If one React render failure appears twice in your monitoring dashboard, check whether both the boundary and a browser-level handler submit it. React documents that a boundary-caught error bubbles to window in development, where window.onerror or an error listener can capture it too; that bubbling does not happen the same way in production. Choose one reporting path for caught render errors, or use a verified, vendor-specific mechanism to prevent the second path from resubmitting them.

Why one caught error can create two reports

A class error boundary can render a fallback UI and report a descendant error through componentDidCatch(error, info). If that callback sends the error to your monitoring service while a global browser handler also sends errors, development may produce two events for the same failure. React documents this development bubbling behavior in its Component reference: errors caught by a boundary bubble to window, where window.onerror or window.addEventListener('error', callback) can intercept them. In production, caught errors do not bubble to the global handler in that way.

This difference means a duplicate seen only in development does not, by itself, show that production users receive duplicate events. It does mean your development and production reporting paths need to be evaluated separately.

Find every path that can submit an event

Before adding deduplication logic, trace the paths that can report the same failure. A boundary may not be the only layer sending events: SDK integrations, browser listeners, root-level callbacks, framework hooks, or wrapper libraries can also participate.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Boundary: Does componentDidCatch call the monitoring SDK or a shared reporting function?
  • Browser globals: Are window.onerror or window.addEventListener('error', ...) handlers registered by your app or SDK?
  • SDK and root instrumentation: Does the installed SDK or React integration capture the error automatically, or does it provide a root-level reporting callback?
  • Framework and wrappers: Do route boundaries, framework hooks, or a wrapper library report the same event?
  • Event flow: For each handler, determine whether it submits an event, forwards it to another handler, or filters it.

Check the installed SDK version’s documentation and configuration rather than assuming that a callback name or default behavior is the same across releases. Sentry’s React guidance discusses boundary reporting and centralized processing; its older error-boundary guidance explains why caught errors may need an explicit reporting path when they do not reach the production global uncaught handler.

Choose one authoritative reporting path

For boundary-caught render errors, the simplest policy is usually to assign reporting ownership to one layer. The right layer depends on whether you value React-specific component context at the boundary or centralized control across the application.

Approach What it gives you What to verify
Boundary-owned capture componentDidCatch receives the error and React component-stack information for the caught descendant failure. Ensure another active handler does not submit the same development error. This path does not automatically cover errors outside boundary scope.
Centralized or global capture Reporting policy can live in an SDK or shared instrumentation layer, which can be convenient for cross-cutting observability. Account for development bubbling and ensure errors already handled by a boundary are not resubmitted. Confirm the actual SDK integration’s behavior and version-specific controls.

React recommends keeping static getDerivedStateFromError pure and using componentDidCatch for side effects such as reporting. A boundary-owned pattern therefore separates fallback-state selection from telemetry:

class ErrorBoundary extends React.Component {
  state = { hasError: false };

  static getDerivedStateFromError(error) {
    return { hasError: true };
  }

  componentDidCatch(error, info) {
    reportError(error, { componentStack: info.componentStack });
  }

  render() {
    if (this.state.hasError) {
      return this.props.fallback;
    }

    return this.props.children;
  }
}

Here, reportError is an application-level placeholder, not a specific vendor API. If you choose this path, audit SDK automatic capture and global handlers so they do not also send the same caught failure. If centralized capture owns reporting instead, do not also submit it from the boundary unless your SDK’s documented processing or filtering behavior deliberately handles the overlap.

Preserve useful context and handle non-Error throws

The boundary’s info.componentStack identifies the React component ancestry involved in the failure. Include it with the event when the selected reporting path supports that context. Production builds may minify component names, so configure source maps and confirm that the monitoring service can use them if readable reports are important.

JavaScript can throw values other than Error objects. Reporting code should therefore tolerate an unknown thrown value rather than assuming that every input has a useful .stack property. Normalize values safely in your own reporting layer, while retaining the original value or other available context where your SDK permits it.

Handle React Router route errors as a separate path

React Router’s error-boundary guide describes route modules rendering the closest route ErrorBoundary and explicitly says those boundaries are not intended for error reporting. Treat route fallback rendering and telemetry as separate concerns: identify the route loader, action, or component error path, then inspect any app-level reporting hook or SDK integration for overlap. Do not assume a route boundary’s fallback behavior is equivalent to a generic class boundary’s componentDidCatch reporting path.

  1. List the boundary, global handlers, SDK integrations, root callbacks, and framework hooks that can receive or submit the test error.
  2. Trigger one render error below the boundary in development. Confirm that the fallback renders, then inspect whether one or more reporting paths submit the event.
  3. Repeat against a production build. Check whether the selected owner submits the caught error and whether a global handler also submits it.
  4. After changing ownership or filtering, repeat both tests and confirm that one intended report is produced for the caught failure in each environment.

If you use SDK filtering or event identity to suppress overlap, follow the documentation for the vendor and version actually installed. React does not define a universal fingerprint or deduplication interval. Deduplicating by message text alone can suppress separate failures with identical messages, while the same failure may carry different context in different reports.

Know which failures error boundaries do not catch

A boundary is not a universal exception handler. React documents that error boundaries do not catch errors from event handlers, server-side rendering, the boundary itself, or ordinary asynchronous callbacks such as a setTimeout callback. The documented exception is an error thrown inside a startTransition function returned by useTransition. Give those other error sources an appropriate reporting path rather than expecting a render boundary to capture them.
