NPR ended comments on NPR.org story pages on August 23, 2016. So older references to an NPR story’s comment section describe a feature that has been discontinued—not a current NPR.org discussion area. That change does not establish the policy for every NPR program, member station, or affiliated site.
What happened to comments on NPR.org?
NPR announced that it would discontinue comments on its story pages effective August 23, 2016. The announcement said the organization wanted to prioritize other ways of building community and engaging its audience. A public-radio station reproduced the announcement, and contemporaneous reporting by Current covered the decision: WXXI’s report and Current’s report.
Why did NPR end story-page comments?
NPR’s stated reason focused on whether the feature served readers. Scott Montgomery, then NPR’s managing editor for digital news, told Current: “the comment sections on NPR.org stories are not providing a useful experience for the vast majority of our users.” This is NPR’s rationale for its 2016 decision; it does not show that all comments were harmful or that moderation problems alone caused the change.
Does this apply to every NPR-related website?
No universal policy for all NPR-affiliated pages follows from the NPR.org announcement. Related sites may be operated separately and have their own rules. For example, StateImpact has published community guidelines, while StateImpact Pennsylvania separately announced that it was ending comments. Those examples illustrate why a page’s operator and its own policy matter; they do not establish what every related site allows today.

How can parents check a page’s current rules?
- Identify the site. Check whether the page is on NPR.org, a member-station website, or another affiliated project.
- Look at the page itself. Check for a comments area, community guidelines, or contact and feedback options shown on that specific page.
- Use only the channel the site provides. NPR’s 2016 announcement discussed other forms of audience engagement, but it does not verify one universal feedback channel available today.
