First check the device maker’s instructions to confirm that the device supports 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi and which app it needs. If it requires 2.4 GHz, make sure your router broadcasts that band; select its 2.4 GHz network if it has a separate name, then put the device in setup mode and follow the app’s prompts. Whether your phone must also use that network depends on the device’s setup process.

Before you start: confirm the device and setup method

Many smart-home Wi‑Fi devices use 2.4 GHz, but it is not a universal requirement. Amazon Customer Service says that “Most smart home Wi-Fi devices only work on 2.4GHz bands” in its Alexa setup guidance. Google’s troubleshooting for its speakers and displays, by contrast, recommends trying either 2.4 or 5 GHz in the relevant situation. Follow the instructions for your exact model rather than assuming that another product’s requirements apply.

  • Check the device label or manufacturer’s support page for supported Wi‑Fi bands.
  • Find out whether setup must begin in the manufacturer’s app. Amazon notes that third-party Wi‑Fi devices that are not Matter-certified may need initial configuration in their maker’s app before Alexa can use them.
  • Have the Wi‑Fi password ready and use the setup or pairing method specified for the model.

For example, Amazon’s Alexa flow is Devices → plus (+) → Add Device, followed by choosing the device type and brand and completing the prompts. The exact flow may differ by device.

Connect the device to 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi

  1. Confirm 2.4 GHz is available. In your router’s app or administration interface, check that the 2.4 GHz band is enabled. Router menus vary, so use the documentation for your router instead of relying on a universal menu path.
  2. Choose the right network name. If the router lists separate network names (SSIDs) for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, select the 2.4 GHz name in the device’s setup flow. If the router combines bands under one name, it may choose a band automatically; the name alone may not reveal which band the device will use. Google explains how band selection works on its Nest Wifi, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google Wifi routers.
  3. Start pairing. Put the device into its model-specific setup mode, then follow the manufacturer’s app instructions. If you are adding an Alexa-compatible device, Alexa may offer an add-device flow; some third-party devices require setup in their own app first.
  4. Connect your phone if the setup flow requires it. When the instructions call for the phone and device to use the same network, connect your phone to the 2.4 GHz network before continuing. This is not a universal requirement: Google specifies it for certain seamless setup troubleshooting scenarios.
  5. Enter the Wi‑Fi password and finish setup. Enter the password carefully, then wait for the app to confirm the connection. For password or security-mode compatibility, consult the documentation for both the device and router; there is no single setting that applies to every model.

If setup fails

Work through these checks before resetting the device. A reset can erase configuration, and the sequence differs by model.

  • Note: To use Alexa and Google Home, please note that this product cannot be connected directly. You need to connect the product to the network and the GHome APP first.
  • The 2.4 GHz network is missing: Verify that the router broadcasts 2.4 GHz. If it combines bands under one SSID, the band may not appear as a separate network. Consult the router documentation for its band and network-name settings.
  • The device cannot find or join Wi‑Fi: Recheck that the model supports the selected band, that internet service is working, and that the device is in its specified pairing mode. Confirm that you are using the required app and that the password is correct. Amazon’s Alexa device connection troubleshooting covers basic checks for devices being added to Alexa.
  • The app fails during network handoff: Check the product’s setup instructions to see whether your phone must be on the same network as the device. Google documents this requirement for particular seamless-setup cases; it should not be treated as a rule for every smart-home product.
  • The device is a Google speaker or display: Follow Google’s product-specific Wi‑Fi troubleshooting. Its guidance includes trying 2.4 and 5 GHz on a dual-band router, so do not force 2.4 GHz if the model’s instructions suggest otherwise.
  • The router was replaced or its password changed: Reconnect the device using its app. For Nest or Home products, Google notes that some devices may need a factory reset and setup again; see its instructions for connecting to a new Wi‑Fi network.
  • The signal seems weak: Try setup nearer the router or mesh point. Google notes that mesh band selection can factor in distance from a point, but moving closer is a troubleshooting step—not a guaranteed fix for every connection problem.

If these checks do not resolve the issue, use the manufacturer’s model-specific guidance before changing additional router settings or performing a reset.
