Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For an Android-only app, android.util.Log is the simplest platform-native choice when tags and severity levels are enough. Choose Timber when you need a configurable layer of logging Trees, or Kotlin-Logging when Kotlin-friendly calls fit a project that already uses a JVM logging backend. Use println for quick experiments or deliberate standard-output logging, not as a like-for-like replacement for Android’s logging controls.
How the four approaches differ
| Approach | What it provides | Setup and controls | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
println |
A minimal standard-output call. | Very little call-site setup, but it does not provide Android Log’s priority-and-tag interface or documented Android-specific controls. Exact device and Logcat behavior depends on the runtime and tooling. | Quick experiments or an intentional standard-output workflow. |
android.util.Log |
Android’s platform app-logging API, with severity methods and tags identifying the source. | No third-party logging library is required. Android documents tag filtering, runtime properties, and examples for removing selected calls with R8; an app must define its own build and release policy. | Android-only apps that need platform-native priorities and tags without an extra abstraction. |
| Timber | A small API layered over Android Log, with behavior supplied by Tree instances. | Requires a Timber dependency and explicit Tree installation. Trees can provide extension or routing points; its DebugTree infers a class-based tag. | Apps that benefit from centralizing logging behavior or routing through different Trees. |
| Kotlin-Logging | A Kotlin-oriented facade with logger acquisition and Kotlin-friendly calls; on JVM it wraps SLF4J. | For JVM projects, a facade backend dependency and runtime logging implementation are required. Level configuration belongs to the underlying framework. Check the backend’s Android compatibility for the app. | Kotlin projects where an existing JVM logging framework and backend make the facade useful. |
These options differ mainly in architecture and control, not in a demonstrated speed ranking. No performance testing is established here.
Should you use println or Android Log?
Use Log when an Android app needs logs that carry explicit priorities and tags. The Android API includes methods for levels such as debug, info, warn, and error; tags identify the source, commonly a class or activity. See the Android Log API reference.
println has a smaller call surface, which can be handy during a quick experiment. But it does not give callers the same Android-specific tag and priority interface, nor the documented filtering controls. Do not assume it behaves exactly like Android Log in every device, runtime, or Logcat setup.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
What Android Log gives you—and what it does not
Android lists android.util.Log as the app-logging baseline. The platform documentation describes tag-based filtering and runtime properties, including Log.isLoggable and log.tag.* properties. It also provides example R8 rules for removing selected calls. These are capabilities and examples, not a guarantee that every project automatically strips the same calls. Review the AOSP logging guidance and establish a policy for each build type.
Direct calls are easy to understand, but choices about tags, filtering, and release output can become repetitive when scattered throughout a codebase. A team can still use the platform API effectively by standardizing those decisions and reviewing them before release.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
What Timber adds to Android Log
Timber provides a small API over Android’s normal Log class. Its extension point is the Tree: the app plants the Tree implementations it wants, and those Trees define logging behavior or routing. The Timber README says no Trees are installed by default, so logging behavior must be configured deliberately.
Installation and tag behavior
Plant the desired Trees early, commonly in the application’s onCreate. Timber’s DebugTree infers a class-based tag, which can avoid manually repeating a tag at every call site. Timber also documents embedded lint checks for common mistakes, including argument mismatches, excessive tag length, direct Log calls, formatting, concatenation, and exception logging.

When the extra layer is worthwhile
Choose Timber when its Tree-based configuration or lint support solves a real team need—for example, managing destinations or separating debug and production logging behavior. If the app only needs straightforward tagged platform logs, Timber adds a dependency and initialization step without being necessary. Its README displays dependency coordinates, but release details can change; confirm the current project documentation before copying a version into a build file.
Can you use Kotlin-Logging in an Android app?
Kotlin-Logging is designed to make logger acquisition and call syntax more idiomatic in Kotlin. Its project documentation describes a facade that wraps SLF4J on JVM and supplies Kotlin-friendly extensions. That makes it usable in a JVM-based Android project only when the application’s logging backend and runtime implementation are also appropriate and configured. Consult the Kotlin-Logging wiki; its version examples may not reflect current releases.

Do you need an SLF4J backend?
For JVM use, yes: the facade alone is not a complete runtime logging setup. The project documentation calls for a backend dependency and a logging implementation at runtime. Which implementation is suitable for a particular Android app depends on its architecture and compatibility requirements; verify that combination rather than assuming any JVM backend works on Android.
Lazy messages and context
Kotlin-Logging examples use calls such as KotlinLogging.logger {} and lambda messages such as logger.debug { ... }. The project says a debug-message lambda is evaluated only when debug logging is enabled at runtime. It also documents MDC support and notes that carrying thread or coroutine context requires suitable coroutine integration. On JVM and Android, level configuration is delegated to the underlying framework.

Set a release and privacy policy whichever API you choose
Logging behavior in production is a build and privacy decision, not an automatic property of choosing a particular API. AOSP guidance describes ERROR, WARN, and INFO as kept, DEBUG as compiled but stripped at runtime, and VERBOSE as excluded from an app except during development in the guidance described. These are documented recommendations and examples; do not assume they match every app’s configuration. Define and review the policy for your own build types.
AOSP’s security and privacy guidance is explicit: “Do not log Personally Identifiable Information (PII).” It names email addresses, telephone numbers, and names as examples, and calls for policy and privacy review before release. This applies regardless of whether logs are emitted with Log, Timber, or a facade.
A practical choice by project type
- Small Android-only app: Start with
Logif priorities and tags meet your needs. - App needing configurable Trees: Consider Timber if central routing or distinct debug and production behavior will justify its dependency and early initialization.
- Kotlin project with an established JVM backend: Consider Kotlin-Logging for its Kotlin-oriented API, after verifying the backend and runtime implementation for Android.
- Temporary diagnostic or explicit stdout use: Use
printlnknowingly, without expecting Android Log’s tag, priority, or filtering interface.
A 2019 F-Droid study reported that 68.9% (7,025 of 10,193) of observed logging-library modifications changed from Android’s default logging library or Java standard output, such as System.out.println, to a third-party library. That figure describes modifications in that study’s corpus and method; it is not the share of apps using third-party logging today or evidence that one of these libraries is better. See the 2019 study paper.
