If a Windows 11 update changed your Start menu, first check whether it still opens. A different layout or renamed section may be an intentional feature rolling out gradually; a Start menu that will not open—especially alongside taskbar, File Explorer, Settings, or Search problems—needs troubleshooting instead. The right next step depends on which symptom you have and which Windows version is installed.
First, tell a layout change from a Start menu failure

Microsoft said on February 24, 2026 that a redesigned Start menu was continuing to roll out to more Windows devices, so two eligible PCs may not receive the same change at the same time. Microsoft’s February 24, 2026 release notes describe that gradual rollout.
If Start opens but looks different
Open Settings > Personalization > Start and inspect the options that are actually present. Microsoft’s August 27, 2026 preview notes for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2 describe small, large, or automatic Start menu sizing, along with separate controls for showing or hiding Pinned, Recommended, and All sections. In that experience, Recommended is renamed Recent. The notes also describe a control to hide the account name and profile image. These features are rolling out gradually, so they may not be available on every device.
Those settings let you adjust the experience when the menu works; they are not a general rollback for every design change. Microsoft’s August 27, 2026 KB5120998 notes describe the options and staged availability.

If Start will not open or other shell features fail
Check the Windows version and recent update
Before applying version-specific advice, identify the Windows version on the affected PC. Open Settings > System > About, or type winver in Search if Search is working. Note the version and any recent update or KB number you can identify.
Do not assume a PC is on Windows 11 26H1 because the current date is in 2026. Microsoft says 26H1 is available only on select new devices and is not offered as an in-place update to earlier Windows 11 devices. See Microsoft’s Windows 11, version 26H1 update history.

Compare the symptoms with Microsoft’s documented managed-device issue
Microsoft documents a particular problem in which Start and other XAML-dependent apps may fail to start or close unexpectedly because dependency packages did not register in time after updates. Reported symptoms include Start failing to open, File Explorer crashing or showing a black screen, the taskbar failing to appear, and Settings or Search failing.
Microsoft says this issue primarily affected a limited number of enterprise or managed environments, particularly deployments where updates were installed before a user’s first sign-in or where app packages needed to register at each logon, such as some non-persistent virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) setups. Microsoft describes it as very unlikely on personal devices used by individuals. That scope applies to this specific XAML issue; it does not mean a personal PC cannot have a different Start problem. Install the latest update; leave the managed-system workaround to IT
For the documented XAML registration issue, Microsoft says updates released beginning June 23, 2026 address the problem, with the fix rolling out gradually, and recommends installing the latest Windows update. If your computer is managed by an employer or school, contact its IT administrator so they can check the update and deployment setup.
KB5072911 includes manual package-registration commands for IT administrators managing enterprise or virtualized systems. They are not a routine fix for a home PC whose Start menu merely looks different, or for an unrelated failure. The documented resolution is specific to the XAML issue; it does not establish that uninstalling an update will fix every Start menu change.

Choose the next step based on what you found
- Start opens and only its appearance changed: inspect the available Start personalization controls and allow for staged feature availability.
- Start and several shell components fail: check the exact Windows version, recent update, and whether the symptoms and managed-device setup match KB5072911.
- The PC is managed or uses virtual desktops: give IT the symptoms, Windows version, and recent update details; the documented package-registration workaround is aimed at administrators.
- The symptoms do not match the documented issue: do not assume that issue—or an update rollback—is the answer. The available Microsoft guidance does not establish one universal cause or rollback for every Start menu problem.
