Use Date for a straightforward exact timestamp that must work with existing JavaScript APIs. Choose Temporal.ZonedDateTime when the time zone and calendar are part of the value’s meaning—for example, an appointment whose local time must be interpreted using a particular region’s rules. Check support in your target browsers and server runtimes before relying on Temporal.
What information does each type preserve?
The key difference is not simply that one API is newer. It is what the value needs to represent: an exact instant, an instant interpreted in a named region, or local date-and-time fields without an assigned zone.
| Type | What it represents | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
Date |
An exact point in time, with millisecond precision. The value does not retain a selected named time zone. MDN: Date | You need a timestamp and compatibility with existing JavaScript APIs. |
Temporal.ZonedDateTime |
An instant together with a time zone and calendar, connecting that moment to its local wall-clock representation. MDN: Temporal.ZonedDateTime | A named region’s time-zone rules matter to display or calculations. |
Temporal.Instant |
An exact moment without a time zone or calendar, at nanosecond precision. MDN: Temporal.Instant | You need an instant but do not need zone context. |
Temporal.PlainDateTime |
Date and clock fields without a time zone. MDN: Temporal.PlainDateTime | The local time is intentionally floating or has not yet been assigned to a region. |
Does JavaScript Date store a time zone?
No. A Date represents an instant; it does not remember a chosen named zone such as a city or region. When you display or interpret that instant as local time, the applicable environment’s local time zone affects the result. That is different from retaining a particular region’s rules as part of the date value.
A UTC offset alone is not a substitute for a named region. An offset can change because of daylight-saving transitions or political decisions. A named time zone supplies the rules used to interpret a moment as local time. MDN: Temporal.ZonedDateTime

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When should you use Temporal.ZonedDateTime?
Use it when a particular region’s local time is part of the event’s meaning. For example, a scheduled appointment in a specific city may need to display according to that region’s rules, even as those rules change. ZonedDateTime keeps the instant and the zone together for that interpretation.
It is not a universal replacement for Date. If all you need is the moment an event happened, a zoned value may carry context you do not need. If the value is a date and clock time that has not yet been assigned to a region, use a Plain type rather than implying a zone.

What happens during daylight-saving transitions?
Local clock times do not always map neatly to one instant. When clocks move forward, some local times do not occur. When clocks move back, some local times occur twice. When converting a local time into a zoned value, Temporal provides a disambiguation option to choose how to handle those cases. MDN: Temporal.ZonedDateTime
| Option | Behavior for an overlap | Behavior for a nonexistent local time |
|---|---|---|
earlier |
Selects the earlier instant. | Moves backward by the gap’s duration. |
later |
Selects the later instant. | Moves forward by the gap’s duration. |
compatible (default) |
Selects the earlier instant, matching Date behavior. |
Moves forward by the gap’s duration, matching Date behavior. |
reject |
Throws an error. | Throws an error. |
For user-entered appointments or recurring schedules, decide whether to resolve ambiguous times automatically or surface an error for the user to correct. Use reject when silently choosing a different instant would be unacceptable.

How do you choose the right type?
- One exact moment, with existing API compatibility: Use
Date. ConsiderTemporal.Instantif you want a time-zone-free instant with nanosecond precision. - A moment interpreted using a specific region’s local rules: Use
Temporal.ZonedDateTime. - Date and clock time with no assigned region: Use
Temporal.PlainDateTime. - Mixed or older browser targets: Check current support for every browser and server runtime in scope before adopting Temporal.
Make the decision based on the meaning you must preserve, how the application should handle daylight-saving gaps and overlaps, the precision required, interoperability needs, and runtime support.

MDN labels Temporal as “Limited availability” and “not Baseline,” meaning it does not work in some widely used browsers. Check the current compatibility information for your actual browser and server targets; do not assume support is uniform. MDN: Temporal

During a gradual migration, first classify existing values by what they mean. If a Date represents a moment and preserving that moment is the goal, convert it to an instant; attach a named zone when region-specific interpretation is needed. Keep local or floating date-times distinct rather than assigning them a zone they were never meant to have. If Temporal support is incomplete, evaluate whether a polyfill or continued use of Date suits the project.
