ProRAW vs. ProRes at a glance
| What you need to know | ProRAW | ProRes |
|---|---|---|
| Capture type | Still photos | Video |
| Main benefit | More flexibility when adjusting exposure, color, and white balance | Higher color fidelity and less compression for editing |
| Format and editing | DNG; works in Apple Photos and apps that support DNG or ProRAW | Works in Apple Photos, iMovie, and compatible third-party editors |
| Storage tradeoff | Apple says files are 10 to 12 times larger than HEIF or JPEG | Apple says files can be up to 30 times larger than HEVC |
| Not available in | Portrait mode or Live Photos | Cinematic, Slo-Mo, or Time-lapse modes |
These format and size comparisons are Apple’s published guidance; actual capture options and file sizes depend on the iPhone model, settings, and software. See Apple’s ProRAW guide and ProRes guide.
What does ProRAW do?
Apple ProRAW combines information from a standard RAW format with iPhone image processing. The result is a DNG still image that leaves more room to adjust exposure, color, and white balance in a compatible editor. It is useful when you expect to edit a photo substantially; it is not a separate video setting or a requirement for taking a good picture. Apple recommends using an editor that supports ProRAW for the best results. An app without ProRAW support may display the image differently.
Resolution and file size
Apple’s support page gives approximate file sizes of 25 MB for a 12-megapixel ProRAW photo and 75 MB for a 48-megapixel photo. Apple does not state a publication date for these figures, and they are estimates rather than guaranteed sizes. Resolution and image content affect the actual file. On supported newer Pro models, 48 MP capture preserves more detail and latitude for cropping, while 12 MP files use less storage.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Apple says 48 MP ProRAW capture is limited to the main camera at 1x. Ultra Wide, Telephoto, Night mode, flash, and macro photos are limited to 12 MP. Exact resolution choices vary by model and iOS version; consult Apple’s current ProRAW support information for the device you use.
When ProRAW is worth using
- Choose it for an important still photo you plan to edit, especially if you want latitude to change exposure or color later.
- Use regular capture when you want smaller, ready-to-share files and do not expect to make substantial edits.
- Do not expect it in Portrait mode or Live Photos; ProRAW is not supported in either.
What does ProRes do?
ProRes is an iPhone video recording option for footage intended for editing. Apple describes it as offering higher color fidelity and less compression than everyday video capture. Supported clips can be edited in Apple Photos, iMovie, or compatible third-party software. An app that does not support ProRes may transcode the video to H.264, so check the editing and transfer workflow before recording a large project.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Model and mode limits
Apple’s current support page lists ProRes on iPhone 13 Pro through iPhone 17 Pro models. Availability also depends on storage capacity, resolution, frame rate, and whether recording is to internal or external storage. ProRes is not available in Cinematic, Slo-Mo, or Time-lapse modes. The camera interface may expose different ProRes choices on different models.
File size and external recording
Apple says ProRes files can be up to 30 times larger than HEVC files. That is an upper comparison, not a promise that every clip will be exactly 30 times larger. Direct recording to a USB-C external storage device is documented for iPhone 15 Pro, 16 Pro, and 17 Pro models.

For specified 4K60 external recording, Apple requires a drive that sustains at least 220 MB/s and has a maximum power draw of 4.5 W. For 4K120 on supported iPhone 16 Pro and 17 Pro models, Apple specifies at least 440 MB/s and the same maximum 4.5 W power draw. Check Apple’s current ProRes requirements and the drive’s specifications before relying on it. An external SSD is relevant if you want to record directly to a drive; it does not improve image quality and is not needed for ProRAW.
How to turn on ProRAW or ProRes
- For ProRAW: On a supported iPhone, open Settings > Camera > Formats and enable the ProRAW control. In Camera, select the available format or resolution option. The exact controls depend on the model and iOS version. Apple’s ProRAW instructions explain the current device options.
- For ProRes: Open Settings > Camera > Formats and enable ProRes on a supported model. In Camera, select Video and choose a ProRes option if available. Check the displayed resolution and frame-rate choices for your model. Apple’s ProRes recording instructions cover the supported workflow.
What happens when you edit or share the files?
An original ProRAW image uses the .dng extension. Sharing an edited version from Photos may produce a .jpg, so the file you send may not be the original DNG. For ProRes, Apple documents transfer by cable, AirDrop using “All Photos Data,” iCloud Photos, or external storage where supported. Choose a transfer method that preserves the original if your editing workflow depends on it.
