, memory and flash constraints, watchdog and reset paths, and fault handling may matter. Host simulation or an emulator can make tests faster and repeatable, but it cannot by itself establish behavior that depends on real timing, peripherals, or target resource constraints.

The exact hardware plan is product-specific. Embedded testing guidance recognizes that test levels and environments must be selected for the system; it does not prescribe a universal board, coverage target, or hardware-in-the-loop setup. ISO/IEC TR 29119-11:2020 discusses test environments and lifecycle testing in the context of AI-based systems; it is guidance, not a replacement for the device’s domain requirements.

Choose validation evidence by the risk it addresses

No single test type answers every question. Use this comparison to identify gaps in the evidence for a particular change; it is not a ranking of vendors, boards, or frameworks.

Approach Evidence it provides Useful for What it does not establish alone
Human review Source inspection in the context of interfaces, design, and requirements Assumptions, unsafe patterns, interface changes, ownership, concurrency, and error handling That runtime behavior is correct across inputs, timing conditions, or hardware interactions
Static analysis and source-quality checks Findings from source and configured rules without executing firmware Coding-rule violations and other detectable structural or quality issues Correct behavior at runtime or the absence of all defects
Host-based unit and integration tests Executable behavior under the host test environment Functional cases and repeatable boundary or interface checks Target timing, peripherals, or resource behavior not represented by that environment
Fuzz, property-based, or differential tests Behavior across generated inputs, properties, or comparison with a reference Input robustness and security-critical behavior when a trustworthy oracle exists Correctness beyond the tested inputs, properties, and reference assumptions
Target or hardware-in-the-loop tests Behavior in a representative target and peripheral environment Hardware interaction, timing, resource limits, resets, and fault responses selected for the product All possible field conditions or a complete safety case
System validation End-to-end behavior against product-level requirements in a chosen environment Integrated product behavior and acceptance criteria Requirements that were omitted, ambiguous, or not exercised

When planning the evidence, ask whether the test oracle is independent of the generated implementation, whether the environment is realistic for the fault class, whether results can be repeated, and whether the assurance process matches the product’s applicable safety, security, or regulatory lifecycle.

What standards do—and do not—settle

ISO/IEC TR 29119-11:2020 addresses testing AI-based systems and highlights the difficulty of determining expected results. ISO/IEC TS 42119-2:2025 sets out a risk-based application of software testing practices to AI systems and components. ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-1:2022 provides general testing concepts, while ISO/IEC 5055:2021 addresses automated source-code quality measures. Together, they support a layered approach; they do not certify a particular generated patch or prescribe one universal embedded validation checklist.

Standards work can change status. ISO/IEC TS 42119-3 was listed as under publication when accessed, and ISO/IEC AWI 26044 as an approved work item under development. Those are signals of emerging work, not settled mandatory requirements; check the relevant standards body for current status before relying on either. They do not replace domain-specific rules that apply to a safety-related product.
