Open source is not a safety guarantee. A Mac system monitor is worth trusting only after you assess the specific release: its permissions, data flows, signing and update path, and the project’s maintenance and security practices. macOS signing and notarization provide useful signals, but they are not a privacy review or a full code audit.
Does open source mean a Mac monitor is safe?
No. Open source means a project makes source code available for inspection; it does not prove that anyone has reviewed it, that the installed app was built from that code, or that the software is free of vulnerabilities. An audit is meaningful only when its scope is clear, including the version examined and the risks it considered.
Evaluate the exact app and release you plan to install. A repository can change, release assets can differ from the visible source, and an app’s permissions or network behavior can change between versions.
What do signing and notarization tell you?
Apple says Developer ID signing helps macOS verify that a downloaded app comes from an identified developer and has not been altered. Notarization is a check for known malicious software. Apple’s wording is: “An app that has been notarised by Apple indicates that Apple has checked it for malicious software and none was detected.” Apple Support: Open apps safely on your Mac.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A clean notarization result is not a guarantee against every form of malware, a code audit, or a judgment about whether the app’s data practices are acceptable. Treat signing and notarization as parts of a trust check, not a verdict.
What permissions does a Mac system monitor need?
Permissions should correspond to a feature the app explains. macOS lets users review and revoke permissions in System Settings under Privacy & Security. Depending on the feature, controls may include Bluetooth, Location Services, Accessibility, Automation, and Full Disk Access. Apple describes Full Disk Access as allowing access to all files, including data from other apps and certain administrative settings. macOS also asks for consent for protected locations such as Documents, Downloads, Desktop, iCloud Drive, and network volumes; accessibility and automation capabilities require user permission. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Ask what the grant enables. The app should connect a permission to a named function and explain whether that function is optional.
- Be especially cautious with broad access. Full Disk Access, Accessibility, Automation, or administrator/root installation should have a specific rationale. Do not assume a monitor needs these merely because it reports system metrics.
- Decline unnecessary access. If the app works without a permission, or its explanation is vague, leave it off until you understand the trade-off.
How should you check privacy and network activity?
Read the project’s privacy and data-flow explanations, then distinguish claims from verified behavior. Look for telemetry, crash reporting, update checks, cloud sync, diagnostics uploads, public-IP lookups, and user-configured network probes. For each, establish what is sent, when it is sent, who receives it, and whether you can disable it. A statement such as “no telemetry” does not necessarily mean the app never connects to the internet.
Two project pages illustrate why precise wording matters. The descriptions below are maintainer claims; the relevant code and release behavior were not independently verified.

| Project | Permission and network behavior described by the project | Distribution and requirements described |
|---|---|---|
| Performance Monitor | Lists Bluetooth permission for paired device names and battery levels. Describes a GitHub update check, an optional public-IP lookup that users can switch off, and a latency probe to a host selected in Settings. | Describes the app as ad-hoc signed without an Apple Developer ID and provides first-launch instructions for bypassing the unidentified-developer warning. Its source-build route requires an Apple Silicon Mac, Xcode Command Line Tools, and Swift 5.10 or later. |
| Mectrics | Claims readings use local, read-only system interfaces, says it has no telemetry, and describes one possible network request: an update check initiated by the user. | Documents macOS 15 or later and says the app is Developer ID signed and notarized. Its README includes build-from-source steps. |
These examples are not endorsements or evidence that either app is safe. One describes several distinct network requests, including optional or user-configured ones; the other describes a user-initiated update check. Check the claims against the specific release you intend to use.
How to review a specific app before installing it
- Start at the canonical project page. Confirm the release tag, asset name, supported macOS version and hardware, and whether the release is stable, beta, or repackaged by a third party.
- Check the trust chain. Find out whether the app is Developer ID signed and notarized. If it is not, understand why and what warning macOS presents; do not make bypassing Gatekeeper a routine step. Compare the download with project-provided checksums or reproducible-build information when available.
- Map permissions to features. Identify what each grant allows, whether it is optional, and whether the app still works without it. Give particular scrutiny to Full Disk Access, Accessibility, Automation, and administrator/root installation.
- Trace the data flow. Identify each endpoint, what information is sent, when the connection occurs, and whether the feature can be turned off. Include update checks, crash reports, cloud features, and diagnostics—not just telemetry.
- Inspect relevant code and build details. For a scoped review, examine permission declarations, network clients and URLs, update code, launch agents or helpers, storage locations, privileged operations, dependencies, and release/build scripts. A quick repository glance is not proof of safety.
- Assess maintenance and security response. Look for a security reporting channel, recent releases, issue handling, dependency updates, and clearly stated supported versions. Popularity or star counts alone do not establish security.
When is Apple’s Activity Monitor the better choice?
macOS Activity Monitor is built in, so using it avoids introducing another monitor vendor. A third-party menu-bar monitor may offer additional views, but compare only the features you actually need: permission scope, local versus remote processing, disclosed endpoints, signing and notarization, update model, and maintenance. No feature-parity ranking is established here, so the right choice depends on your specific monitoring needs.
