You can use userChrome.css to restyle Firefox’s browser interface, but there is no single CSS file that reliably restores every past Firefox design. First check whether Firefox’s built-in Compact Mode gives you the denser toolbar you want. For other changes, place a stylesheet in the active profile’s chrome folder, enable the loading preference, and add rules that match your Firefox version and the specific interface elements you want to change.
Check Firefox’s built-in options first
If by “classic” you mean a more compact toolbar, try Compact Mode before editing CSS. Mozilla’s refreshed Firefox design began rolling out on desktop and mobile on September 29, 2026, and brought back Compact Mode. Availability can depend on your Firefox version and rollout status. See Mozilla’s Firefox design announcement for the rollout details.
Firefox also supports toolbar layout customization, themes, and add-ons. These supported options are easier to maintain than custom CSS. Settings locations changed in 2026: Mozilla says its June 16 settings redesign retired the longstanding General page and moved options into categories including Appearance, Accessibility, Languages, and Tabs and browsing. Existing customization options remain available, but the exact path may vary by release. See Mozilla’s settings announcement.
Use userChrome.css when you need finer control over Firefox’s own interface—such as changing element colors or sizes, hiding interface elements, or repositioning them—and built-in controls do not meet your needs. It is not the same as userContent.css, which is for web content. Mozilla classifies custom style rules as advanced configuration and does not officially support them. Mozilla’s advanced customization guidance explains the distinction.

Set up userChrome.css
- Find the profile Firefox is using. In Firefox, open
about:supportorabout:profilesand use the profile information to locate the active profile folder. The exact controls vary by operating system and Firefox version; make sure you use the profile you actually open Firefox with. - Create the stylesheet folder. In that profile folder, create a directory named
chromeif it does not already exist. - Create the CSS file. Inside
chrome, create a plain-text file nameduserChrome.css. Check that your editor or operating system has not silently added a second extension, such as.txt. - Allow Firefox to load custom stylesheets. Open
about:config, search fortoolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets, and set it totrue. Mozilla says this preference defaults tofalse. - Restart Firefox. Firefox reads the stylesheet at startup, so changes will not take effect until you restart the browser. Then check the interface.
Mozilla documents the profile stylesheet location, preference, and startup behavior in its contributors guide to advanced CSS customization.
Choose CSS for the interface you actually want
“Classic Firefox” can mean different things: a denser toolbar, a different tab shape, a prior tab position, or another earlier arrangement. A stylesheet must target the relevant interface elements in your current Firefox version. Mozilla notes that the interface’s markup and styling evolve, so old rules can stop working or need updating.

There is no version-independent block of CSS that this guide can responsibly present as a complete restoration recipe. Start with a rule set written for your Firefox release and the particular change you want. Keep a copy of the original file, and add or edit rules in small, reversible increments so you can identify which change causes a problem.
Choose between Compact Mode and custom CSS
| Approach | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in Compact Mode | Reducing interface density where the option is available in your Firefox version | Uses a native Firefox control and is easier to maintain; it does not provide arbitrary CSS-level changes. |
userChrome.css |
Fine-grained changes to Firefox interface elements that built-in options do not provide | More control, but custom rules are unsupported and can break as Firefox’s interface changes. |
Fix a stylesheet that is not working
- Check the file path: confirm
userChrome.cssis inside thechromefolder of the profile Firefox is actually using. - Check the filename: make sure it is not
userChrome.css.txt. - Check the preference: confirm
toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheetsis set totrueinabout:config. - Restart Firefox: the browser reads the file at startup.
- Check the rules: a rule written for another Firefox version or a different interface element may no longer match the current UI. Test by reverting recent edits or temporarily removing rules.
- Try Troubleshoot Mode: use Firefox Troubleshoot Mode to check whether disabling custom rules resolves the problem. Mozilla describes this and other recovery options in its CSS customization guide.
Undo the customization safely
- Open
about:configand settoolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheetsback tofalse. - In the active profile’s
chromefolder, remove or renameuserChrome.css. - Restart Firefox and check whether the interface has returned to normal.
Firefox Refresh is a broader recovery measure, not the first fix for a stylesheet problem. Mozilla says Refresh removes add-ons and other customizations, including extension data and preference configurations. Try disabling the stylesheet first.
