For an Android-only Kotlin app, Timber is a practical convenience layer over Android’s native logger, provided you install the Trees you want at startup. For logging calls shared across Kotlin Multiplatform targets, Napier is the more relevant fit. If your project uses SLF4J, kotlin-logging adds Kotlin-friendly syntax but still needs a configured logging implementation. Klogging is worth considering when structured events and coroutine-aware context are central requirements.

These libraries solve different problems; the available project documentation does not establish a universal performance winner. The right choice depends on target platforms, who controls the output destination, and the setup your team is prepared to maintain.

Best Kotlin logging libraries for Android at a glance

Library Best fit Approach and notable features Important caveat
Timber Android-only apps wanting a compact API over Android logging Tree-based extension points, a DebugTree that can infer a tag, and lint rules for issues such as formatting, tag length, and exception logging. You must plant the Trees the app needs; none are installed by default.
Napier Kotlin Multiplatform projects sharing logging calls Documents support for Android, Darwin platforms, JVM, and JavaScript, with platform-specific output mechanisms. Output and behavior are not necessarily identical on every target; check current target support.
kotlin-logging Kotlin projects using SLF4J-compatible logging Kotlin-oriented logger creation and lazy message lambdas over the SLF4J ecosystem. It is a facade, not a complete destination; supply and configure a runtime implementation.
Klogging Teams prioritizing structured events and coroutine-aware context The project describes pure-Kotlin structured logging and coroutine support. Its documentation says Android builds require SDK 24 or later. Compare its configuration and output needs with an Android-first option.

How to choose a logger for your Kotlin app

Start with your target platforms

For code that runs only on Android, Timber or Android’s native Log API are straightforward starting points. If shared source must log on Android and other Kotlin Multiplatform targets, Napier’s documented Android, Darwin, JVM, and JavaScript coverage is more directly relevant. Confirm the current release’s target support before adopting it.

Decide who is responsible for output

Android’s native logging APIs feed Logcat. Napier maps calls to platform-specific mechanisms, including android.util.Log on Android and java.util.logging.Logger on its JVM target. Kotlin-logging delegates through SLF4J, so the facade alone does not decide the final destination or level behavior: the runtime implementation and its configuration do.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Match setup work to the features you need

  • Choose Timber when its Android-focused API, Tree extension points, and lint checks suit the app, and your team will install the Trees it needs.
  • Choose Napier when a shared logging API across supported multiplatform targets matters more than identical output across platforms.
  • Choose kotlin-logging when Kotlin-friendly calls fit a project that already uses, or intends to configure, the SLF4J ecosystem.
  • Evaluate Klogging when structured events and coroutine-aware context are requirements, rather than assuming it is a drop-in replacement for a simpler Android logger.

Check artifacts and compatibility before adding dependencies

Coordinates and versions can differ by artifact and change over time. The kotlin-logging repository’s README shows version 7.0.3 for its JVM artifact, while Maven Central’s Android artifact directory lists 7.0.14; these are distinct artifacts, not interchangeable version declarations. Check the project’s current setup instructions and package listing, then confirm compatibility with your Kotlin version, Android Gradle Plugin, Android SDK, and chosen backend.

How Android logging and Logcat fit together

Logcat is Android’s tool for viewing app and system messages. Android documents system-maintained circular log buffers, including main, system, and crash; language-level facilities such as android.util.Log ultimately write into that system. Filtering can occur at multiple stages, including compile-time, system-property, application, and display filtering, and build tooling can remove some calls. A logging wrapper adds API or routing behavior; it does not replace this platform baseline.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

For Android-specific usage and filtering details, see Android Developers’ Logcat documentation. It describes Logcat as a command-line tool that dumps system messages, including messages written by an app using the Log class.

Initialize Timber early in application startup

Timber has no default Tree, so logging behavior depends on the Trees the app installs. Plant the intended Tree instances early—commonly from Application.onCreate()—so logging calls have a configured destination before app components need them. Select Trees deliberately for the behavior wanted in each build rather than assuming Timber automatically enables output.

Use kotlin-logging with an explicit backend

Kotlin-logging provides a Kotlin-oriented facade over SLF4J. Add a compatible runtime implementation and configure its output and levels; adding only the facade may not produce the logging behavior the app expects. Confirm the version-specific artifact and setup in the project documentation and Maven Central’s Android artifact listing.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show

The project descriptions distinguish these libraries by architecture and features, not by controlled Android performance measurements. There is no supported basis here to call one universally fastest, or to rank them by popularity.
