There is no fixed amount of memory or disk space used by a Linux container in WSL. Usage depends on the image, running processes, workload, writable data, mounted volumes, and any limits you configure. To get a useful answer for your setup, measure Docker’s object storage and the WSL filesystem separately—and distinguish the WSL virtual machine’s settings from a container’s own resource use.

Why there is no standard per-container number

A container’s footprint changes with what it contains and does. Its image layers, active processes, data written to the container, and mounted volumes all affect what you see. Containers may also share image layers, so adding the apparent size of several images can overstate the storage they uniquely occupy.

In WSL 2, Linux distributions run within a shared Linux virtual machine. Docker Desktop’s WSL backend keeps its engine data in a Docker-managed WSL area, rather than making every Docker object part of the filesystem view of one ordinary user distribution. For that reason, a figure from one tool or location is not automatically the full resource picture.

Memory: distinguish WSL settings from container use

WSL’s virtual-machine memory setting

Microsoft documents the memory key in the global %UserProfile%.wslconfig file as a limit for the WSL 2 VM. Its documented default is 50% of total Windows memory. This is a VM configuration default, not a measurement of how much RAM a container uses or a recommended allocation for every system. The same file’s swap default is 25% of Windows memory, rounded up to the nearest GB; swap is disk-backed memory, not RAM. See Microsoft’s advanced WSL configuration documentation.

Docker’s per-container limit

Docker containers have no resource constraints by default. If an application needs a hard memory ceiling, Docker’s --memory option sets a per-container maximum enforced through Linux cgroups, subject to kernel and runtime support. For example:

docker run --memory=2g IMAGE

Here, 2g is an example limit chosen by the user, not a claim about typical container demand. Docker documents the option in its resource constraints guide and container run reference.

Observed use and memory returned to Windows

Use Docker’s live resource reporting or Linux process and memory tools in the environment you want to inspect. Treat the result as a measurement of that machine, running workload, and moment—not as a universal WSL figure. The official sources cited here do not establish a representative RAM-per-container benchmark.

WSL’s experimental autoMemoryReclaim setting concerns cached memory that can be returned to Windows; it does not make an active workload require less memory. Microsoft lists disabled, gradual, and dropCache options, describing gradual as slow, automatic reclaim and dropCache as immediate reclaim; the documentation lists dropCache as the default. Docker recommends enabling memory reclaim to help Windows recover unused WSL memory after image builds. Because this is experimental and version-sensitive, check the current Microsoft configuration guidance and Docker WSL backend guidance before changing it.

Disk: distinguish filesystem capacity from actual use

WSL virtual disk capacity

Microsoft says WSL 2 virtual hard disks (VHDs) grow automatically as storage needs increase. Its current documentation gives each VHD a default maximum capacity of 1 TB; defaultVhdSize is the setting for the distribution VHD maximum. That maximum is not the amount a fresh installation occupies on the Windows drive, nor a measure of a container’s data. A VHD can run out of available space before its theoretical maximum is reached, so check actual free space. See Microsoft’s WSL disk-space guide and WSL configuration reference.

The detailed output distinguishes shared and unique image sizes. Since layers can be shared, do not simply add image sizes to estimate unique disk consumption. Docker documents the output in the docker system df reference.

wsl df -h /

The df output reports filesystem size, used space, available space, and percentage used. This is a filesystem view; it is not a substitute for Docker’s object-level accounting. See Microsoft’s disk-space instructions.

Where Docker Desktop keeps WSL data

Docker Desktop’s WSL 2 backend stores its data by default under %LOCALAPPDATA%Dockerwsl. Docker Desktop’s settings also expose a disk-usage limit and disk-image location. Inspecting an ordinary distribution alone therefore may not reveal all Docker Desktop storage. Details are in Docker’s WSL 2 backend documentation and settings guide.

How to check your setup without confusing the numbers

  1. Check Docker’s objects: run docker system df -v to see image, container, and volume accounting, including shared and unique image sizes.
  2. Check filesystem free space: run Microsoft’s documented wsl.exe --system -d <distribution-name> df -h /mnt/wslg/distro, or wsl df -h / if the first form is unavailable.
  3. Check memory at the right level: inspect the workload’s live resource use, then compare it with any Docker per-container limit and the WSL VM configuration. A VM cap is not the container’s actual use.
  4. Check Docker Desktop’s storage configuration: review its disk-usage limit and disk-image location if the WSL filesystem figure does not explain Docker’s storage.

What to change when memory or disk is tight

Set limits at the scope you intend

Use .wslconfig for WSL 2 VM-wide settings; it affects WSL 2 distributions globally. Use Docker’s --memory when a particular container needs a hard limit. These controls act at different layers, so a VM-wide cap is not a replacement for a per-container limit.

Apply WSL configuration changes

Microsoft says configuration changes take effect after WSL stops and restarts. The quick way to stop all running distributions is:

wsl --shutdown

Use this only when stopping running WSL workloads is acceptable. Microsoft distinguishes global .wslconfig settings from per-distribution /etc/wsl.conf settings in its configuration documentation.

Clean up only data you no longer need

Docker’s docker system df helps identify what Docker is accounting for before cleanup. Confirm which objects are reclaimable before removing anything; images, containers, or volumes may contain work you still need.

Microsoft’s WSL container tutorial notes, “Images and stopped containers consume disk space.” It shows wslc container prune for stopped containers and wslc image prune for unused images. Those are commands for Microsoft’s WSL container CLI, not Docker commands; see Get started with containers on WSL. Microsoft’s separate WSL container overview says that CLI requires WSL 2.9.3 or later.

Which resource number should guide a decision?

Question Use this view What it tells you
How much Docker-managed storage is in use? docker system df -v Docker’s image, container, and local-volume accounting, including shared and unique image sizes.
How full is a WSL filesystem? df -h using Microsoft’s documented WSL command Filesystem capacity, used space, available space, and use percentage.
What is the maximum memory available to WSL 2? memory in %UserProfile%.wslconfig A VM-wide configuration limit, not a container’s measured demand.
How much memory may one Docker container use? Docker’s --memory option A per-container hard maximum when configured and supported.

These measurements answer different questions; none supplies a universal “memory and disk per Linux container” figure. If a measured workload is constrained after you have checked the relevant limits and free capacity, adjust settings or storage based on that workload rather than treating WSL’s VM and VHD defaults as container requirements.
