Read a query plan as a record of how one database optimizer intends—or, in an actual plan, proceeded—to produce a query’s result. Compare estimated and observed rows, access paths, joins, loops, and runtime under matched conditions; do not compare the engines’ cost numbers as though they share a scale.
What a query plan tells you
A query plan is the optimizer’s processing strategy for a particular query and context. It shows how data is accessed, the order in which relations are combined, which join methods are used, and where filters, aggregation, sorting, or other operations occur. It is evidence about that query—not a universal ranking of SQL Server, MySQL, and PostgreSQL.
Plan layouts and operator names differ by engine. Start at the operator that produces the final result and trace its inputs, following the plan’s arrows or tree relationships rather than assuming a particular screen direction. Identify the operations that matter to the question you are investigating: scans or index access, joins, filters, aggregates, sorts, materialization, and repeated subplans.
How do I read an execution plan?
- Record the context. Keep the exact query, parameter values, engine and version, schema, indexes, data volume, and relevant configuration with the plan. Mark whether it is estimated or actual.
- Trace the work. Begin with the final result-producing operator, then follow its inputs to see which relations are read and how they are combined. Note access paths, join methods, filters, aggregation, sorting, and any repeated or materialized work shown.
- Inspect estimates and observations. Compare estimated rows with actual rows where runtime observations exist. Check loop counts and available timing or resource information; a small per-loop figure can still represent substantial total work when repeated many times.
- Find the earliest material row mismatch. A mismatch near the start of the plan can affect downstream choices and magnify later work. Treat it as a clue about assumptions, not proof of a particular cause.
- Test one plausible change at a time. Re-run the same query on representative data and compare the same measures. Validate changes in a safe environment before production.
Estimated plans and actual plans answer different questions
An estimated plan describes the optimizer’s intended strategy without executing the query. An actual plan includes runtime context, so it can show how observed execution compared with estimates. These are not interchangeable evidence: comparing a SQL Server estimated plan with another engine’s runtime-analyzed plan mixes a prediction with an observation.

| Engine | Estimated plan | Runtime observations | What to notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| SQL Server | In SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), an estimated execution plan or SHOWPLAN_XML gives a compile-time plan without executing the query. | An actual execution plan is available after execution and includes execution context, runtime details, and warnings. | Compare estimated and actual rows, then inspect available runtime and resource details. The estimated plan alone contains no runtime evidence. |
| MySQL 8.4 | EXPLAIN describes how the optimizer would process a supported statement. | EXPLAIN ANALYZE executes supported statements and reports iterator estimates, actual times, rows, and loops. It uses TREE output. | Read iterator rows and loops together; documented timing for multiple loops is an average per loop. |
| PostgreSQL 18 | EXPLAIN displays the planner-generated plan and estimates. | EXPLAIN ANALYZE executes the statement and adds observed rows and timing, as well as planning and execution times. | Inspect rows and loops and any reported buffers or other instrumentation. Repeated-node measurements are per-execution averages. |
In all three systems, an actual-plan option runs the query to obtain observations. PostgreSQL explicitly warns that instrumentation adds overhead, so measured timing is not necessarily the same as an uninstrumented run.
What is the difference between estimated and actual rows?
Estimated rows are the optimizer’s prediction of how many rows an operation will produce. Actual rows are observations from execution. Comparing them helps reveal where the optimizer’s assumptions about selectivity or data distribution may not match what happened.

For example, if an early filter is estimated to return few rows but produces many, later joins may have to process far more data than the optimizer anticipated. Find the earliest substantial divergence rather than blaming only the final, expensive-looking operator. Then check the predicate, parameter values, data distribution, and freshness of statistics. A mismatch identifies where to investigate; it does not, by itself, identify the cause or prove that an index is missing.
Account for repetition. MySQL reports iterator rows and loops, and its documented timing for multiple loops is averaged per loop. PostgreSQL also reports loops, with repeated-node measurements expressed as per-execution averages. Interpret those per-loop figures alongside the number of executions; do not mistake one iteration’s work for the total. SQL Server actual plans include runtime details that let you compare observed execution with estimates.

Why is the optimizer using a table scan instead of an index?
A scan is not automatically a problem. It can be a sensible choice when a table is small, when the query needs a large share of its rows, or when the required ordering and available indexes make scanning cheaper. An index path is not inherently faster if it still requires fetching many rows or doing additional work.
Judge the choice in context: how many rows the query needs, how selective its filters are, the table’s size, the plan’s other operations, and the actual work observed. If the estimated row count looks implausible, investigate the predicate and statistics before changing the query or schema. In MySQL, ANALYZE TABLE is one documented way to refresh statistics that affect optimizer choices.

How to compare plans across the three engines
Compare behavior under matched conditions, not the visual format or a cost figure taken out of context. Keep the query, parameters, schema, indexes, data volume, and relevant configuration comparable; record each engine’s version and whether its plan includes execution observations.
- Plan shape: Compare the chosen access paths, join order and methods, filters, sorting, and aggregation.
- Cardinality accuracy: Compare estimated rows with actual rows where available, paying particular attention to the earliest substantial divergence.
- Repeated work: Include loop counts when interpreting rows and timing from repeated operators.
- Measured behavior: Compare runtime and reported resource information only when the test conditions and measurement method are comparable.
Displayed costs are optimizer estimates within each engine, not wall-clock time or a shared cross-product scale. PostgreSQL documents that cost estimates depend on the platform; cost values from SQL Server, MySQL, and PostgreSQL therefore should not be treated as directly comparable. A plan change is meaningful when its shape, estimates, or measured behavior improve for the workload you care about—not because one product prints a smaller cost.

Run actual-plan analysis safely
Runtime analysis executes work and can affect both the system and the result being measured. SQL Server actual plans require execution. MySQL EXPLAIN ANALYZE executes supported statements. PostgreSQL EXPLAIN ANALYZE also executes the statement: a SELECT discards returned rows, but a data-changing statement can still have effects. PostgreSQL documents using a transaction and rollback for controlled analysis of modifying statements, but rollback does not make every possible external side effect safe.
Quick Recap
- Use an estimated plan when compile-time inspection is sufficient and execution is not appropriate.
- Run actual-plan analysis on representative data in a safe environment, especially for expensive or data-changing statements.
- Allow for instrumentation overhead when interpreting PostgreSQL EXPLAIN ANALYZE timings.
- Refresh or verify relevant statistics when estimates seem implausible; in MySQL, ANALYZE TABLE is one available statistics-refresh mechanism.
