Reviewers did not agree on which play mode felt more consistent. Nintendo Life characterized performance in both docked and handheld play as solid in its Switch review. NintendoEverything’s review reported that its reviewer saw more consistent approaches to 60 fps in handheld play, alongside a resolution cost. These are different reviewer experiences, not proof that one mode always performs better.

VG Tech’s description says visible effects can trigger resolution drops. The measurements describe that test, not guaranteed output in every scene, patch, or Switch system. A large TV may make softness more noticeable; choosing TV play is reasonable if sharpness matters more to you than portability, but it does not guarantee a higher frame rate.
For visual character rather than settings, GameSpot’s review describes vivid colors and particle effects during action alongside simpler geometry, rough textures, and duller backgrounds. That is a reviewer’s qualitative impression, not a measured comparison of graphics options.

- Set expectations for frame rate. Gameplay has a reported 60 fps target, but launch-era analysis found it was not consistently maintained; cutscenes and some large set pieces were reported at 30 fps.
