Measure your child’s chest and height, then compare both with the size chart for the specific T-shirt you’re buying. Age and labels such as XS or S are only useful within that brand’s chart: Nike, adidas, and Reebok publish different sizing systems, not a universal conversion.
What measurements matter for a kids’ T-shirt?
Start with chest measurement, the most directly relevant body measurement for a top, and use height as a cross-check. A child’s age can help you find a starting point in a brand’s chart, but it does not guarantee a particular fit.
Measure the chest
- Have the child stand naturally, with arms relaxed.
- Wrap a flexible tape measure around the fullest part of the chest. Keep the tape horizontal and comfortably snug, not tight.
- Note the measurement and its unit, then compare it with the chart for the exact brand or product. Nike gives this method in its Kids’ Clothing Size Chart.
Check height
Measure the child’s height without shoes and compare it with the same chart. Nike, adidas, and Reebok list height alongside chest ranges, so height can help resolve a choice when the chest measurement sits near a size boundary. Their charts use different ranges and labels; do not transfer a size directly from one brand to another.

- Open the size chart linked from the specific T-shirt listing or the brand’s official guide.
- Find the child’s chest measurement first, then check height against the same row or size range.
- Read the chart’s label system carefully. It may combine age, numeric sizing, and letter sizes, and those labels are not interchangeable across brands.
- If the product listing has its own chart or sizing notes, use those for that garment rather than assuming a general brand chart captures every product’s fit.
For example, Nike’s Kids Fit chart lists XS as numeric 6–7 and age 7–8, for a height of 48–50 inches and chest of 24–25.5 inches. Its S is numeric 8–9 and age 8–10, for a height of 50–54 inches and chest of 25.5–27.5 inches. These are Nike chart entries, not a general rule for other brands. See Nike’s current chart.

The labels and ranges differ elsewhere. adidas separates its youth and teen sections and shows chest and height ranges; its chart’s youth/teen examples span chest measurements from 25 inches for ages 7–8 to 36 inches for ages 15–16. Reebok’s guide includes labels from 3T through XL; examples include XS for ages 7–8 with height 49–50 inches and chest 25 inches, and S for ages 9–10 with height 54–55 inches and chest 27–28 inches. Consult each brand’s chart directly rather than treating these examples as a cross-brand conversion: adidas Kids Clothing Size Chart and Reebok Kids’ Clothing Size Guide.
What if your child is between sizes?
Choose based on the fit you want. Nike advises choosing the smaller size for a tighter fit or the larger size for a looser fit when a body measurement falls between two sizes. For tops, Nike also says to follow the chest measurement if chest and hip measurements point to different sizes. These are Nike’s recommendations; follow another brand’s own guidance if it differs.

- Measure the child rather than relying on age alone.
- Compare chest and height with the chart for the actual brand or listing.
- Use one brand’s chart at a time; XS, S, age, and numeric labels do not map universally.
- For a borderline measurement, decide whether a closer or looser fit is preferred and apply the brand’s advice.
