What you need to know before you start
J2ME Loader is an Android emulator for Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME), the platform used by many games on older feature phones. The project describes support as covering most 2D games and some 3D games, with limitations; that is a broad developer claim, not a guarantee that a particular game will work. The project’s repository lists Android 4.0+ as the system requirement. Check the J2ME Loader project README for its feature and compatibility information.
The Google Play listing for J2ME Loader showed an update date of August 7, 2024, and, when accessed in 2026, displayed 5M+ downloads and a 4.3-star rating. Those are changeable store-listing figures, not independent compatibility measurements. View J2ME Loader on Google Play.
JAR and JAD files have different roles
A JAR contains the Java ME game, while a JAD is a Java ME application descriptor associated with a MIDlet suite. Oracle’s Java ME emulator documentation demonstrates launching a MIDlet using a JAD descriptor. If your game came with a matching JAD, keep it alongside the JAR. Use game files you have the right to use and obtain them from a source you trust. The sources cited here do not establish that any particular game-download archive is legal or safe.
How to open a J2ME game on Android
- Install J2ME Loader. Find J2ME Loader through its Google Play listing. The project identifies its source code repository as open source and lists Android 4.0+ as the system requirement.
- Locate the game’s JAR. Keep the matching JAD if one was supplied. A file ending in .jar is not, by itself, proof that it is a genuine Java ME game; confirm that the file is the MIDlet game you intend to run.
- Import or open the JAR in J2ME Loader. Use the import/open control available in your installed version and select the game file. The reviewed official pages do not document the current button label or a single storage location. Android file-access prompts and app layouts can vary by Android version.
- Launch the game. If controls or display sizing do not suit your phone, use the emulator’s virtual keyboard, scaling support, and per-application settings.
Check compatibility for the specific game
Compatibility is title-specific. Before assuming a crash, blank screen, or missing feature is caused by your phone, consult the project’s separate lists for tested touchscreen games, tested non-touchscreen games, and known bugs. The repository and Google Play listing describe support in broad, qualified terms; neither establishes a percentage of games that work. Open the project repository and its compatibility lists.

Consider whether the game is 2D or 3D, whether its controls need remapping, and whether its display needs scaling. The current Google Play description warns that 3D support has limitations. The README and store listing differ on Mascot Capsule 3D support, so do not assume those titles will work; check the specific game’s status and test it on your setup.

The game file will not launch
Check that you have a Java ME/MIDlet game file, rather than an Android APK, a desktop-Java archive, or an unrelated ZIP. File extensions alone do not verify a file’s format or safety. If a JAD came with the game, retain the matching descriptor and consult the project’s title-specific lists.

Controls feel wrong
Open that game’s settings and adjust the virtual keyboard layout. J2ME Loader documents an on-screen keyboard and per-game settings. The reviewed official documentation does not establish Bluetooth controller compatibility, so do not assume an external controller will work or map correctly.
Performance is slow
The project’s troubleshooting tips say filtering can reduce performance and recommend disabling it if a game is too slow. This is developer guidance, not an independent performance test.

Graphics flicker
The project suggests enabling “Immediate processing mode” to address image flickering. Because this is an official tip rather than a universal fix, use it as a troubleshooting option for affected games.
Scaling looks poor, or the game crashes or omits features
Try the emulator’s scaling options and per-game configuration, then check the tested-game and known-bugs lists. The available sources do not establish universal resolution settings or guarantee that a particular device and game combination will behave correctly.
