If VHS video appears in your capture but the recording has no sound, trace the VCR’s red and white audio outputs to the input your software is actually recording. Then check that input and the capture source’s audio routing. If audio is present but out of sync, compare the beginning, middle, and end of a short test: a steady offset and sync that drifts over time have different causes and fixes.

First, trace the VCR’s audio path

Composite video and stereo audio travel through separate connections. A picture on screen confirms the video path, not the audio path. Check that the VCR is playing and that its left and right audio outputs—the red and white RCA plugs—reach an audio input connected to the computer or capture device. VirtualDub’s capture documentation describes older cards that do not capture sound onboard and instead route audio through the computer’s sound card: VirtualDub capture documentation.

Some setups therefore need an audio pass-through connection from the capture card to the computer’s sound-card input. VirtualDub’s hardware setup documentation describes connecting RCA audio to a stereo 3.5 mm input: VirtualDub capture hardware setup. This arrangement only works if the computer has a compatible line-level input; it does not solve a muted input or incorrect software routing.

Check that the intended input is enabled and selected

In your operating system or capture application, find the input receiving the VCR audio. It may be labelled Line In, Aux, or with the capture device’s name. Make sure it is enabled, not muted, and has an appropriate input level. VirtualDub notes that another application or a driver can change the selected input or its level, so check the setting in the software you are using to record rather than assuming a previous configuration still applies.

Check OBS audio routing separately from monitoring

In OBS, open the Video Capture Device source’s properties and inspect Audio Output Mode. OBS offers capture-only audio, desktop-audio output, and the option to use a custom audio device. With capture-only audio, you will not hear the source unless Audio Monitoring is enabled; not hearing it does not by itself establish that the recording lacks audio. See the OBS Video Capture Sources documentation for the available modes and buffering setting.

Watch the OBS mixer while the VCR plays. If the operating system shows an audio signal but the relevant OBS mixer meter does not move, check the selected device and source routing, then verify that the source is not muted. If the USB dongle has no entry or activity in the mixer, try adding an Audio Input Capture source and selecting that dongle. A Windows input that is disabled or muted can also prevent signal from reaching OBS. This is a device-specific troubleshooting path, not a universal requirement for every adapter; an example appears in the OBS forum thread about a VHS recording sound problem.

Follow device-specific guidance when applicable

For Elgato Video Capture on Windows 10 or 11, Elgato’s OBS setup guide recommends Capture audio only and enabling OBS Audio Monitoring if you want to listen while capturing. It recommends Stereo and says the device natively operates at 48 kHz; the guide warns that setting it to 44.1 kHz may cause stutter, drift, or other anomalies. These recommendations apply to that Elgato device and setup, not automatically to other capture brands. Consult the Elgato Video Capture OBS guide for Windows 10/11 for its full instructions.

If that Elgato device’s OBS meter stops moving, its guide suggests deactivating and reactivating the source or reconnecting USB. It also gives a device-specific Device Manager step after a Windows restart. Do not apply that procedure to unrelated adapters; use their own documentation instead.

Tell a fixed audio offset from sync drift

Make a short test capture and compare audio and video near the beginning, middle, and end. A mismatch that stays roughly the same is a fixed offset: a sync adjustment may bring the tracks together. If the mismatch grows or changes during the capture, a single fixed delay cannot reliably correct it.

Changing sync can reflect separate audio and video clocks, capture timing, dropped frames, or interruptions and variable timing in the VHS signal. VirtualDub discusses these timing issues in its capture documentation. A forum reply also describes why a delay may help a constant offset but not variable drift: OBS forum discussion of a VCR recording audio issue.

Reduce instability before changing equipment

  • Check and reseat the audio and video connections, then make another short capture.
  • Close other capture or audio applications during the test to reduce possible device conflicts.
  • Watch for audio-meter dropouts and dropped or irregular video frames. These point toward instability rather than a simple constant offset.
  • Use the capture software’s buffering option as a targeted test if playback stutters or the device appears delayed. OBS documents buffering behavior for video capture sources; the right setting depends on the problem and device.

VirtualDub lists bus bottlenecks, source or signal interruptions, and timing correction among possible causes of sync problems. It also cautions that forcing video to match an audio stream by changing frame rate can make later editing harder. Avoid treating a frame-rate change as a general-purpose fix.

Choose a cable, adapter, or service only for the problem you have

Option When it fits What to verify
RCA-to-3.5 mm stereo cable to a computer input Your existing capture card handles video but routes audio separately. The computer has a compatible line-level input, and the recording software selects it. This does not fix software routing or changing sync drift.
Integrated USB audio/video capture adapter You need a device that accepts composite video and both RCA audio leads. Its manual, operating-system support, and separate video and audio device selections in your software.
Replacement adapter The existing device’s audio path is faulty or unsupported. Compatibility with your operating system and recording software. A replacement is not a guaranteed fix for every audio or sync problem.
Professional digitization service You lack a compatible computer input or persistent hardware problems make capture impractical. Provider availability, handling, and cost in your area; these vary and should be confirmed directly.

Before buying anything, determine whether sound reaches the computer, whether OBS receives it, and whether the sync mismatch stays constant. A cable helps only when the missing link is a separate audio input; replacing hardware is most relevant when that hardware path is actually at fault.
